Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a focus on some of the main markers and challenges that are at the core of the study of structural transformations in contemporary capitalism and their implications for labour in the Global South. It examines the diverse perspectives and regional and social variations that characterise labour relations as a result of the uneven development which is an important facet of the intensification of capitalist accumulation.. The book provides important insights into the impact of the crises of capitalism on the wellbeing of labour at different historical junctures. Some of the issues covered by it include the conditions of work, and the changing composition of laboring classes and/or working people. The chapters also throw light on the multiple trajectories in the development of labour relations and employment in the Global South, especially after the ascendancy and domination of neoliberal finance capitalism. Some of the major aspects considered by the essays include the decentering of production and development of global value systems, crisis of social reproduction, and the rising informalisation of work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The link between trade liberalisation and poverty has arguably been one of the most debated topics in development policy debate. Existing studies on the subject have primarily used multi-country cross-sectional data, and there is a growing concern about the limitations of this approach in providing a sound empirical basis for informing the policy debate. These limitations point to the need for undertaking in-depth analyses within individual countries over time. In order to examine the connection between trade liberalisation and poverty, this book provides case studies of trade policy reforms and poverty reduction outcomes of seven countries in South Asia - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The South Asia region allows for an excellent comparative study given the widespread emphasis on liberalisation reforms in the region over the past two decades, as well as highlighting significant inter-country differences in terms of the timing and comprehensiveness of reforms, and the heavy concentration of world poverty in the region. This book is a useful contribution to studies on South Asia, as well as International Trade and Development Economics.

Book excerpt: About the book Women Workers Vulnerability The unorganized sector comprises a major part of the Indian Economy. In the unorganized sector, those enterprises and employments are involved which are unregistered under any legal provision. This Book deals with the women workers in the unorganized sector of the economy in India. The term ‘unorganized’ is often used in the Indian context to refer to the vast numbers of women and men engaged in different forms of employment. These forms include home-based work, self-employment in household enterprises, small units, on land as agricultural workers, labour on construction sites, domestic work, and many other forms of casual or temporary employment. The unorganized sector is physically more visible in India. It is found in almost all the industrial segments of the Indian economy, that is, in agriculture, industry, household and the services sectors. More than 90% of manpower contributes to the unorganized sector globally. In, the Indian scenario, 86% of human resource is employed in the unorganized sector. Female workers form the largest segment of India’s unorganized workforce. 91% of women workers in the unorganized sector are rendering their services. They work in unorganized sectors for low wages due to low level of skills, illiteracy, ignorance and surplus labour and thus face a high level of exploitation. The social and economic profile of female workers is greatly affected by the nature of the industrial sector where they work. This book focuses on presenting the real picture of the current conditions of women workers in all the tehsils of the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, who are involved in four kinds of unorganized occupations i.e., domestic, vendors, construction and self-employment.. This book throws light on their role, nature of work, living standards, vulnerability and the problems which they are facing frequently in unorganized sector. This book also outlines the acts and schemes by the Indian government framed for the empowerment of women economically and to prevent them from exploitation. And last, suggestions given by authors for their welfare.
