Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's remarkable economic transition and capacity for dynamic growth has stunned the world. Throughout the period of economic reform, China has been moving towards the creation of a labour market. The scale of this transformation is unprecedented. New economic incentives, vast labour migration, draconian retrenchment of state workers, and sharply rising wage inequality are all characteristic of this unique transition. Drawing on more than a decade of survey-based research, the authors systematically document and analyse this important transformation. They use economic and sociological theory, institutional analysis and political economy to fully explain the causes, pressures, obstacles and consequences of the move towards a labour market in China. It is argued that much progress has been made towards the creation of a labour market but that the process is far from complete.

Book Synopsis China's Labor Market Performance and Challenges by : Mr.Ray Brooks
Download or read book China's Labor Market Performance and Challenges written by Mr.Ray Brooks and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-11-01 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A more market-oriented labor market has emerged in China in the past twenty years with growing importance of the urban private sector, as state-owned enterprises have downsized. Despite the progress on reforms, a sizable surplus of labor still exists in the rural sector and state-owned enterprises. The main challenge facing China’s labor market in coming years is to absorb the surplus labor into quality jobs while adjusting to World Trade Organization (WTO) accession. This paper estimates that if annual GDP growth averages 7 percent and the employment elasticity is one-half, urban unemployment could double to about 10 percent over the next three to four years. These pressures would be limited by stronger economic growth, especially in the private sector and more labor-intensive service industries which have generated the most jobs in recent years. Therefore, policy should focus on encouraging private sector development while reducing barriers to labor mobility, improving worker skills, upgrading job search services, and strengthening the social safety net.
Book Synopsis China’s Labor Market in the “New Normal” by : Mr.Waikei W. Lam
Download or read book China’s Labor Market in the “New Normal” written by Mr.Waikei W. Lam and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As China implements reforms under the “new normal,” maintaining stability in the labor market is a priority. The country’s demography and labor dynamics are changing, after benefitting in past decades from ample cheap labor. So far, the labor market appears to be resilient, even as growth slows, driven in part by expansion of the services sector. Migrant flows and possible labor hoarding in overcapacity sectors may also help explain this. Yet, while the latter two factors help serve as shock absorbers— contributing to labor market stability in the short term—if they persist, they may delay the needed adjustment process, contributing to an inefficient allocation of resources and curtailing productivity gains. This paper quantifies to what extent structural trends and the reform pace affect employment growth under the new normal. Delays in reform implementation would weaken growth prospects in the medium term, running the risk that job creation will fall below policy targets, leading to labor market pressures in the future. In contrast, successful transition might require faster reforms, including in the overcapacity and state-owned enterprise sectors, supported by well targeted social safety nets.
Book Synopsis Job Placements And Job Shifts In China: The Effects Of Education, Family Background And Gender by : Lijuan Wu
Download or read book Job Placements And Job Shifts In China: The Effects Of Education, Family Background And Gender written by Lijuan Wu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates the impact of the market-oriented economic reform in China on a unique aspect of the labor market outcomes — individuals' access to different employment sectors, that is, the state and collective sector, the private sector, and the sector of family contract farming in the 1990s. Using the longitudinal data of China Health and Nutrition Survey, the author finds that the access to different employment sectors is not equally distributed among Chinese workers during the market transition. And the hierarchy of employment sectors is reproduced through the procedure that assorts individual workers to different employment sectors. In addition to achieved characteristics such as human capital, ascribed characteristics such as family background and gender are important factors in understanding the procedure of social stratification in the reform era. The book will be of value to social scientists interested in the market transition of socialist societies in general and the social transformation of contemporary China in particular.

Book Synopsis Female Employment and Gender Gaps in China by : Xinxin Ma
Download or read book Female Employment and Gender Gaps in China written by Xinxin Ma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book investigates female employment and the gender gap in the labor market and households during China’s economic transition period. It provides the reader with academic evidence for understanding the mechanism of female labor force participation, the determinants of the gender gap in the labor market, and the impact of policy transformation on women’s wages and employment in China from an economics perspective. The main content of this book includes three parts―women’s family responsibilities and women’s labor supply (child care, parent care, and women’s employment), the gender gap in the labor market and society (gender gaps in wages, Communist Party membership, and participation in social activity), and the impacts of policy transformation on women’s wages and employment (the social security system and the educational expansion policy on women’s wages and employment) in China. This book provides academic evidence about these issues based on economics theories and econometric analysis methods using many kinds of long-term Chinese national survey data. This book is highly recommended to readers who are interested in up-to-date and in-depth empirical studies of the gender gap and women’s employment in China during the economic transition period. This book is of interest to various groups such as readers who are interested in the Chinese economy, policymakers, and scholars with econometric analysis backgrounds.

Book Synopsis Labour Problems in the Economic Development of Urban China, 1949-1957 by : Christopher Howe
Download or read book Labour Problems in the Economic Development of Urban China, 1949-1957 written by Christopher Howe and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with China's urban employment experience between 1949 and 1957. In Chapter Two we attempt to quantify this experience by a critical examination of existing indicators of employment change for all urban areas and by the analysis of new data for individual cities. In particular we have attempted to construct a detailed picture of the demand and supply of non-agricultural labour in the city of Shanghai. The most striking feature of the data presented in Chapter Two is the evidence of the growth of open unemployment and also of very large employment fluctuations. In Chapter Three we analyse the long run trends in urban employment change, and in Chapter Four, we look closely at the size of employment fluctuations and show how these have been related both to unemployment and over-manning. Chapters One to Four constitute an analysis of the enviroment relevant to the final chapters in which we trace chronologically, the development of Chinese thinking about urban employment and the evolution of the administrative machinery designed to control the urban labour market. In Chapters Five and Six we show that during the period analysed, China's urban employment experience led to a complete re-orientation of employment policy and a transformation in the duties and powers of the institutions responsible for employment control.
Book Synopsis Gender Equality and the Labor Market by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Gender Equality and the Labor Market written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People's Republic of China (PRC) has made advances in narrowing gender gaps in its labor market. It has one of the highest female labor force participation rates in Asia and the Pacific at around 64% in 2013, and one of the narrowest earnings gender gaps. This study investigates how women are faring in the transition to the PRC's new growth model, and what can be done to promote women's participation. It shows how the PRC is undergoing multiple transitions that have implications for gender equality and work. For example, during the market transition, gender wage gaps and gender wage discrimination increased, reaching 33% in urban areas and 44% in rural areas. Find out how evidenced-based gender analysis can foster gender responsive policy approaches to promote women's equality in the labor market.
Book Synopsis Work and Inequality in Urban China by : Yanjie Bian
Download or read book Work and Inequality in Urban China written by Yanjie Bian and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic analysis of the impact of work organization on the social stratification of individuals in urban China. It explains why economic and labor market segmentation is possible and necessary in state socialism at a certain stage of its development, as in market capitalism, and how important one's work unit or danwei is to the life of socialist workers in Chinese cities. Based on survey data, personal interviews, and official statistics, the author shows that structural allocation, status inheritance, educational achievement, political virtue, and interpersonal connections (guanxi) interplay in determining an individual's opportunities for entering and moving into a desirable place to work, for obtaining Communist party membership and an elite class status, and for receiving material compensation such as wages, bonuses, fringe benefits, housing, and home locations.
