Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains actual 911 and non-emergency calls that came into the San Diego Police Department Communications Division during my 19 years working as a Police 911 Dispatcher. This book represents the calls received as accurately as possible. I did not embellish them to make the calls funnier or more exciting. These are actual calls, often unbelievable, but they are real calls. This book is a way for me to portray the "real world" life of a 911 dispatcher. Some people may not understand why or how we can make light of some of the calls in this book. You may fall into that category making this book not your cup of tea. If however, you can approach this book with an open mind, and a light heart, you may gain a different perspective about 911 dispatchers then you had before. Of course, the bulk of calls coming in were true emergencies that would not be appropriate for this book. I chose mostly, the light hearted calls that would make you come away from the book with a smile, instead of a heavy heart. The Dark Side Chapter is the only chapter in this book with samples of the more serious, violent type of calls we get on a daily basis. Many of you may be amazed by the sub culture out there, and how they live on a day to day basis. Many of these calls may shock you, and have you scratching your head thinking....OMG really?!! I took my job very seriously, and would never willingly jeopardize the confidentiality, or privacy of anybody who asked for my help. Therefore, I did not use real personal names or addresses from any callers in this book without their consent. Any names or a personal address used in this book that may sound familiar is pure coincidence. I hope you enjoy this book.

Book excerpt: 9-1-1 telecommunicators are heavily exposed to traumatic stressors in the line of duty as our nation's Very First Responders. They struggle with PTSD at a rate believed to be four to five times higher than the general public. These 9-1-1 Professionals and their leaders must be equipped to protect their own well-being, and to safeguard the performance of our 9-1-1 centers facing an ever more demanding future. The 911 Training Institute is proud to announce the release of a book that will finally meet this need: The Resilient 9-1-1 Professional: A Comprehensive Guide to Surviving & Thriving Together in the 9-1-1 Center. This volume, edited by Jim Marshall and Tracey Laorenza, brings together an unprecedented group including 9-1-1 frontliners, their managers, joined by subject matter experts in public-safety, mental health and public administration. Together they deliver powerful stories and fascinating science revealing the health risks faced by "9-1-1Pros" and a full spectrum of solutions to manage these risks and optimize the personal and organizational well-being in our 9-1-1 centers. This book stands alone in the 9-1-1 industry and serves as essential training for all front-line dispatchers, supervisors, and managers/directors. It is also imperative reading for all those who influence and benefit from 9-1-1 emergency services: field responders, government officials, mental health professionals; all organizations that aid public-safety agencies; and, all those family and friends who love a dispatcher. Dispatchers face very high stakes every day. Our investment as a nation of 9-1-1 stakeholders in supporting and empowering them must be equally as high.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of 911 is complicated. Over 240 million calls are made to the 911 system every year. The Romans organized fire watches and had published laws. The famous Magna Carta was the foundation of our modern democratic freedom. Folks who were used to being self-sufficient learned to take advantage to developing technology to call for assistance when they saw a fire, needed law enforcement or required emergency medical help. Phone calls are received by local police departments and handled by Public Safety Telecommunicators, or Dispatchers. How did the 911 system begin? How are the 911 Dispatchers selected and trained? How do they handle everyday calls verses disasters or major incidents? This is the first book to address the story of our Nation's Public Safety Dispatchers.

Book excerpt: The stress that comes with being a first responder has been known to lead to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. However, few clinicians are informed about these health concerns and how to adequately treat them in this population. Therefore, there is an urgent need for practitioners to understand the latest information regarding treatments that will be useful to this specific population. Mental Health Intervention and Treatment of First Responders and Emergency Workers is an essential reference source that focuses on the latest research for diagnosing and treating mental health issues experienced by emergency personnel and seeks to generate awareness and inform clinicians about the unique circumstances encountered by these professionals. While highlighting topics including anxiety disorders and stress management, this book is ideally designed for clinicians, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, practitioners, medical professionals, EMTs, law enforcement, fire departments, military, academicians, researchers, policymakers, and students seeking current research on psychological therapy methods regarding first responders.

Book excerpt: This book is a must read for anyone who might have to call 911 for help someday. You may believe that reporting an emergency is as simple as dialing 911, telling the dispatcher what the emergency is and where it is occurring, and then help will be sent without delay. The good news is, it does work that way most of the time; the bad news is, it doesn't always work that way. When there is miscommunication on the part of the caller, the dispatcher, or both, dire consequences can, and do, occur. This book will explain the important role the caller plays in relaying vital information to a dispatcher. This is explained through many practical and realistic examples, showing important "do's" and "don'ts". The reader will understand the best way to provide the dispatcher with the specific details of the emergency. You will also learn how to relay sensitive and relevant information that could make a big difference in the outcome of a call; everything from the quick apprehension of a suspect, to preventing further trauma to a victim, to increasing the safety of the officers. This book was written by a dispatcher with over 25 years of experience handling 911 calls. The goal of the book was to help the reader become more familiar with the 911 call taking process. You will learn what questions the dispatcher will ask, and why, and what you can do to ensure your call is quickly and properly prioritized. You will learn the best way to provide suspect, vehicle and weapon descriptions, and how to overcome some of the barriers in the communication process. There is also vital information everyone should know about the limitations of using a cell phone to call 911 during an emergency. Don't be caught off guard by the mistaken notion that the dispatcher will know exactly where you are calling from if you can't stay on the line for some reason, as this is not always the case. Reading this book well in advance of having to call 911 is the best way you can be prepared during an actual emergency situation.
