Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into three major sections. The first discusses provisions of the MMPA and the ESA that form the foundation for most marine mammal protection programs. The second profiles protection programs for all 22 listed taxa. Each profile summarizes information on the taxon's status, major threats, management framework, critical habitat, recovery planning, major management actions, and staffing and funding levels. The third summarizes overall trends in protection programs for the listed species and populations, based on those profiles. Appendices include tables and charts with estimates of expenditures for related conservation programs, additional details regarding key provisions of the MMPA and the ESA, and information on the status of the various taxa.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commission reviewed 22 marine mammal taxa (i.e., species, subspecies, or population stocks) that occur regularly or entirely within U.S. waters and that are either listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act or designated as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The review considered methods for identifying taxa at elevated risk of extinction, evidence regarding their viability, threats to their conservation, and the current status and funding for recovery programs. The review also included an in-depth case study of the cost-effectiveness of recovery efforts for the North Atlantic right whale. Of the 22 taxa, 2 are not considered to be viable: the Caribbean monk seal is considered extinct and the AT1 population of killer whales appears to be on the verge of extinction. The remaining 20 taxa are considered viable; that is, they can persist and recover if human-related threats are identified and addressed. Historical data indicate that many wild species, including a number of marine mammal taxa, have recovered from low numbers when human-related threats were managed effectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Marine Mammals of the World describes and illustrates newly discovered and rarely photographed species, making it the most comprehensive and up-to-date identification guide available. This edition continues to meet the research-focused needs of marine biologists and conservation biologists by providing a tremendous influx of new photos, taking advantage of advances in digital and auto-focusing photography, and the emergence of marine mammal studies and "whalewatching" around the world. The book encompasses cetacean, pinniped, and sirenian species, as well as extinct species, and describes basic biology and taxonomic groupings of marine mammals. Contains superb photographs of every species of marine mammal for accurate identification Authors possess nearly 80 years of collective experience with almost all of the species and distinctive geographic forms described in the guide Provides the most detailed and anatomically accurate illustrations currently available, including more than 750 new illustrations Special emphasis is placed on the identification of species in "problem groups," such as the beaked whales, long-beaked oceanic dolphins, and southern fur seals Includes a detailed list of sources for more information Contains updated taxonomy including four new species

Book Synopsis Marine Mammals by : Peter G.H. Evans

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in marine mammals has increased dramatically in the last few decades, as evidenced by the number of books, scientific papers, and conferences devoted to these animals. Nowadays, a conference on marine mammals can attract between one and two thousand scientists from around the world. This upsurge of interest has resulted in a body of knowledge which, in many cases, has identified major conservation problems facing particular species. At the same time, this knowledge and the associated activities of environmental organisations have served to introduce marine mammals to a receptive public, to the extent that they are now perceived by many as the living icons of biodiversity conservation. Much of the impetus for the current interest in marine mammal conservation comes from "Save the Whale" campaigns started in the 1960s by environmental groups around the world, in response to declining whale populations after over-exploitation by humans. This public pressure led to an international moratorium on whaling recommended in 1972 by the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, and eventually adopted by the International Whaling Commission ten years later. This moratorium largely holds sway to this day, and further protective measures have included the delimitation of extensive areas of the Indian Ocean (1979) and Southern Ocean (1994) as whale sanctuaries.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Marine Mammal Biology and Conswervation by : Simmonds, M.P
Download or read book An Introduction to Marine Mammal Biology and Conswervation written by Simmonds, M.P and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charismatic mammals that live in the ocean are a constant source of interest, both for scientists and our society at large. Their biology, behavior, and conservation are of utmost importance, as a vast number of species are currently threatened. Intended for the upper-level undergraduate or graduate student within biology, marine biology, or conservation/environmental science, An Introduction to Marine Mammal Biology and Conservation provides a broad introduction to marine mammal biology using cutting edge information and student-friendly learning tools. The text begins with chapters on the evolution and classification of marine mammals and their general biology. It moves on to discuss the behavior and ecology of different groups of marine mammals, such as polar bears, otters, and cetaceans. Part 3 dives into many different conservation issues facing marine mammals, as well as discussions on how they can be addressed. Closing chapters provide information on how scientists study marine mammals, how society can enjoy observing the animals while making sure they are preserved, and a word to students looking to pursue a career with marine mammals.
