Download or read book Sepsis written by Nancy Khardori and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses multiple aspects of sepsis syndrome seen in all age groups of patients and by all specialties in medicine. The syndrome is the aftermath of the dissemination of an infectious process into and through the blood stream. This allows the bacteria, bacterial products and cytokines to reach multiple organs, resulting in their dysfunction. In spite of the advances in supportive care and antibiotic therapy, the outcome of sepsis has not changed significantly. The inadequacies in the current diagnostic modalities and conflicting inconclusive results of investigations on novel treatments have contributed significantly to the lack of progress in the management of sepsis. Antibiotic overuse in and outside the intensive care unit driven by the lack of microbiological data and definitive diagnosis lends to the creation and transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria, which has added to the challenges and poor outcomes of sepsis syndrome. The nine chapters in this book are authored by experts in various aspects of sepsis from North America, South America, Europe and Asia. State of the art information is provided in the areas of pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis and management of sepsis. Each chapter has a contribution on the role of various evidence-based preventive strategies to reduce the incidence and subsequent poor outcomes of sepsis syndrome.

Download or read book Vitamin D in Chronic Kidney Disease written by Pablo A. Ureña Torres and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vitamin D deficiency, circulating levels lower than 15 ng/ml, is an epidemic disease worldwide with more than a billion people suffering of it in the beginning of the 21-century. Besides its impact on mineral and bone metabolism, these low vitamin D levels are also associated with a diversity of non-skeletal complications, among them cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, cancer, tuberculosis, and immune system dysfunction. Chronic Kidney Disease is also a very common disease, affecting more than 10% of the world population, ranging from stage 1 to stage 5 before dialysis. Approximately 1% of the population in industrialized countries is affected by end-stage renal disease (ESRD), needing a renal replacement therapy either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, and ultimately by renal transplantation. Those CKD patients are more susceptible to exhibit reduced vitamin D stocks. Consequently, more than eighty percent of CKD patients have either insufficient or deficient vitamin D levels for multiple reasons.
