This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If you’ve ever fantasized walking and conversing with the great scientist on the subjects that consumed him, and now wish to add the fullness of reality, read this book.” —Edward O. Wilson, author of Half-Earth: Our Planet’s Fight for Life James T. Costa takes readers on a journey from Darwin’s childhood through his voyage on the HMS Beagle, where his ideas on evolution began, and on to Down House, his bustling home of forty years. Using his garden and greenhouse, the surrounding meadows and woodlands, and even the cellar and hallways of his home-turned-field-station, Darwin tested ideas of his landmark theory of evolution through an astonishing array of experiments without using specialized equipment. From those results, he plumbed the laws of nature and drew evidence for the revolutionary arguments of On the Origin of Species and other watershed works. This unique perspective introduces us to an enthusiastic correspondent, collaborator, and, especially, an incorrigible observer and experimenter. And it includes eighteen experiments for home, school, or garden. Finalist for the 2018 AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prizes for Excellence in Science Books.

Book Synopsis Darwinian Reductionism by : Alexander Rosenberg
Download or read book Darwinian Reductionism written by Alexander Rosenberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, scientists working in molecular biology embraced reductionism—the theory that all complex systems can be understood in terms of their components. Reductionism, however, has been widely resisted by both nonmolecular biologists and scientists working outside the field of biology. Many of these antireductionists, nevertheless, embrace the notion of physicalism—the idea that all biological processes are physical in nature. How, Alexander Rosenberg asks, can these self-proclaimed physicalists also be antireductionists? With clarity and wit, Darwinian Reductionism navigates this difficult and seemingly intractable dualism with convincing analysis and timely evidence. In the spirit of the few distinguished biologists who accept reductionism—E. O. Wilson, Francis Crick, Jacques Monod, James Watson, and Richard Dawkins—Rosenberg provides a philosophically sophisticated defense of reductionism and applies it to molecular developmental biology and the theory of natural selection, ultimately proving that the physicalist must also be a reductionist.

Download or read book Darwin's Legacy written by John Dupré and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Darwin transformed our understanding of the universe and our place in it with his development of the theory of evolution. 150 years later, we are still puzzling over the implications. John Dupré presents a lucid, witty introduction to evolution and what it means for our view of humanity, the natural world, and religion. He explains the right and the wrong ways to understand evolution: in the latter category fall most of the claims of evolutionary psychology, of which Dupré gives a withering critique. He shows why the theory of evolution is one of the most important scientific ideas of all time, but makes clear that it can't explain everything - contrary to widespread popular belief, it has very little to tell us about the details of human nature and human behaviour, such as language, culture, and sexuality. Darwin's Legacy clears a path through the confusion and controversy surrounding evolution; anyone who is interested in understanding what the theory of evolution can and can't do will find this a compelling and enjoyable introduction.
Book Synopsis Before and After Darwin by : M.J.S. Hodge
Download or read book Before and After Darwin written by M.J.S. Hodge and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a pair of volumes by Jonathan Hodge, collecting all his most innovative, revisionist and influential papers on Charles Darwin and on the longer run of theories about origins and species from ancient times to the present. The focus in this volume is on the diversity of theories among such pre-Darwinian authors as Lamarck and Whewell, and on developments in the theory of natural selection since Darwin. Plato's Timaeus, the Biblical Genesis and any current textbook of evolutionary biology are all, it may well seem, on this same enduring topic: origins and species. However, even among classical authors, there were fundamental disagreements: the ontology and cosmogony of the Greek atomists were deeply opposed to Plato's; and, in the millennia since, the ontological and cosmogonical contexts for theories about origins and species have never settled into any unifying consensus. While the structure of Darwinian theory may be today broadly what it was in Darwin's own argumentation, controversy continues over the old issues about order, chance, necessity and purpose in the living world and the wider universe as a whole. The historical and philosophical papers collected in this volume, and in the companion volume devoted to Darwin's theorising, seek to clarify the major continuities and discontinuities in the long run of thinking about origins and species.
Book Synopsis Alfred Russel Wallace's Theory of Intelligent Evolution by : Michael A. Flannery
Download or read book Alfred Russel Wallace's Theory of Intelligent Evolution written by Michael A. Flannery and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), co-discoverer of natural selection, was second only to Charles Darwin as the 19th century's most noted English naturalist. Yet his belief in spiritualism caused him to be ridiculed and dismissed by many. Though based upon very different formulations of natural selection, the Wallace/Darwin dispute as presented by Flannery shows a metaphysical clash of worldviews coextensive with modern evolutionary theory itself.
Book Synopsis The Evolutionary Philosophy of Chauncey Wright by : Chauncey Wright
Download or read book The Evolutionary Philosophy of Chauncey Wright written by Chauncey Wright and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-10-15 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Wright volumes look like an excellent contribution. It makes me realize again how sad it is that he did not leave more than he did. He was such a seminal figure and contributed so much by way of his reflections on science and evolution in particular as well as the role he played in the origins of pragmatism. It will be good to have the essays in one place and to see what is in the letters. Volume 3 also looks good, as it has the best interpreters and critics of the period covered.' --Professor Barbara MacKinnon In an era when American higher education was dominated by theologians and idealists, Chauncey Wright (1830-75) pioneered the cause of natural evolution and scientific empiricism. C. S. Peirce admired Wright's sheer intellect as superior to his own and to that of William James. Charles Darwin respected a mind 'so clear' that he asked him to develop a theory of the genesis of intelligence. Wright's response to this and other challenges solidifies his legacy as the first American philosopher of science. To understand the universe and our place in it, he argues, we must appeal not to theology or 'cosmic' philosophy but to scientific laws of nature. Consciousness is not an occult power, but a tool organisms utilize for adaptability and survival. Philosophy is suited to the moral and aesthetic realm, where Wright anticipates pragmatism in holding that values develop in effective social practices. Regrettably, Wright's brilliance was not vested in his temperament, and his early death at age forty-five leaves a scattering of suggestive essays but no developed system. Still, his ideas have a strikingly modern tone that establishes their relevance to later developments in evolutionary theory, pragmatism, and the philosophy of science. This 3-volume collection gathers Wright's Philosophical Discussions and Letters, each featuring a biographical sketch, with a third, reset volume of reviews and tributes, including contributions by John Fiske, C. S. Peirce, Joseph Blau and Gail Kennedy. The set is edited and introduced by Wright scholar Frank X. Ryan, with an additional introduction by prominent Wright expert Edward H. Madden. This significant collection: --provides a historical record of the development of scientific thought in America --recovers the central figure in the path from Darwin to American Evolutionism --identifies an important influence upon the foundations of pragmatism --examines a source of contemporary issues in the philosophy of cognition --foreshadows the development of utilitarian, naturalistic and pragmatic ethics in America
Book Synopsis Darwin and the General Reader by : Alvar Ellegård
Download or read book Darwin and the General Reader written by Alvar Ellegård and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1990-05-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on his investigation of over one hundred mid-Victorian British newspapers and periodicals, Alvar Ellegård describes and analyzes the impact of Darwin's theory of evolution during the first dozen years after the publication of the Origin of Species. Although Darwin's book caused an immediate stir in literary and scientific periodicals, the popular press largely ignored it. Only after the work's implications for theology and the nature of man became evident did general publications feel compelled to react; each social group responded according to his own political and religious prejudices. Ellegård charts the impact of this revolution in science, maintaining that although the idea of evolution was generally accepted, Darwin's primary contribution, the theory of natural selection, was either ignored or rejected among the public.
