Book excerpt: When Arlene Sollis was born with cerebral palsy in 1935, the doctor advised her parents against taking her home. He said she would never function on her own?that she would be mentally handicapped and unlikely to survive beyond the age of ten. Her quality of life, the doctor said, would be minimal at best, and so he recommended that she be sent to an institution, where she would be taken care of. Her mother refused, instead taking Arlene home with her. And all of the doctor's predictions turned out to be false. Arlene turned out to be a bright child with a true zest for life. Although she has certainly faced struggles and difficulties in her life, she grew to adulthood and eventually became a special education teacher. She dedicated her life to promoting the rights of all disabled people, receiving many awards and citations for her work. This memoir tells the true and inspiring story of Arlene's life, following her from birth until the present and recalling her childhood, teaching career, progression of her condition, and retirement.

Book Synopsis Assault on Mexican American Collective Memory, 2010–2015 by : Rodolfo F. Acuña
Download or read book Assault on Mexican American Collective Memory, 2010–2015 written by Rodolfo F. Acuña and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a micro-narrative structure to explore the assault on the collective memory of Mexican Americans in the Southwest United States from 2010–2016. These communities’ survival depends on their histories and identities, which are being quickly erased by gentrification and dispersal, neoliberalism and privatization. This issue is most apparent in the education system, where Mexican American students receive inferior educations and lack access to higher education. Avoiding the overly-theoretical macro-narrative, this book uses case studies and micro-narratives to suggest possible changes and actions to address this issue. It also explores how the erasure of Mexican Americans’ history and identity mirrors society as a whole.

Book Synopsis U.S. Latino Issues by : Rodolfo F. Acuña
Download or read book U.S. Latino Issues written by Rodolfo F. Acuña and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revision of the popular previous edition published more than a decade earlier, this work examines today's U.S. Latino population-now arguably the most important "minority group" in the country, with numbers well over 50 million strong in an increasingly diverse and integrated America. Latinos are the largest minority in the United States, and as such, Latino Americans have a tremendous influence on the culture, workforce, economy, and politics of this country. This second edition of U.S. Latino Issues provides updated content, stats, and data for each topic, and it frames critical questions and multiple viewpoints on Latinos in the United States that will be useful to student researchers. The responses to the critical questions come from Latino experts and scholars and other well-known subject experts, providing readers with insights from various informed points of view-all in a single volume. The book covers hundreds of topics regarding Latino Americans, such as gender, sexuality, indigenous culture, race and cultural identity, health and wellness, education, and interracial dating and marriage, and it offers in-depth comparisons of the Latino groups and shows how events in their native countries affect them. Readers will have access to concise and up-to-date information on controversial topics such as affirmative action, immigration reform, open borders policy versus border enforcement, changing relations between the United States and Cuba, and Puerto Rico's contested status as a commonwealth versus a state.
