Book Synopsis The Good And Evil Serpent by : James H. Charlesworth
Download or read book The Good And Evil Serpent written by James H. Charlesworth and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The serpent of ancient times was more often associated with positive attributes like healing and eternal life than it was with negative meanings. This groundbreaking book explores in plentiful detail the symbol of the serpent from 40,000 BCE to the present, and from diverse regions in the world. In doing so it emphasizes the creativity of the biblical authors' use of symbols and argues that we must today reexamine our own archetypal conceptions with comparable creativity.--From publisher description.

Download or read book Enchanted New York written by Kevin Dann and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fantastical field guide to the hidden history of New York's magical past Manhattan has a pervasive quality of glamour—a heightened sense of personality generated by a place whose cinematic, literary, and commercial celebrity lends an aura of the fantastic to even its most commonplace locales. Enchanted New York chronicles an alternate history of this magical isle. It offers a tour along Broadway, focusing on times and places that illuminate a forgotten and sometimes hidden history of New York through site-specific stories of wizards, illuminati, fortune tellers, magicians, and more. Progressing up New York’s central thoroughfare, this guidebook to magical Manhattan offers a history you won’t find in your Lonely Planet or Fodor’s guide, tracing the arc of American technological alchemies—from Samuel Morse and Robert Fulton to the Manhattan Project—to Mesmeric physicians, to wonder–working Madame Blavatsky, and seers Helena Roerich and Alice Bailey. Harry Houdini appears and disappears, as the world’s premier stage magician’s feats of prestidigitation fade away to reveal a much more mysterious—and meaningful—marquee of magic. Unlike old-world cities, New York has no ancient monuments to mark its magical adolescence. There is no local memory embedded in the landscape of celebrated witches, warlocks, gods, or goddesses—no myths of magical metamorphoses. As we follow Kevin Dann in geographical and chronological progression up Broadway from Battery Park to Inwood, each chapter provides a surprising picture of a city whose ever-changing fortunes have always been founded on magical activity.

But at the age of seventeen, his parents are murdered by humans. He had to leave his home and his best friend turned true love, Xanthanasia Etienne, and go into hiding lest the enemy kills him too. That very same day, he told Xanthanasia he loved her, but Ambros never heard her say it back. Years later he returned, but Ambros is different. He has asked for Xanthanasia’s hand in marriage, but she could see that he was not the same elf she knew. Could she blame him? Before his parents died, he was happy and friendly. After, he was angry and was filled with hate and contempt. Xanthanasia couldn’t stand him anymore and had fallen out of love with him. Could it be that the way he was now is because Xanthanasia never told him she loved him? Ambros and her father won’t even let her talk to anyone they deemed unworthy, and that included her friends. Once she met Zarek Melrena, she felt alive again. Her mother approved of her budding friendship with Zarek, but when her father objected to their growing friendship, Xanthanasia decided to leave with Zarek on an adventure to different lands. She learned lots of things from Zarek, and even made a few friends along the way. However, someone was following them, watching their every move. Who could it be? And why would they care what two inconsequential elves are doing? Will Ambros ever be the way he was before his parents died? Will Xanthanasia get the old Ambros that she fell in love with back, or will she find new love with Zarek?

Book Synopsis Enchanted Maidens by : James M. Taggart
Download or read book Enchanted Maidens written by James M. Taggart and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish villagers tell many folktales that describe in metaphorical language the struggles of young men and women as they emerge from their parental families and join in love. In this book James Taggart presents dozens of orally transmitted tales, including "Snow White," "Cinderella," "Beauty and the Beast," "Blancaflor," and dragonslayer stories, collected from seven villages in the region of CNBceres, and analyzes the differences in male and female approaches to telling them. His study shows how men and women use the tales to grapple with some of the contradictions found in gender relations in their culture, which conditions men to be sexually assertive and to marry virgins and which teaches women to fear the men who court them. Taggart interprets the male-female dialogue voiced through storytelling by linking the content of specific tales to the life experiences and gender of the storyteller. Men and women, he finds, carry out an exchange of ideas by retelling the same stories and altering the plots and characters to express their respective views of courtship. This indirect narrative dialogue conveys an understanding of the opposite sex and establishes a common model of marriage that permits men and women to overcome their fear of each other and bond in heterosexual love.
Book Synopsis The Northern Enchantment by : Margaret Jonas
Download or read book The Northern Enchantment written by Margaret Jonas and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of "north" suggests much more than wintry cold, ice, and snow. To many, it hints at something magical, enchanting, and mysterious. This book explores the spiritual aspect of this attraction through a survey of ancient history, Norse mythology, and contemporary studies of Earth mysteries and sacred sites. Through her detailed research, Margaret Jonas traces the birth of Celtic Christianity in the British Isles, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Germany to reveal a time when ancient prophecies related to the Sun and divine beings came to fulfillment. A new spiritual wisdom gradually spread across Europe--not just northward from the south, but also eastward from west. The author describes how a paradisiacal element from the earliest stages of Earth's evolution was preserved and nurtured in hidden places associated with the northern mysteries. This fascinating work of accessible scholarship features chapters on Hyperborea, Thule, and Apollo; the Druids and Odinic Mysteries; Norway and the Celtic Christian Legacy; the Number Five and the Etheric Body; the Externsteine and the God Vidar, and Finland. The book concludes with hints of a future when northern magic will be transformed, and "new clairvoyant faculties will be within the reach of all humanity."

Book Synopsis Enchanted Evenings by : Geoffrey Block
Download or read book Enchanted Evenings written by Geoffrey Block and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new second edition of Enchanted Evenings offers theater lovers an illuminating behind-the-scenes tour of some of America's best loved, most admired, and most enduring musicals. Readers will find such all-time favorites as Show Boat, Carousel, Kiss Me, Kate, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Phantom of the Opera. Geoffrey Block provides a documentary history of each of the musicals, showing how each work took shape and revealing, at the same time, how the American musical evolved from the 1920s to today, both on stage and on screen. The book's particular focus is on the music, offering a wealth of detail about how librettist, lyricist, composer, and director work together to shape the piece. Block also includes trenchant social commentary and lively backstage anecdotes. Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Kurt Weill, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Frank Loesser, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and other luminaries emerge as hardworking craftsmen under enormous pressure to sell tickets without compromising their dramatic vision. The second edition includes a greatly expanded chapter on Sondheim, a new chapter on Lloyd Webber, and two new chapters on the film adaptations of the main musicals featured in the text (including such hard to find films as the original 1936 version of Anything Goes and the 1959 film adaptation of Porgy and Bess). Packed with information, including a complete discography and plot synopses and song-by-song scenic outlines for each of the fourteen shows, Enchanted Evenings is an essential reference as well as a riveting history. "A solid and fascinating work that should become a model of how to investigate and report on the evolution of a musical. Block's research is persuasive and his writing vivid. . . Indispensable for anyone who cares to know more about Broadway musicals than Playbill can provide." --Steven Bach, The Los Angeles Times Book Review
