In all relationships, there will be stages of fluctuations. Intimacy and understanding may not always remain at a high level. Couples may sometimes feel that they are living with strangers, their passion ebbing out like a receding tide, and they may feel trapped in the same old arguments over finance or kids. And it is normal too. Life may seem to go in a monotonously boring way with all its daily stresses propelling emotional distance between the partners and ushering in boredom in the bedroom. However, the problem arises when partners neglect or fail to address these fluctuations in a constructive and positive manner. This will lead them to coldness and distance, conflicts of interests, disagreements in decisions, aggressiveness and violence in communication, even to the point of physical aggression, and ultimately, to the degeneration and dissolution of marriage and family. EFCCP proposes a novel style of communication based on Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg and Emotionally Focused Therapy by Johnson. The program will teach the couples how to engage in a compassionate communication and how to relate to their own feelings and needs as well as to that of their partners in a constructive manner, leading to reconnection and healing.

Book excerpt: As a basic unit of the society, family is vitally important for the very existence of the society. But modern society is plagued with ever growing distress and de-generation of family and marriage, paving way to physical and psychological illnesses, not just for the couples alone, but for the children and other family members as well. Various studies show that an effective communication between marital partners enhances their relationship quality; an absence of the same causes distress and discord among them. The purpose of this research was to develop an intervention program that would effectively assist couples improve their communication skills and to assess the efficacy of the researcher-developed program. Following a mixed research design of exploratory-sequential method, the researcher integrated the communication aspects of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and the emotional aspects of Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) in the development of ‘Emotion-Focused Couples’ Communication Program (EFCCP)’. The results of the study revealed that couples communication and marital satisfaction are strongly correlated. The high significance in their relationship also indicated that couples communication accounted for the changes in the level of marital satisfaction at a very high percentage. Results of the study likewise showed that the Emotion-Focused Couples’ Communication Program (EFCCP) is reliable and valid as well as highly efficacious in enhancing couples’ communication and marital satisfaction among the distressed couples. The efficacy of the program was tested in two independent experimental studies against two geographically and culturally diverse backgrounds and thus was proven culture-free.

This essential text from the leading authority on Emotionally Focused Therapy, Susan M. Johnson, and colleague, T. Leanne Campbell, applies the key interventions of EFT to work with individuals, providing an overview and clinical guide to treating clients with depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress. Designed for therapists at all levels of expertise, Johnson and Campbell focus on introducing clinicians to EFIT interventions, techniques, and change processes in a highly accessible and practical format. The book begins by summarizing attachment theory and science – the theoretical basis of this model – together with the experiential approach to change in psychotherapy. Chapters describe the three stages of EFIT, macro-interventions, such as the EFIT Tango, and various micro-interventions through clinical exercises, case studies, and transcripts to demonstrate this model in practice with individuals, highlighting the unique benefits of EFT as a cross-modality approach for treating emotional disorders. With exercises interwoven throughout the text, this book is built to accompany in-person and online training, helping the practicing clinician offer targeted and empirically tested interventions that not only alleviate symptoms of distress but expand the client’s emotional balance, agency, and sense of self. As the next major extension of the EFT approach, this book will appeal to therapists already working with couples and families as well as those just beginning their professional journey. Psychotherapists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and mental health workers will also find this book invaluable.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT - Emotionally Focused Therapy) is a structured approach to couples therapy formulated in 1980 and developed through the science of adult attachment and emotional ties to expand the understanding of what happens in relationships and to guide therapists. EFT interweaves the Theory of Emotions with the Theory of Attachment, based on the idea that emotions have great potential in themselves, which, if activated, can help the patient to change their negative emotional states and deal with emotional relationships experienced as problematic and unsatisfactory. This is a practical guide that shows you how couples therapy works on emotions. In it you will find dozens of exercises that will make you understand concretely what is the therapeutic approach and the communication that is established. Of course this manual is not intended to replace the therapist but it is a useful tool for those who want to approach this subject.

Book excerpt: In Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy: The Dynamics of Emotion, Love, and Power, authors Leslie S. Greenberg and Rhonda N. Goldman explore the foundations of emotionally focused therapy for couples. They expand its framework to focus more intently on the development of the self and the relationship system through the promotion of self-soothing and other-soothing; to deal with unmet needs both from the client's adulthood and childhood; and to work more explicitly with emotions, specifically fear, anxiety, shame, power, joy, and love. The authors discuss the affect regulation involved in three major motivational systems central to couples therapy - attachment, identity, and attraction and clarify emotions and motivations in the dominance dimension of couples' interactions.Written with practitioners and graduate students in mind, the authors use a rich variety of case material to demonstrate how working with emotions can facilitate change in couples and, by extension, in all situations where people may be in emotional conflict with others. Greenberg and Goldman provide the tools needed to identify specific emotions and show the reader how to work with them to resolve conflict and promote bonding in couples therapy.

Book excerpt: Strengthen and deepen your relationships with this "much-needed" (Harville Hendrix, PhD) guide that has sold over one million copies, through revelatory practical exercises, seven profound conversations, and sage advice from “the best couple’s therapist in the world” (John Gottman, PhD, bestselling author) Are you looking to enrich a healthy relationship, revitalize a tired one, or rescue one gone awry? We all want a lifetime of love, support, and companionship. But sometimes we need a little help. Enter Dr. Sue Johnson, developer of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy and “the most original contributor to couple’s therapy to come along in the last thirty years,” according to Dr. William J. Doherty, PhD. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Johnson shares her groundbreaking and remarkably successful program for creating stronger, more secure relationships. The message of Hold Me Tight is simple: Forget about learning how to argue better, analyzing your early childhood, making grand romantic gestures, or experimenting with new sexual positions. Instead, get to the emotional underpinnings of your relationship by recognizing that you are emotionally attached to and dependent on your partner in much the same way that a child is on a parent for nurturing, soothing, and protection. Dr. Johnson teaches that the way to enhance or save a relationship is to be open, attuned, and responsive to each other and to reestablish emotional connection. With this in mind, she focuses on key moments in a relationship and uses them as touch points for seven healing conversations, including: Recognizing the Demon Dialogues Finding the Raw Spots Revisiting a Rocky Moment Forgiving Injuries Keeping Your Love Alive These conversations give you insight into the defining moments in your relationship and guide you in reshaping these moments to create a secure and lasting bond. Through stories from Dr. Johnson’s practice, illuminating advice, and practical exercises, you will learn how to nurture, protect, and grow your relationship, ensuring a lifetime of love.
