This book explores in detail the principles designers employ when planning levels and building engaging spaces for the player. As well as practical approaches to level design, the book delves into the theoretical underpinnings of the processes and charts a path towards thinking like a Level Designer. Throughout the book you will be guided through the fundamentals of level design: each chapter builds on the types of research, ideation, best practices, and methodologies Level Designers employ when creating prototypes and shipped games. A series of interviews with designers and case studies from game studios examine the application of industry-wide expertise used to create triple-A and indie game titles. By the end of this book you will have gained valuable insight into the role of a Level Designer and be able to devise, plan, and build your own engaging and entertaining game levels.

This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reserved, for a long time, to a small circle of enthusiast developers, 3D is not yet commonly used by independent video games development studios (the Indies). It's for a good reason: the entrance ticket is relatively high. With Blender 2.76 (free and Open Source), you can model, animate, create a 3D rendering and have a game engine. It is a perfect tool for the beginner and for the one that wants to create a commercial game. Blender is also a complement to tools like Unity, CryEngine, Unreal Engine and other commercial engines. Thanks to the resources freely available to everybody on the Internet, you don't have to be graphic designer or programmer to create a game. You don't want to read 400 pages of theory about modeling, animating and programming in python? This book was written for you. You are invited to create directly several game projects: a platform game (like Super mario), a First-person Shooter (like Doom, Far Cry or Half-Life), a Third-person RPG (like Tomb Raider, GTA or Watch Dogs), a voxel sandbox game (like Minecraft), a car race and a flight simulator. With these projects, about a hundred recipes will help you to create any type of game. If you aren't an addict, it'll come to you sooner than you realize. It's more fun to create a game than to play with the last blockbuster. You'll be the architect of a new world, with its own rules. The only limits are the one of your imagination... High technology enthusiast, games addict and 3D geek, the author wants to honor these games that have revolutionized this domain.

Book excerpt: The story of a pioneering microcomputer: its beginnings as part of a national Computer Literary Project, its innovative hardware, and its creative uses. In 1982, the British Broadcasting Corporation launched its Computer Literacy Project, intended “to introduce interested adults to the world of computers and computing.” The BBC accompanied this initiative with television programs, courses, books, and software—an early experiment in multi-platform education. The BBC, along with Acorn Computers, also introduced the BBC Microcomputer, which would be at the forefront of the campaign. The BBC Micro was designed to meet the needs of users in homes and schools, to demystify computing, and to counter the general pessimism among the media in Britain about technology. In this book, Alison Gazzard looks at the BBC Micro, examining the early capabilities of multi-platform content generation and consumption and the multiple literacies this approach enabled—not only in programming and software creation, but also in accessing information across a range of media, and in “do-it-yourself” computing. She links many of these early developments to current new-media practices. Gazzard looks at games developed for the BBC Micro, including Granny's Garden, an educational game for primary schools, and Elite, the seminal space-trading game. She considers the shift in focus from hardware to peripherals, describing the Teletext Adapter as an early model for software distribution and the Domesday Project (which combined texts, video, and still photographs) as a hypermedia-like experience. Gazzard's account shows the BBC Micro not only as a vehicle for various literacies but also as a user-oriented machine that pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved in order to produce something completely new.
