Book Synopsis Promoting Sustainable Electricity in Europe by : W. M. Lafferty
Download or read book Promoting Sustainable Electricity in Europe written by W. M. Lafferty and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . this book is a timely and significant read for anyone with an interest in the operation of the energy sector. Karen Morrow, International Energy Law & Taxation Review This is a timely and comparative assessment of initiatives to promote renewable electricity sources (RES-E) in eight European countries. Carried out by the ProSus research programme at the University of Oslo in cooperation with leading research institutions in each country, the book focuses on the promotional schemes used to foster RES-E in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden. The book is unique in that it monitors progress on implementing the EU RES-E Directive in relation to the impact of the dominant energy systems in each country. Employing notions of path dependency/path creation , the analysis demonstrates that crucial lessons for promoting RES-E are to be found in the contextual conditions of national and regional settings; conditions that qualify the effects of more general, market-oriented schemes. The conclusions reached are of direct relevance for the ongoing debate as to the most effective policy instruments for achieving sustainable energy and climate policies in Europe. Promoting Sustainable Electricity in Europe will be of interest to academics and researchers involved in environmental management, energy studies, technology and sustainable development. Furthermore, it will be of interest to policymakers and bureaucrats both at the EU level and among EU/EEA member states concerned with climate change, renewable energy and sustainable development at large. The book should also be of relevance for business organizations and NGOs concerned with the promotion of sustainable electricity.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Thermogeology by : David Banks
Download or read book An Introduction to Thermogeology written by David Banks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of the heat stored in the shallow subsurface for space heating (ground source heat) is widely used in North America and many European nations, such as Sweden, and is regarded as the most important and reliable 'green' space heating technology. In many nations, including Britain, the technology remains poorly understood and under used. This situation is about to change, however, with the UK market for ground source heat pumps growing at over 100% per annum. This book offers practical guidance and will equip engineers, planners and geologists with the fundamental skills to assess and implement this new technology and to introduce them to the science behind thermogeology.

Download or read book Before the Wells Run Dry written by R. J. Douthwaite and published by Green Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The world is using oil at four times the rate it is finding it and the output of many existing fields, including the North Sea, is beginning to decline. According to one contributor to this book, global oil production will start falling within the next five to ten years and increases in natural gas output will cease to be capable of making up the shortfall after about 2015." "This groundbreaking book explores these and many other issues and its authors conclude that renewables do indeed have the capacity to provide the people of Europe with all the energy they need to live comfortable lives without using coal or nuclear energy at all. Moreover, the switch could be made within fifty years if the right decisions are taken immediately."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Translocal Ruralism by : Charlotta Hedberg
Download or read book Translocal Ruralism written by Charlotta Hedberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural areas are often viewed as isolated and stagnating areas and urban areas as their opposites. Against such a backdrop, this book seeks to unveil a set of dynamics that view rural areas as ‘translocal’ in the sense that they are ‘changing’ and ‘interconnected’. Social transformations take place in rural areas as the result of intense exchanges between different people, settings and geographies. Accordingly, rural-urban but also rural-rural interrelations on international and national scales are strongly contributing to rural change. Translocal ruralism is exemplified through the analysis of local and global migratory flows, the activities of rural firms in national and global arenas, the spread of different forms of transportation and dislocation, and the growing information society, which enables rural spaces to be connected to the world and improves new ways of interconnection and sociability practices. The book is structured into two parts, which intertwine the dynamics of rural spaces. The first part, ‘Linking nodes: people and networks connecting places’, is concerned with mobilities such as migration and commuting, and the establishment of national and global networks. The second part, ‘International mobilities: a tension between scales’, analyses the dynamics of international migration and mobilities in rural areas.

This set of book of abstracts and full paper searchable CD-ROM presents selected papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Structures and Architecture Conference (ICSA2016), organized by the School of Architecture of the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal (July 2016), to promote the synergy in the collaboration between the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering.
