Book Synopsis Political Opportunities for Climate Policy by : Roger Karapin
Download or read book Political Opportunities for Climate Policy written by Roger Karapin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of climate change policies focuses mainly on the prospects for international agreements or how climate policies should be designed. Yet effective domestic climate policies are essential to any global solution, and we know too little about how and why such policies are adopted. Political Opportunities for Climate Policy examines in depth the causes of effective climate policies in the United States, using a statistical analysis of all fifty states and long-term case studies of California, New York, and the federal government. Roger Karapin analyzes twenty-two episodes in which policies were adopted, blocked, or reversed. He shows that actors and events have positively affected climate policy making, despite the constraints presented by political institutions and powerful fossil fuel industries. Climate policy advocates have succeeded when they mobilized vigorously and astutely during windows of opportunity - which opened when events converged to raise both problem awareness and the political commitment to address them.

This book was released on 2003-06-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voluntary approaches include environmental agreements negotiated with industry and public programs which firms can volunteer to participate in. They are increasingly supplementing or replacing other environmental policy instruments, such as regulations, taxes and tradable permits. However, their environmental effectiveness and economic efficiency are often challenged. Questions often asked include: Do voluntary approaches deliver the expected environmental benefits? Do they help reach environmental targets in a cost-effective way? This report assesses the use of voluntary approaches by building on a number of new case studies and an extensive search of the available literature. The focus of the analysis is on the environmental effectiveness, economic efficiency, and administrative costs of voluntary approaches, either used in isolation or as part of "policy mixes". This report concludes that the environmental effectiveness of voluntary approaches is often questionable, and their economic efficiency is generally low. While administrative and transaction costs vary greatly among voluntary approaches, it is clear that if too few resources are spent in their preparation, negotiation and enforcement, their environmental impacts are likely to be modest. Combining a voluntary approach with a tax or a tradable permit system can trigger quite significant additional administrative costs, and the environmental integrity of the other instrument can be weakened.
Book Synopsis Looking behind the Label by : Tim Bartley
Download or read book Looking behind the Label written by Tim Bartley and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean when consumers "shop with a conscience" and choose products labeled as fair or sustainable? Does this translate into meaningful changes in global production processes? To what extent are voluntary standards implemented and enforced, and can they really govern global industries? Looking behind the Label presents an informative introduction to global production and ethical consumption, tracing the links between consumers' choices and the practices of multinational producers and retailers. Case studies of several types of products—wood and paper, food, apparel and footwear, and electronics—are used to reveal what lies behind voluntary rules and to critique predominant assumptions about ethical consumption as a form of political expression.
