Book excerpt: Employment Law: Going Beyond Compliance to Engagement and Empowerment, by Rosemarie Feuerbach Twomey, focuses on the laws that have the greatest impact on the relationships between employers and employees—in particular, the common law governing the employment relationship which has dramatically changed the application of the employment at will doctrine, and the many statutory requirements of fair employment practices that promote equal opportunity to all employees. The book is premised on three core beliefs: 1.Managers can gain a meaningful understanding of the laws that apply to the employer-employee relationship and the implications of those laws for how business is conducted. 2.Compliance with employment laws is best accomplished by following effective management practices that include fair treatment of workers. 3.Understanding, appreciating, and following the spirit of employment laws—and not being unreasonably constrained by the letter of those laws—will contribute significantly to the strategic goals of any organization.

Book Synopsis United States Code by : United States
Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 1506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Book Synopsis Corporate Environmental Responsibility by : Neil Gunningham
Download or read book Corporate Environmental Responsibility written by Neil Gunningham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, industry has been accused of sacrificing sustainable development in the pursuit of short-term profit. Yet today, under the banner of Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER), a growing number of business organizations are claiming to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. So, what is this emerging phenomenon of CER and what does it aspire to achieve? How pervasive is it and what are its implications for both business and the environment? This collection of essential articles and papers maps the development of the CER concept, traces the principal debates concerning its contribution to environmental protection, assesses the evidence as to what extent corporations are seeking to "do well be doing good" and explains why some companies have gone down this path when others, similarly situated, have been unwilling to do so. In essence, it asks: what has CER accomplished, what can it accomplish, and what is beyond its reach?
Book Synopsis Privacy on the Ground by : Kenneth A. Bamberger
Download or read book Privacy on the Ground written by Kenneth A. Bamberger and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of corporate privacy management in the United States, Germany, Spain, France, and the United Kingdom, identifying international best practices and making policy recommendations. Barely a week goes by without a new privacy revelation or scandal. Whether by hackers or spy agencies or social networks, violations of our personal information have shaken entire industries, corroded relations among nations, and bred distrust between democratic governments and their citizens. Polls reflect this concern, and show majorities for more, broader, and stricter regulation—to put more laws “on the books.” But there was scant evidence of how well tighter regulation actually worked “on the ground” in changing corporate (or government) behavior—until now. This intensive five-nation study goes inside corporations to examine how the people charged with protecting privacy actually do their work, and what kinds of regulation effectively shape their behavior. And the research yields a surprising result. The countries with more ambiguous regulation—Germany and the United States—had the strongest corporate privacy management practices, despite very different cultural and legal environments. The more rule-bound countries—like France and Spain—trended instead toward compliance processes, not embedded privacy practices. At a crucial time, when Big Data and the Internet of Things are snowballing, Privacy on the Ground helpfully searches out the best practices by corporations, provides guidance to policymakers, and offers important lessons for everyone concerned with privacy, now and in the future.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge Handbook of U.S. Labor Law for the Twenty-First Century by : Richard Bales
Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of U.S. Labor Law for the Twenty-First Century written by Richard Bales and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years in the United States, unions have been in deep decline, while income and wealth inequality have grown. In this timely work, editors Richard Bales and Charlotte Garden - with a roster of thirty-five leading labor scholars - analyze these trends and show how they are linked. Designed to appeal to those being introduced to the field as well as experts seeking new insights, this book demonstrates how federal labor law is failing today's workers and disempowering unions; how union jobs pay better than nonunion jobs and help to increase the wages of even nonunion workers; and how, when union jobs vanish, the wage premium also vanishes. At the same time, the book offers a range of solutions, from the radical, such as a complete overhaul of federal labor law, to the incremental, including reforms that could be undertaken by federal agencies on their own.

Book Synopsis Inclusive Environments and Access to Commercial Property by : Adrian Tagg
Download or read book Inclusive Environments and Access to Commercial Property written by Adrian Tagg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and examines the challenges and compromises required to deliver inclusivity in the existing commercial-built environment and the socio-economic benefits that could result from successfully delivering it. To illuminate the advantages of an inclusive environment to property owners, investors and service providers, the book covers the history of disability and evolution of the legislation and examines the demographics and types of disability to question the ‘one size’ ‘blanket’ approach that currently exists to providing access. Delving further into the characteristics of the commercial property sectors and individual disability-specific requirements, experienced commercial building surveyor, Adrian Tagg, analyses the contradictions in the existing legislation to establish examples of design compromise or reasonable adjustments. He seeks to contextualise public and commercial attitudes to disability and go further to demystify the term ‘reasonable adjustment’, which is used currently as a tool of compromise in providing access. The aim is to assess disability-specific requirements for access, as well as adopt a simplistic approach to developing access solutions to the existing built environment from a consultancy and user perspective. Ultimately, this publication hopes to promote accessibility and inclusion from the perspective of surveyors, investors and landlords working in commercial property. It is not just targeted at those on undergraduate or post-graduate surveying courses, as well as those early career professionals undertaking their APC or post-graduate qualifications, but also at those owning or delivering goods, services and employment from commercial premises who want to make a difference.
