Book excerpt: The cyclical nature and severity of economic recessions over the past several decades emphasize a need to address the influence of family economic strain on married couples. Guided by past literature and the family stress and coping theory, the current study utilizes prospective data from 370 middle-aged, married couples over the course of a 12-year period between two major US recessions lasting from 1989 to 2001 to investigate the role of family economic strain on marital quality and marital stability through the intra-individual and dyadic associations of work-family conflict and marital support. Using secondary data from the Iowa Youth and Families Project (IYFP) and Midlife Transition Project (MTP), this study proposes that work-family conflict, marital support, and marital quality mediates the relationship between family economic strain and marital stability. Consistent with family stress and coping theory, the findings support the hypothesis that negative consequences of family economic strain on marital quality and marital stability are diminished through the coping mechanisms of positive perceptions of work-family conflict and marital support for husbands and wives.

Book excerpt: Kanter (1977) conceptualized five dimensions of the interdependence between work and family: occupational subculture, job absorption, time and timing, rewards and resources, and the emotional climate of work. Each of these dimensions affects the functioning and satisfaction of families and marriages. This research examined how four of these dimensions (occupational subculture, job absorption, time and timing, and the emotional climate) influenced the marital satisfaction of physicians and their spouses. It was hypothesized that physicians and their spouses' marital satisfaction would be affected by each of the four dimensions, as well as the following physicians' work-related activities: number of hours physicians work per week, physicians' working environment, the physician's medical specialty, and the period of time that physicians' medical practice is generally the most successful (age 35-45). Included in this study was the development of a scale to assess the dimensions of work/ family overlap. The results indicated that of the four work/family dimensions, work satisfaction was the only predictor of physicians' marital satisfaction. For physicians' spouses, physicians' work satisfaction and physicians' work involvement were predictors of spouses' marital satisfaction. Within the categories of work-related demographics, age was the only variable impacting the marital satisfaction of physicians and spouses. Physicians experienced the lowest marital satisfaction during ages 35-45. Spouses experienced the lowest level of marital satisfaction during years 35-65. A combined model of the work/family dimensions and work/family demographics indicated that physicians and spouses had different predictor variables of marital satisfaction, depending on work-related activities. Discussion focused on the differences between physicians and their spouses, the limitations of the study, suggestions for future research, and implications for intervention.

Chrisler The Development of Gender Studies in Psychology Studies of sex differences are as old as the ?eld of psychology, and they have been conducted in every sub?eld of the discipline. There are probably many reasons for the popularity of these studies, but three reasons seem to be most prominent. First, social psychological studies of person perception show that sex is especially salient in social groups. It is the ?rst thing people notice about others, and it is one of the things we remember best (Fiske, Haslam, & Fiske, 1991; Stangor, Lynch, Duan, & Glass, 1992). For example, people may not remember who uttered a witty remark, but they are likely to remember whether the quip came from a woman or a man. Second, many people hold ?rm beliefs that aspects of physiology suit men and women for particular social roles. Men’s greater upper body strength makes them better candidates for manual labor, and their greater height gives the impression that they would make good leaders (i. e. , people we look up to). Women’s reproductive capacity and the caretaking tasks (e. g. , breastfeeding, baby minding) that accompany it make them seem suitable for other roles that require gentleness and nurturance. Third, the logic that underlies hypothesis testing in the sciences is focused on difference. Researchers design their studies with the hope that they can reject the null hypothesis that experimental groups do not differ.
