Book excerpt: Magdalo was the nom de guerre of a man named Emilio Aguinaldo, a revolutionary hero in the mold of William Wallace, George Washington, and Emiliano Zapata. Spain ruled over the Philippine Islands for more than 300 years, finally causing a violent rebellion led by Magdalo in 1896. The United States allied with him in the 1898 war against Spain; he secured land while Admiral Dewey secured seas. The Spanish beaten, the U.S. became the imperial masters of the islandsa]an uncharacteristic move from those commonly seen as the beacon of democracy. But the Filipinos rejected that authority, thus the Spanish-American War became the Philippine-American War. We have had three specific periods in our history which are eerily similarathe Philippine-American War, the Vietnam War, and the Iraq War. To hear those who oppose U.S. authority described as insurgents or insurrectos, echoes appearathe same terms were used for the Filipinos in 1900. Aguinaldo, the first president of the Philippine Republic, first fought with us, then against us, and finally forgave and redeemed us. Magdalo the warrior became Aguinaldo the statesman.

Samkad lives deep in the Philippine jungle, and has never encountered anyone from outside his own tribe before. He's about to become a man, and while he's desperate to grow up, he's worried that this will take him away from his best friend, Little Luki, who isn't ready for the traditions and ceremonies of being a girl in her tribe. But when a bad omen sends Samkad's life in another direction, he discovers the brother he never knew he had. A brother who tells him of a people called "Americans." A people who are bringing war and destruction right to their home...A coming-of-age story set at the end of the 19th century in a remote village in the Philippines, this is a story about growing up, discovering yourself, and the impact of colonialism on native peoples and their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the Korean War is America's "forgotten war", then the Philippine American War must surely be America's "swept-under-the-rug" war. We may remember from high school history that the United States acquired the Philippines in the treaty that ended the Spanish American War, but how many of us remember that war in the Philippines followed? And yet, this war threatened to end the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt before his only elected term. Immediately after helping the Cuban people gain their freedom from an oppressive foreign nation, American found itself, largely due to Roosevelt's machinations as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, then as President, to be the foreign nation fighting to deny freedom for another oppressed people. It can certainly be argued that the people of the Philippines may have benefited over time from American involvement after the war. This volume, however, is primarily concerned with the impact on the American public and on America's image abroad that resulted from the war. The text includes the complete manuscripts of two publications, each written by a participant in that conflict. The first is Emilio Aguinaldo's TRUE VERSION OF THE PHILIPPINE REVOLUTION. Aguinaldo was the leader of the Filipino revolution against Spain, turned leader of the "insurrection" against the Americans. The second is A SOLDIER IN THE PHILIPPINES, by Needom N. Freeman, a private in the U.S. Army. Also included to add insight are photographs and other images of the war in addition to political cartoons condemning the most serious atrocities and suggestions for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Philippines Reader" illuminates the history of the continuing struggle of the Philippines people for true independence and social justice. Daniel Schirmer and Stephen Shalom have put together a single volume readings and documents providing essential background-- from the turn-of-the-century U.S. war of conquest to the new administration of Corazon Aquino. Analytical articles from varying authors explore, among other topics, the nature of the U.S. colonial regime, the role of the church, conflicts with national minorities, the situation of labor, peasants and women, and U.S. policy, as well as prospects for the future. Documentary selections in this "Philippines Reader" come from such diverse sources as the CIA and the State Department; U.S. Presidents McKinley and Reagan; Philippine leaders Aguinaldo and Aquino; Philippine nationalist and left organizations such as the Anti-Base Coalition, Bayan, Kaakbay, and the New People's Army; and U.S. opponents of foreign intervention. The editors introduce, explain, and tie together over eighty readings making this the most complete introduction available on events in the Philippines.

Book excerpt: A “fascinating” look at what students in Russia, France, Iran, and other nations are taught about America (The New York Times Book Review). This “timely and important” book (History News Network) gives us a glimpse into classrooms across the globe, where opinions about the United States are first formed. History Lessons includes selections from textbooks and teaching materials used in Russia, France, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Canada, and others, covering such events as the American Revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Iran hostage crisis, and the Korean War—providing some alternative viewpoints on the history of the United States from the time of the Viking explorers to the post-Cold War era. By juxtaposing starkly contrasting versions of the historical events we take for granted, History Lessons affords us a sometimes hilarious, often sobering look at what the world thinks about America’s past. “A brilliant idea.” —Foreign Affairs

Book excerpt: This four-volume encyclopedia chronicles the historical roots of the United States' current military dominance, documenting its growth from continental expansionism to hemispheric hegemony to global empire. This groundbreaking four-volume encyclopedia offers sweeping coverage of a subject central to American history and of urgent importance today as the nation wrestles with a global imperial posture and the long-term viability of the largest military establishment in human history. The work features more than 650 entries encompassing the full scope of American expansionism and imperialism from the colonial era through the 21st-century "War on Terror." Readers will learn about U.S.-Native American conflicts; 19th-century land laws; early forays overseas, for example, the opening of Japan; and America's imperial conflicts in Cuba and the Philippines. U.S. interests in Latin America are explored, as are the often-forgotten ambitions that lay behind the nation's involvement in the World Wars. The work also offers extensive coverage of the Cold War and today's ongoing conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, and the Middle East as they relate to U.S. national interests. Notable individuals, including American statesmen, military commanders, influential public figures, and anti-imperialists are covered as well. The inclusion of cultural elements of American expansionism and imperialism—for example, Hollywood films and protest music—helps distinguish this set from other more limited works.

It considers how nineteenth-century American popular culture, specifically political cartoons and caricatures, influenced American foreign policy. These sources, drawn from several U.S. libraries and archives, show how race and gender ideologies significantly influenced the move of the U.S. to annex the Philippines. The book not only includes a significant collection of political cartoons and caricatures about Filipinos, it also offers an alternative interpretation of the reasons why the U.S. ventured into colonial expansion in Asia.
