Book excerpt: Data centers are computing infrastructure facilities that house arrays of electronic racks containing high power dissipation data processing and storage equipment whose temperature must be maintained within allowable limits. In this research, the sustainable and reliable operations of the electronic equipment in data centers are shown to be possible through the Open Engineering Systems paradigm. A design approach is developed to bring adaptability and robustness, two main features of open systems, in multi-scale convective systems such as data centers. The presented approach is centered on the integration of three constructs: a) Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) based multi-scale modeling, b) compromise Decision Support Problem (cDSP), and c) robust design to overcome the challenges in thermal-fluid modeling, having multiple objectives, and inherent variability management, respectively. Two new POD based reduced order thermal modeling methods are presented to simulate multi-parameter dependent temperature field in multi-scale thermal/fluid systems such as data centers. The methods are verified to achieve an adaptable, robust, and energy efficient thermal design of an air-cooled data center cell with an annual increase in the power consumption for the next ten years. Also, a simpler reduced order modeling approach centered on POD technique with modal coefficient interpolation is validated against experimental measurements in an operational data center facility.

Book excerpt: A simplified computational fluid dynamics/heat transfer (CFD/HT) model for a unit cell of a data center with a hot aisle-cold aisle (HACA) layout is simulated. Inefficiencies dealing with the mixing of hot air present in the room, with the cold inlet air leading to a loss of cooling potential are identified. For existing facilities, an algorithm called the Ambient Intelligence based Load Management (AILM) is developed which enhances the net data center heat dissipation capacity for given energy consumption at the facilities end. It gives a scheme to determine how much and where the computer loads should be allocated, based on the differential loss in cooling potential per unit increase in server workload. While the gains predicted are validated numerically initially, experimental validation is conducted using server simulators. For new facilities, a novel layout of the data center is designed, which uses scalable pods (S-Pod) based cabinet arrangement and air delivery. For the same floor space, the S-Pod and HACA facilities are simulated for different velocities, and the results are compared. An approach to incorporate heterogeneity in data centers, both for lower heat dissipation and liquid cooled racks has been established. Various performance metrics for data centers have been analyzed and sorted on the basis of their applicability. Finally, a roadmap for the transformation of the existing facilities to a state of higher cognizance of Facilities/IT performance is laid out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data centers consume roughly 1% of the total electricity demand, while ICT as a whole consumes around 10%. Demand is growing exponentially and, left unchecked, will grow to an estimated increase of 20% or more by 2030. This book covers the energy consumption and minimization of the different data center components when running real workloads, taking into account the types of instructions executed by the servers. It presents the different air- and liquid-cooled technologies for servers and data centers with some real examples, including waste heat reuse through adsorption chillers, as well as the hardware and software used to measure, model and control energy. It computes and compares the Power Usage Effectiveness and the Total Cost of Ownership of new and existing data centers with different cooling designs, including free cooling and waste heat reuse leading to the Energy Reuse Effectiveness. The book concludes by demonstrating how a well-designed data center reusing waste heat to produce chilled water can reduce energy consumption by roughly 50%, and how renewable energy can be used to create net-zero energy data centers.

Firstly, cooling air delivery through perforated tiles will be examined and influence of the tile geometry on flow field development and hot air entrainment above perforated tiles will be discussed. Secondly, the use of cold aisle containment to physically separate hot and cold regions, and minimize hot and cold air mixing will be presented. Both experimental investigations and computational efforts are discussed and development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based models for simulating air flow in data centers is included. In addition, metrology tools for facility scale air velocity and temperature measurement, and air flow rate measurement through perforated floor tiles and server racks are examined and the authors present thermodynamics-based models to gauge the effectiveness and importance of air flow management schemes in data centers.

Discussed at length is the cooling of communication installation rooms such as data centers or base stations, and this is intended as a valuable tool for the people designing and manufacturing key parts of communication networks. This book provides an introduction to current cooling methods used for energy reduction, and also compares present cooling methods in use in the field. The qualification methods and standard reliability assessments are reviewed, and their inability to assess the risks of free air cooling is discussed. The method of identifying the risks associated with free air cooling on equipment performance and reliability is introduced. A novel method of assessment for free air cooling is also proposed that utilizes prognostics and health management (PHM). This book also: Describes how the implementation of free air cooling can save energy for cooling within the telecommunications infrastructure. Analyzes the potential risks and failures of mechanisms possible in the implementation of free air cooling, which benefits manufacturers and equipment designers. Presents prognostics-based assessments to identify and mitigate the risks of telecommunications equipment under free air cooling conditions, which can provide the early warning of equipment failures at operation stage without disturbing the data centers' service. Optimum Cooling for Data Centers is an ideal book for researchers and engineers interested in designing and manufacturing equipment for use in telecom infrastructures.

Book excerpt: In a previous volume (ICT-Energy-Concepts Towards Zero-Power ICT; referenced below as Vol. 1), we addressed some of the fundamentals related to bridging the gap between the amount of energy required to operate portable/mobile ICT systems and the amount of energy available from ambient sources. The only viable solution appears to be to attack the gap from both sides, i.e. to reduce the amount of energy dissipated during computation and to improve the efficiency in energy-harvesting technologies. In this book, we build on those concepts and continue the discussion on energy efficiency and sustainability by addressing the minimisation of energy consumption at different levels across the ICT system stack, from hardware to software, as well as discussing energy consumption issues in high-performance computing (HPC), data centres and communication in sensor networks. This book was realised thanks to the contribution of the project ‘Coordinating Research Efforts of the ICT-Energy Community’ funded from the European Union under the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) area of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (grant agreement n. 611004).

Book excerpt: A considerable amount of operational costs in the data center are spent on energy, as the puddle of computer resources required is increasing exponentially. The reliability and scalability of the data center are dependent on its energy management and resource distribution. Energy-efficient workload management has been widely adopted by data centers for cloud computing. Thermal and energy modeling plays an important role in making decisions on workload management. Machine learning technology has become increasingly popular used in thermal modeling. In this paper, we studied existing machine learning algorithms and methods for thermal prediction for data centers and conducted experiments to investigate the impact of activities on temperature and energy consumption with CPU-intensive workloads. We collected the CPU utilization, temperature, and energy data and applied several regression models and machine learning models to predict the temperature of the CPU. The performance of the regression models was compared with the machine learning models. We studied the electric energy cost of different workload scheduling algorithms and applied the thermal and energy models to investigate the cooling energy cost of data centers by using these workload scheduling algorithms on the Green Cloud simulator.

Book excerpt: The performance of microprocessor and its associated components has significantly increased but unfortunately, heat dissipation from these components is a growing problem. ASHRAE and Uptime Institute have predicted the increasing heat trends and proposed guidelines based on equipment manufacturer's requirements and customer challenges. The major challenge for the customers among others is to maintain servers at an acceptable temperature to achieve desired reliability and functionality. Efficient cooling is mandatory in order to decrease maintenance cost and power usage. Air flow distribution in a raised floor data center is complex and need to be studied for implementing innovative cooling designs that can sustain lower rack inlet temperatures with the use of less amount of cold air supply by utilizing proper management of hot and cold air. This book introduces cold aisle isolation designs to contain the cold air in cold aisle and prevents hot air infiltration. Additional transient analysis are studied as data centers are highly time dependent with fluctuations in server power and cold air supply.
