I shall be referring to it frequently to slake my curiosity and to settle bets.”--Tom Lehrer This bountiful book is a comprehensive guide to the thousands of films, DVDs, and videocassettes featuring operas and opera singers from 1896 to the present. From ABC Television to Franco Zeffirelli, the encyclopedia is a storehouse of fascinating information for film and opera aficionados and casual browsers alike. Find answers to such questions as: * What were the first operas filmed? * Why did they make silent films of operas? * Why was a pseudo-opera written for Citizen Kane? * What was the title of Maria Callas’s only film? Organized alphabetically with more than 1,900 fully cross-referenced entries, the book casts a wide net that covers not only expected topics--operas, operettas, zarzuelas, composers, singers, conductors, writers, and film directors--but also the unexpected and offbeat--animated opera, first operas on film, puppet opera films, silent films about opera, and many other lesser-known topics. Encyclopedia of Opera on Screen illuminates the many intersections between opera and film as never before.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American History and Encyclopedia of Music Opera, Vol. 1: With Introduction Aim of opera writers, they now had to shuffle off some of the fprmularies which had grown up in the service of musical beauty and stood in the way of the truthful dramatic expression, and thus we reach the age of reform, of which Gluck and Wagner are the shining lights. These men regenerators of the old quite as much as they were reformers of contemporaneous art - opened the way to the absolute freedom exercised by the composers of today, and give at least some measure of justification to the methods of the latest revolutionary, Richard Strauss, in whose Salome, music surrenders all its functions as an independent art, and becomes a mere adjunct of the drama; a part of the scene, an emotional voice in the service of the ugly as well as of the beautiful, realistic and delineative. Book excerpt: The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Cultural and Intellectual History brings together in one two-volume set the record of the nation's values, aspirations, anxieties, and beliefs as expressed in both everyday life and formal bodies of thought. Over the past twenty years, the field of cultural history has moved to the center of American historical studies, and has come to encompass the experiences of ordinary citizens in such arenas as reading and religious practice as well as the accomplishments of prominent artists and writers. Some of the most imaginative scholarship in recent years has emerged from this burgeoning field. The scope of the volume reflects that development: the encyclopedia incorporates popular entertainment ranging from minstrel shows to video games, middlebrow ventures like Chautauqua lectures and book clubs, and preoccupations such as "Perfectionism" and "Wellness" that have shaped Americans' behavior at various points in their past and that continue to influence attitudes in the present. The volumes also make available recent scholarly insights into the writings of political scientists, philosophers, feminist theorists, social reformers, and other thinkers whose works have furnished the underpinnings of Americans' civic activities and personal concerns. Anyone wishing to understand the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of the United States from the early days of settlement to the twenty-first century will find the encyclopedia invaluable.

Book excerpt: 1787 to 1815 was a turbulent period for the Jewish community in the Netherlands. Compared with other cities, Amsterdam had a relatively large Jewish minority. In fact, Amsterdam contained more Jews within its boundaries than any other municipality in Europe. They enjoyed complete freedom of religion, but economic discrimination left the majority of them penniless. Moreover, a bitter internal conflict broke out between the enlightened and the orthodox Jews, leading to a fierce controversy and the foundation of a separate congregation. The Emancipation Decree issued under the influence of the French (1796), and the efforts of King Louis Bonaparte and King William I to integrate the Jewish community into Dutch society, failed to be effective during most of this period: the large Ashkenazic majority within the Dutch Jewish community refused to yield to the authorities' integrationist policy. This book offers a new and original analysis of both the political, economical, religious and literary aspects of this fascinating and tumultuous era.
