Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study a quantitative scoring system for children's projective drawings (Human Figure Drawings and Kinetic Family Drawings) was tested. The system was created by Linda Peterson and Milton Hardin (1997) and focuses on specific weighted indicators in children's drawings. Subjects in the present study consisted of 105 children ages 6-12, and included 39 children in the sexually abused group, 20 children in the physically abused group, and 36 children in the non-abused group. Two raters, who were blind to both group status and the hypotheses of the study, scored each child's drawing. Overall, interrater reliabilities were acceptable for the human figure drawings (Avg. 77.66%), but were inadequate for the kinetic family drawings (63.46%) despite rigorous training in the scoring criteria. Results indicated that there were no significant differences between groups based on total drawing score, Peterson and Hardin's "Serious Seven" indicators of sexual abuse, or for indicators of physical abuse. Results also indicated that there were significant differences in score totals between the children's first and second drawings, and that children from all three groups achieved higher scores on the kinetic family drawings as compared to the human figure drawings. Conclusions from this study are that quantitative methods of analyzing children's drawings are not helpful in distinguishing between groups of children and can potentially lead to significant misclassification rates. Drawings should not be discarded, as they can be very helpful as both an assessment and a therapeutic tool. However, drawings should not be reduced to specific indicators, but should be considered in their entirety, and in light of other corroborating evidence.

Book excerpt: First published in 1988. Child therapists have long been fascinated by children's human figure drawings and what they reveal about self-image, feelings, and' family relation ships. Now this comprehensively researched volume provides a valuable introduction to using children's human figure drawings as projective measures in a variety of settings. The principles for interpreting drawings, as well as general and specific indicators, are illustrated in 85 children's drawings. Part I on The Theory deals with the background of projective psychology, discussing art as a projective technique and emphasizing that all behavior, including drawings, reflects personality, attitudes and values. The authors examine the major methods of obtaining diagnostic information and recommend the use of several methods for best results. Part II on The Application examines in detail the projective use of children's human figure drawings to evaluate personality, relationships (particularly in families), group values, and attitudes. In each area, research is presented, directions for administration of various tests are given, and guidelines for interpretation are offered. Significant factors are revealed in numerous children's drawings, accompanied by clinical comments. Of special interest is the presentation of original research on group values among Canadian Indian (Saskatchewan Cree) children and on attitudes of young children toward teachers, doctors and other authority figures as revealed in human figure drawings. For psychologists, social workers, teachers and other child-care professionals, as well as students in these fields, this is an indispensable basic guide to interpreting human figure drawings.

Although these volumes are useful in and of themselves, their maximum usefulness requires the availability and use of the Mental Measurements Yearbooks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PTSD is a recently named psychiatric condition that unknown before the publication of DSM-III in 1980. The creation of this diagnosis was intensely controversial, and there continued to be considerable reluctance to apply the term to children. The 1985 landmark volume, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Children, edited by Spencer Eth and Robert Pynoos, helped establish the validity of this condition during childhood. Now Spencer Eth has edited PTSD in Children and Adolescents, a work that brings the field of childhood trauma in to the new century by offering fresh insights on five major topic areas in child and adolescent PTSD: Techniques for comprehensive evaluation -- details recently developed diagnostic instruments and rating scales that measure the variety and severity of traumatic symptoms in children and adolescents. Forensic aspects of traumatized children -- surveys legally pertinent issues, including abuse, reliability of traumatic memories, and credibility of child victims. Juvenile offenders and incarcerated youth -- examines the role of trauma in the lives of juvenile offenders, noting that the victimization of delinquents must be specifically addressed in order for an integrated approach to treatment to achieve effective rehabilitation. Biological treatment strategies -- systematically reviews the important role of medications for PTSD in clinical practice, including such topics as biological dysregulation, target symptoms, and the inclusion of drugs into the biopsychosocial treatment plan. The relationship between exposure to trauma in childhood and the development of psychiatric disorders in adulthood -- presents current research on the long-term prognosis of traumatized children and adolescents by analyzing the association between early traumatic exposure, biological substrates, and subsequent symptomatic morbidity. Mental health practitioners and trainees, as well as attorneys, pediatricians, and school personnel, will find this thoroughly annotated volume an invaluable roadmap in their journey toward understanding PTSD and discovering more effective treatments for traumatized children and adolescents. With its eclectic perspective and interdisciplinary format, this exceptional reference will also enhance courses in developmental psychology, social work, and education.

Book excerpt: During child abuse investigations adults are often asked to report on a child's emotions and behaviors. Asking a child to draw may be a more effective approach to gathering information on that child's emotional state than a verbal interview. This exploratory study was conducted within a small New England agency that serves abused children and their families. The intent of this study is to explore the relationship between children's behaviors as observed and reported by familiar adults on Achenbach's Child Behavior Checklist, and drawing details on Koppitz's Emotional Indicators scale as expressed in the Human Figure Drawings of the same children. Although the scores on the two tests were found to be moderately correlated (r=.28), due to the small sample size the relationship falls short of statistical significance. However, post doc comparisons of the individual Emotional Indicators and the CBCL subcategories do offer some meaningful information as to which indicators are related to certain behaviors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983. In this comprehensive volume, Dr. Di Leo once again brings to the reader the fruitful combination of extensive knowledge of children's drawings and an approach to the subject that is intimate and humane, but highly sophisticated. Those familiar with his books have come to expect the lucid style with which Dr. Di Leo leads the clinician toward incisive interpretations of children's drawings, pointing out key features and using, where appropriate, parallels from the world of art and literature. His discussions of over 120 drawings reproduced in this volume cover an astonishing range of topics, including: Interpretation, Formal and Stylistic Features, Mostly Cognition (drawing a man in a boat), Mostly Affect (drawing a house), Projective Significance of Child Art, The Whole and Its Parts, Global Features, Body Parts, Sex Differences and Sex Roles in Western Society as Perceived by Children, Laterality and Its Effects on Drawing, Tree Drawings, and Personality Traits, Emotional Disorder Reflected in Drawings, Pitfalls, Role of the Arts in Education for Peace, and Reflections. In his analyses, Dr. Di Leo skillfully singles out examples of overinterpretation and other pitfalls, and answers questions such as: What does the therapist do when the child refuses to draw the family? Is the drawing a self-image? What are the differences between regressive drawings compared with the immature drawings of normal children? Even such fascinating topics as art brut, creativity, madness, and child art are discussed. The reader will find thought-provoking both the author's astute analyses and his keen awareness of the influence of society on children and the pictures they draw. Therapists in the field will find the book remarkably penetrating, while students in the field will delight in its clarity and thoroughness. Everyone who works with the drawings of children will find it absorbing.
