Book excerpt: As a result of the sharp increase in the price of energy during the 1970s and the associated changes in the relative costs of alternative energy resources, all countries need to conserve energy and to replace expensive sources of energy with cheaper ones. The subjects of energy conservation and fuel substitution have therefore assumed increasing importance worldwide. The cement industry is one of the relatively energy-intensive industries with energy-related costs accounting for a major portion of the costs of manufacturing cement. The recent experience of the industrialized countries has shown that energy costs per unit of output of cement could be significantly reduced through a variety of measures ranging from better housekeeping, energy management, and improved monitoring and control systems to more capital-intensive investments in modifications to existing plant and equipment and conversion to more energy-efficient processes. This report aims at a broad presentation of concepts, measures and issues relevant to achieving such improvements in energy efficiency in the cement industry based on experience in both industrialized and developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the current focus on sustainability, it is necessary to evaluate cement’s environmental impact properly, especially when developing new ‘green’ concrete types. Therefore, this chapter investigates the available literature on every process concerned during the production of cement. Inventory data on energy use, CO2, PM10, SOx and NOx emissions are collected. Alternatives and improvement are briefly described regarding energy performance and mineralogy changes that it induces for clinker.

Book Synopsis Industrial Energy Rationalization in Developing Countries by : Julio R. Gamba
Download or read book Industrial Energy Rationalization in Developing Countries written by Julio R. Gamba and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the potential for improving energy efficiency in industry, and reviews alternative approaches to energy rationalization programs in developing countries. To provide the framework for discussing the potential for and approaches to industrial energy rationalization, the book begins with a review of energy consumption patterns as well as the processes and fuels used in industry. It discusses typical measures for improving energy efficiency through conservation and fuel diversification. The energy-saving potential and the economics of energy utilization in the industrial sector are also reviewed. The experience of selected developed and developing countries with industrial energy rationalization programs suggests that there is a need for a balanced approach to such programs. As the book explains, the design, start up, and implementation and monitoring of these programs include a number of highly technical activities that require special government efforts. It provides details of some of the key elements of such programs. Finally, the role that financial and development institutions can play in the initiation and support of industrial energy rationalization programs is discussed.
Book Synopsis The Feasibility of Joint Implementation by : C.J. Jepma
Download or read book The Feasibility of Joint Implementation written by C.J. Jepma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CATRINUS J. JEPMA This volume contains the various contributions that were made during the International Conference on Joint Implementation, held near Groningen, The Netherlands, 1-3 June 1994. The conference was initiated by The Netherlands' Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment -along with the Ministries of Foreign (Development Cooper ation) and Economic Affairs -and carried out under the responsibility of Foundation IDE (Groningen, The Netherlands). Its underlying idea was to bring together an international group of specialists on Joint Implementation (11) - from governments, NGOs, business and science -to discuss its feasibility of 11. The conference was timed between the 9th and 10th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) for a Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) - which was by then considered as the most crucial phase preparing for the first Conference of Parties (CoP I; Berlin, 28 March - 7 April 1995) - in order to provide additional information or results that might serve as an input in the international negotiating process. The main purpose of the conference was, however, to sit back and have a reflection about what has now become known as 11, and evaluate from the perspective of academics, and practitioners, jointly with officials what promise the option really holds, and to evaluate under what socio-economic and political circumstances and conditions one could successfully proceed in setting out the framework for its further testing and l application.
Book Synopsis Energy Efficiency in Developing Countries by : Suzana Tavares da Silva
Download or read book Energy Efficiency in Developing Countries written by Suzana Tavares da Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comparative analysis of energy efficiency policies in developing countries. Although there is a vast amount of literature available about renewable energy policy and implementation in the developing world, energy efficiency tends to lack attention. This book fills this lacuna by examining the current state of the field and scope for future improvements. Drawing on a wide range of case studies including Brazil, China and Chile, the authors use a comparative approach to examine the policies and programmes being implemented, looking at the existing legal frameworks and regulatory challenges. By showcasing stories of success, as well as barriers to energy efficiency, they highlight the opportunities for increased energy access and efficiency and demonstrate how these opportunities may directly impact on climate change mitigation. This volume will be a useful resource for scholars and practitioners with an interest in energy policy and efficiency, climate change and international development.
Book Synopsis Financing Energy Efficiency by : Robert P. Taylor
Download or read book Financing Energy Efficiency written by Robert P. Taylor and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-02-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While energy efficiency projects could partly meet new energy demand more cheaply than new supplies, weak economic institutions in developing and transitional economies impede developing and financing energy efficiency retrofits. This book analyzes these difficulties, suggests a 3-part model for projectizing and financing energy efficiency retrofits, and presents thirteen case studies to illustrate the issues and principles involved.
Book Synopsis The Potential for Energy Efficiency in the Fertilizer Industry by : Roger Heath
Download or read book The Potential for Energy Efficiency in the Fertilizer Industry written by Roger Heath and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the potential for energy conservation in the fertilizer industry, describes the organizational aspects of implementing successful energy conservation programs, and gives details of particular conservation measures that may be considered. Since the production of ammonia is the most energy-intensive process for all fertilizer, a major emphasis of the report is on the potential savings in ammonia production, which can amount to as much as 30%, or up to US$ 45/mt of ammonia. About half of the savings can be achieved by good housekeeping measures, with little or no investment cost; the other half involves a mix of short- and medium-term payback investments.
