Book excerpt: 'Pascendi Dominici gregis', which is translated in English to 'Feeding the Lord's Flock' is a papal encyclical letter promulgated by Pope Pius X. Pius X viewed the church as under siege, intellectually from rationalism and materialism, politically from liberalism and anti-clericalism. The pope condemned modernism, a loose movement of Catholic biblical scholars, philosophers and theologians who believed that the church could not ignore new scientific historical research concerning the Bible.

Book Synopsis On the Dignity of Society by : F Russell Hittinger
Download or read book On the Dignity of Society written by F Russell Hittinger and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2024-05 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, Francis Russell Hittinger shows that Catholic social teaching is not only an articulate defense of the dignity of the human person, but perhaps more fundamentally an elucidation of the dignity of society. Indeed, Hittinger enables us to see that one cannot properly defend the dignity of the person without also showing the dignity of societies in which human persons - as naturally familial, political, and ecclesial animals - seek their own perfection in communion with others. Hittinger has been a renowned scholar of Catholic social doctrine for some time now, and the essays presented here are the fruit of his mature thinking on the topic over the course of many years. As each chapter shows, Hittinger's historically important body of work on Catholic moral and social philosophy and theology is rooted in natural law theory and Thomistic philosophy, but also animated by St. Augustine's thought and thus consistently sensitive to historical contexts and arenas for moral and theological disputation. These magisterial essays therefore integrate historical studies of the development of Catholic social teaching with systematic exposition of the theological coherence of that tradition, while also articulating the essential role of philosophy and natural law within both. The volume is divided into three parts. The first part is comprised of six essays on Catholic social teaching, the second part is made up of six essays on natural law and its role in social doctrine, and the third part includes two essays discussing the first principles of the Church's teaching on social issues. This collection will no doubt become a standard in the field of scholarship on Catholic social teaching.

Download or read book Pascendi Dominici Gregis written by Pius X. Pope St. and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-26 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promulgated on September 8, 1907, Pascendi Dominici Gregis ("Feeding the Lord's Flock") is a powerful and prophetic encyclical offered by Pope St. Pius X at a critical time in the Catholic Church. In it, the Holy Father diagnoses and details the burgeoning of Modernism in the Church. He goes on to condemn Modernism and prescribe measures to prevent, retard, and extirpate it from the Church. Read in the light of the ecclesiastical chaos that would emerge in the 1960's and flourish in the decades thereafter, it becomes clear that Pope St. Pius X was correct in his concern about (and desire to destroy) the plague of Modernism.
Download or read book Absolute Power written by Paul Collins and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sensational story of the last two centuries of the papacy, its most influential pontiffs, troubling doctrines, and rise in global authority In 1799, the papacy was at rock bottom: The Papal States had been swept away and Rome seized by the revolutionary French armies. With cardinals scattered across Europe and the next papal election uncertain, even if Catholicism survived, it seemed the papacy was finished. In this gripping narrative of religious and political history, Paul Collins tells the improbable success story of the last 220 years of the papacy, from the unexalted death of Pope Pius VI in 1799 to the celebrity of Pope Francis today. In a strange contradiction, as the papacy has lost its physical power -- its armies and states -- and remained stubbornly opposed to the currents of social and scientific consensus, it has only increased its influence and political authority in the world.

