En route, he began having strange and disturbing dreams. It was Swedenborg's custom to keep a diary while he traveled, and so he recorded his dreams in its pages. These visions began the process of Swedenborg's spiritual awakening, which culminated in visions of angels, demons, heaven and hell. Swedenborg would largely abandon scientific pursuits and instead devote himself to recording the mystical visions that would dominate his legacy. The whereabouts of this journal were unknown for decades after Swedenborg's death, but it was eventually discovered in the Royal Library in the 1850s and subsequently published.

Book excerpt: Who at this day can believe that the delight of adultery is hell in man, and that the delight of marriage is heaven in him, consequently so far as he is in the one delight he is not in the other, since so far as man is in hell he is not in heaven?-from "VI: The Sixth Commandment"Emanuel Swedenborg, an 18th-century inventor and man of science, experienced a spiritual epiphany at the age of 56, when he began to explore Christianity from a mystic standpoint, a stunning change of heart that has since intrigued and fascinated generations of rationalists and philosophers, from Immanuel Kant to Arthur Conan Doyle to C.G. Jung. Did Swedenborg go mad, or is he a genuine prophet? In this work, an extract from Swedenborg's 1757 Apocalypse Explained, he explores the meaning of each of the 10 commandments and discusses good, truth, and what it means to live a righteous life.Swedish scientist and philosopher EMANUEL SWEDENBORG (1688-1772) made notable contributions in the fields of biology, geology, and astronomy before embarking upon his Scriptural commentary. His religious writings include The Divine Love and Wisdom, The Apocalypse Revealed, The True Christian Religion, and The Last Judgment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighth volume in Swedenborg's monumental study of the Bible, its meaning, and themes. Secrets of Heaven is Emanuel Swedenborg's magnum opus, a fifteen-volume work that delves into the inner, spiritual meaning of the Bible. Starting from the first verse, Swedenborg goes through Genesis and Exodus verse by verse, sometimes word by word, uncovering the fascinating teachings behind the literal account. By engaging in a careful comparison of passages and tracing individual images and motifs through the Bible, he demonstrates that it contains a profound, coherent, and unified inner meaning. In this eighth volume, covering Genesis 41-44, the explication of the deeper meaning behind Joseph's story continues. Joseph's rise to power in Egypt and the aid he gives his brothers during the famine are presented by Swedenborg as symbolizing the strengthening of Jesus' inner self and the benefit it provided to his outer self during his process of transformation to divine humanity. Swedenborg also completes his survey of the correspondence of the human body with some attention to the correspondence of disease. He then begins a new theme in which he describes the influence that the spiritual world has on human beings through angels and spirits. This new translation, part of the New Century Edition series, makes Swedenborg's insights into Scripture and his accounts of his spiritual experiences more accessible than ever before.

Book excerpt: The sixth volume of Swedenborg's monumental exploration of the Bible, its themes, and meaning. By engaging in a careful comparison of passages and tracing individual images and motifs through the Bible, he shows that it contains a profound, coherent, and unified inner meaning. This sixth volume interprets the inner narrative of Genesis 31-35, in which Jacob leaves Laban's house, wrestles with God, and reunites with Esau. These acts, Swedenborg argues, are each symbolic of the inner separations, struggles, and unifications that Jesus accomplished on his path to divinity. Swedenborg continues to explore two themes found in previous volumes: the Last Judgment as the ending of an old church and the beginning of a new church, and the correlation between human individuals and the "universal human." This new translation, part of the New Century Edition series, makes Swedenborg's insights into Scripture and his accounts of his spiritual experiences more accessible than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Heaven and Hell,' Swedenborg gives the reader a detailed description of the afterlife. He deals with God, heaven, hell, angels, spirits, and devils; and he addresses the issues of who is in heaven and hell. Are there any Jews, Muslims, and people of pre-Christian times such as pagan Romans and Greeks in heaven? He posits that the love of self or of the world drives one towards hell, and love of God and fellow men towards heaven. Here is the most influential and important book ever written on the subject! In 'Divine Love and Wisdom,' Swedenborg uses reason and empirical facts to prove the existence of God and God's divine love. He further posits that we are all an essential part of God's Divine plan, and that without us God's plan could not come to fruition. In 'Divine Providence,' Swedenborg explains why it is that we cannot always see God's hand in our chaotic world. Why tragedy and war are allowed to happen and how these things relate to us. If God were to remove all tragedies from our lives, of what worth would free will be?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh volume of Swedenborg's monumental exploration of the Bible, its themes, and meaning. In this seventh volume, covering Genesis 36-40, Joseph's story begins. The literal narrative describes how after dreaming of greatness Joseph is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and wrongfully imprisoned. The inner narrative, Swedenborg explains, describes the trials and opposition endured by the Lord's divine humanity, which is represented by Joseph. In this volume Swedenborg also interprets a number of parables in Matthew, relating their meaning to the Lord's Second Coming. His exploration of the correspondences of the various parts and functions of the body is also continued from the previous volume. This new translation, part of the New Century Edition series, makes Swedenborg's insights into Scripture and his accounts of his spiritual experiences more accessible than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swedenborg experienced dreams and visions in which he was appointed by the Lord to write a heavenly doctrine to reform Christianity. He claimed that the Lord had opened his eyes, so that he could freely visit heaven and hell and talk with angels, demons, and other spirits. His best known book is 'Heaven and Hell.' The destruction of the world is not meant by the day of the last judgment. Those who have not known the spiritual sense of the Word, have understood that everything in the visible world will be destroyed in the day of the Last Judgment; for it is said, that heaven and earth are then to perish, and that God will create a New Heaven and a New Earth. Here are all three of his 'Last Judgment' books, 'Last Judgment,' 'Last Judgment Continued,' and 'Last Judgment Posthumous.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passage from the book...The Swedenborg Foundation has done handsomely by its eponymous visionary with this first volume in a new 25 part set of translations for his of his work. They have begun with a fine new translation of Emmanuel Swedenborg's most famous work, a description of the many heavens and hells that make up the great 18th-century thinker's cosmology, at once perfectly logical and perfectly eccentric. Swedenborg's afterworld is a kind of reflection and amplification of our own, and his vision of moving and active collective of heavens, occupied by the very real blessed dead, has been a tremendous influence on Goethe, Emerson, and Jorge Luis Borges, among many others. Dole's translation has the clarity and simplicity of Swedenborg's Latin, and the notes and supplementary material are wonderfully balanced and informative.
