Download or read book Absent Mothers and Orphaned Fathers written by Susan E. Gustafson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustafson provides a comprehensive overview of Lessing's comments on the structure and purpose of the domestic tragedy within the context of his Laokoon essay, demonstrating that the fundamental psychic-deep structures informing his aesthetic and dramatic production are male narcissism and the abjection of the woman/the mother. As opposed to earlier studies of gender/generic questions in Lessing's dramas, this analysis explicates the theoretical basis for the rigid codification of gender which informs Lessing's fictional symbolic order.

Book Synopsis The Play Within the Play by : Gerhard Fischer
Download or read book The Play Within the Play written by Gerhard Fischer and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirty chapters of this innovative international study are all devoted to the topic of the play within the play. The authors explore the wide range of aesthetic, literary-theoretical and philosophical issues associated with this rhetorical device, not only in terms of its original meta-theatrical setting - from the baroque idea of a theatrum mundi onward to contemporary examples of postmodern self-referential dramaturgy - but also with regard to a variety of different generic applications, e.g. in narrative fiction, musical theatre and film. The authors, internationally recognized specialists in their respective fields, draw on recent debates in such areas as postcolonial studies, game and systems theories, media and performance studies, to analyze the specific qualities and characteristics of the play within the play: as ultimate affirmation of the 'self' (the 'Hamlet paradigm'), as a self-reflective agency of meta-theatrical discourse, and as a vehicle of intermedial and intercultural transformation. The challenging study, with its underlying premise of play as a key feature of cultural anthropology and human creativity, breaks new ground by placing the play within the play at the centre of a number of intersecting scholarly discourses on areas of topical concern to scholars in the humanities.

Book Synopsis Men Viewing Women as Art Objects by : Christoph E. Schweitzer
Download or read book Men Viewing Women as Art Objects written by Christoph E. Schweitzer and published by Camden House. This book was released on 1998 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varied images of women studied in a variety of German texts as a springboard for plot or character. A man looks at the portrait of a woman and then sets out to 'liberate'her and make her his own (Die Zauberflöte, Maria Stuart); an oldman, while looking at the picture of his youthful beloved, reminiscesabout his failedcourtship (Storm's Immensee). These are just twoof many uses of art works depicting women discussed in this book. Theart work can displace the living woman as in Hauff's 'Die Bettlerinvom Pont des Arts', in Jensen's 'Gradiva', and in Schimmang's'Intimität'. A man looking at a painting of himself (E. T. A.Hoffmann's Die Fermate) or a man looking at a sculpture comes toappreciate the beauty of the female figure, both in art and life(Stifter's Der Nachsommer). The innovative approach, which in part goes back to theories developed by Lessing in his Laokoon, yields, via a close reading of a variety of the texts, new insights into their structure and meaning.
Book Synopsis The Radical Enlightenment in Germany by :
Download or read book The Radical Enlightenment in Germany written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates the impact of the Radical Enlightenment on German culture during the eighteenth century, taking recent work by Jonathan Israel as its point of departure. The collection documents the cultural dimension of the debate on the Radical Enlightenment. In a series of readings of known and lesser-known fictional and essayistic texts, individual contributors show that these can be read not only as articulating a conflict between Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment, but also as documents of a debate about the precise nature of Enlightenment. At stake is the question whether the Enlightenment should aim to be an atheist, materialist, and political movement that wants to change society, or, in spite of its belief in rationality, should respect monarchy, aristocracy, and established religion. Contributors are: Mary Helen Dupree, Sean Franzel, Peter Höyng, John A. McCarthy, Monika Nenon, Carl Niekerk, Daniel Purdy, William Rasch, Ann Schmiesing, Paul S. Spalding, Gabriela Stoicea, Birgit Tautz, Andrew Weeks, Chunjie Zhang