Book Synopsis Popes Against Modern Errors by : Tan Books
Download or read book Popes Against Modern Errors written by Tan Books and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1789, the French Revolution took place and launched a host of religious, political and social errors which the Popes for over 160 years afterwards wrote and legislated against. Yet most of these errors have spread and today have filtered down to the common man... with the result that most people now take for granted many fundamental assumptions that are positively false! But almost from the beginning of these errors, the Popes spoke out as with one voice, inveighing against them. Today, as we see these errors bearing evil fruit, many thoughtful Catholics are returning to those Papal documents which condemned these modern errors, to examine what the Popes have said all along about them. Here, in one handy volume, are the best and most famous of those papal denunciations: - On Liberalism (Mirari Vos). Gregory XVI. 1832. - On Current Errors (Quanta Cura). Pius IX. 1864. - The Syllabus of Errors. Pius IX. 1864. - On Government Authority (Diuturnum Illud). Leo XIII. 1881. - On Freemasonry and Naturalism (Humanum Genus). Leo XIII. 1884. - On the Nature of True Liberty (Libertas Praestantissimum). Leo XIII. 1888. - On the Condition of the Working Classes (Rerum Novarum). Leo XIII. 1891. - On Christian Democracy (Graves de Communi Re). Leo XIII. 1901. - Syllabus Condemning the Errors of the Modernists (Lamentabili Sane). St. Pius X. 1907. - On Modernism (Pascendi Dominici Gregis). St. Pius X. 1907. - Our Apostolic Mandate (On the "Sillon"). St. Pius X. 1910. - The Oath Against Modernism. St. Pius X. 1910. - On the Feast of Christ the King (Quas Primas). Pius XI. 1925. - On Fostering True Religious Unity (Mortalium Animos). Pius XI. 1928. - On Atheistic Communism (Divini Redemptoris). Pius XI. 1937. - On Certain False Opinions (Humani Generis). Pius XII. 1950. After this book, the reader will be forced to conclude: "The Popes were right all along!" Only by heeding the advice and counsel of these enlightened Roman Pontiffs will the world be able to cast off its yoke of error and enjoy once more the true freedom Our Lord spoke of when He said, "If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32).

This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many problems which excite general concern in the Catholic Church today are issues regarding the ministerial priesthood. Lack of collegiality with the authority structure of the Church and other circumstances have contributed to the frustration of many priests. Of this unfortunate state of affairs, this study carried out in the light of the apostolic constitution Pastor Bonus of John Paul II aims to address some of those pertinent matters confronting priests in their day to day living. Its many features include the sanctification and ongoing formation of clerics, clerical rights and obligations, the equitable distribution of the clergy in the world and priestly sustenance. It also examines the pastoral leadership of parish priests in their sacramental role as pater familias in the community of faith and the challenges confronting pastoral ministry in todays parishes.

Book Synopsis The General Chapter in a Religious Institute by : Elizabeth M. Cotter
Download or read book The General Chapter in a Religious Institute written by Elizabeth M. Cotter and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical antecedents of the concept of general chapter, the supreme authority in an institute of consecrated life. This provides the basis for an examination of the contemporary understanding of the nature of its power and authority, as portrayed in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The general chapter is analysed in terms of its juridic status, collegial nature, participative character and representative function as well as its dynamic aspects and faith dimension. The author applies the findings to one institute of consecrated life, Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Loreto Branch. This application provides an example of the challenges inherent in working participatively and collaboratively within a hierarchical structure. Because consecrated life has an inalienable ecclesial dimension, understanding authority and power and their exercise in institutes of consecrated life has relevance for understanding authority and its exercise in other organs of authority at all levels in the church.
Book Synopsis The Council Sect governs in the Vatikan by : Hubertus Huber
Download or read book The Council Sect governs in the Vatikan written by Hubertus Huber and published by Katholiken-SOS Verein, 9053 Teufen, Postfach. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline of the Catholic Church is visible everywhere. We cannot just stand there and do nothing. With the II Vaticanum the crash was initiated. Under the title: "The Council Sect in the Vatican" Hubertus Huber unsparingly describes, on 100 pages, the course of this decay. Here is a short summary: With the French Revolution, the enemies of the Church / God appeared bluntly and openly. The freemasons declared 1859 in "Alte Vendita": "Our goal is that of Voltaire, the complete destruction of Catholicism and even Christian doctrine". 1910 Rudolf Steiner: "We need a council and someone to proclaim it. 24.6.1917 in Rome: "Satan must reign in the Vatican, the Pope must be his slave". 1962 33 Orders of the Grand Master to the Masonic Bishops were released, described in this book. These are historical facts and not conspiracy theories. With the Second Vatican Council and the Masonic Pope, John XXIII, the house on the Rock of Peter started to crumble. The disaster of Catholicism is visible to everyone. The decline of faith did not begin with the faithful. The divinity of Jesus was denied by Prof. Joseph Ratzinger: "God did not become man, but a man became God". It is incomprehensible why the right-believing clergy and the faithful, in the face of this open declaration of war of hell, did nothing. Both were in sleep mode. How deep must one sleep and fall to receive the Lord in the sacrament with the "paw" (standing, of course)?
