Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary will present all currently accepted generic, specific, sub-specific and variety names of trees, excluding fossil and more recently extinct taxa, hybrids and cultivars. Only the indigenous trees of a continent, those wild species that were natural elements of the spontaneous forest vegetation before the arrival of Europeans or other colonizers, are included. Each generic entry includes the family to which it is assigned, the synonyms of the Latin name, and the English, French, Spanish, trade and other names. For the English and French names the standard name is listed first, followed by other available names with, in parentheses, the countries where they are used. Where appropriate, names in additional languages are also included. Each infrageneric (species, subspecies, variety) entry includes, in addition, the distribution, height, type of foliage, ecological characteristics and main uses of the tree when available. In this volume only taxa indigenous on the North American continent are included, considered in a geographical, not in a political sense. This means from Alaska and Greenland to Panama, including Caribbean, but excluding Hawaii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary includes more than 4,500 terms and is published jointly by CAB INTERNATIONAL and the Society of American Foresters. It replaces the 1971 Terminology of Forest Science, Technology, Practice, and Products edited by F.C. Ford-Robertson under the authorization of the Joint FAO/IUFRO Committee on Forest Bibliography and Terminology. Since 1971, there have been substantial changes in the forestry profession - from a focus on multiple use and sustained yield of forest products to a broader, more complex context of sustaining diverse forest uses and values. These changes have modified the use of existing terms, introduced new terms, and created the need for an up-to-date dictionary that permits consistent use of professional language. The dictionary was compiled with input from the SAF's Forest Science and Technology board and members of its 29 working groups. The publication was extensively reviewed by forestry experts, who endorsed the dictionary for its contribution to the forestry profession and usefulness to all those interested and involved in forestry. It will help students, professionals, and the public - all those interested in the science, management, and conservation of forests - communicate technically with precision, clarity, and consistency.

Book excerpt: This dictionary includes some 9200 terms, each with a definition and often and additional descriptive text in English, the terms being translated in French, German and Spanish. It is more complete than similar previously published dictionaries or glossaries, and contains all fields of soil science as well as some adjacent fields of other earth sciences, agriculture and engineering. Present concepts and definitions are detailed along with earlier concepts, not only for historical reasons but also for developing new ideas. Concepts, terms and definitions usual in literature of various countries are discussed and compared, to offer an appropriate exchange of ideas. Soil classifications and methodologies for soil investigation coming from a score of European, American and other countries and international organisations are presented, and correlations between names of soil taxa in different classifications are suggested. Readers active in all branches of soil science will find accessible answers to many of their questions, either directly referring to procedures used in the organisations where they work, or related to way of thinking in other countries. Readers active in other branches, but needing information on soils, will also find answers to this dictionary of great assistance to their research. * Over 9200 terms with definitions in English and translations in French, German, Spanish* Includes all fields of soil science and many connected sciences* All present-day terminology with inclusion of earlier, classical concepts and terms * Terminology in current USDA Soil Taxonomy, FAO World Reference Base or Soil Resources, and other documents from different countriesGranted the "N.Cernescu" award from the Romanian Academy on Agricultural and Forestry Sciences

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography is a system of highly developed sciences about the environment. Geographical science embracing the study of the Earth's physical phenomena, people and their economic activities has always been in need of an extensive terminology. Geographical terms are related to the terms of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, geology, etc.) and humanities (history, economics, sociology, etc.) since geography is based on these fundamental subjects. Geography includes a number of disciplines and subdivisions which appeared along with the development of the science In spite of being very different geographical disciplines have some common tools of investigation which is maps, comparative method of exploration, remote sensing, geoinformation systems. Today very well developed terminologies of all the specialist fields of geography and related subjects exist in the main world languages. However, they are not always well-correlated. Nowadays geographical terminology requires unification and international correlation more than ever before. Hence the idea of compiling a multilingual polydisciplinary dictionary. The Dictionary consists of the basic table of terms arranged according to the order of the English alphabet with each term numbered. Each entry consists of the term in English and its equivalents in Russian, French, German, Spanish. Short definitions of terms are given in English and in Russian. The terms are supplied with the necessary grammar labels, such as gender of nouns, plural number, etc. The Dictionary combines two functions: that of a defining dictionary and that of a bilingual dictionary. These two functions are basically contradictory because usually the defining dictionary is aimed at giving one meaning of the word which is the main and essential one, while the bilingual dictionary tries to give different equivalents of a given word in the other language in order to supply the user with maximum possible translations, differing in the shades of meanings, thus giving him the possibility to choose the appropriate word. But in our Dictionary we intentionally decided to combine the two functions – defining and multilingual, because a short definition of the term and equivalents in other languages help to achieve our main aim which consists in showing the basic geographical terminology and harmonizing it in several languages. Having this into consideration we deliberately mixed two types of dictionaries in one. Organized alphabetically via English Provides short definition of geographical terms in English and Russian Includes multilingual translation of terms from English to Russian, French, German, Spanish

It is intended for all those who have an interest in these animals, from the amateur hobbyist who may find himself faced with what can be a rather intimidating scientific term or technical expression, to the trained zoologist who may sometimes have doubts over the exact meaning of a particular term. It will, it is hoped, not only be a useful source of reference to all who are either actively or passively involved in some aspects of herpetology whether they be keepers, curators, breeders, researchers, teachers or students, but an interesting read as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of ecology there has been a surprising lack of adequate tools for making the abundant literature published in English linguistically available to the Spanish-speaking world, and vice versa. The present dictionary has been compiled in order to fill this gap. The intense cooperation of a professional translator and an ecologist has produced a work which combines thorough scientific treatment with pragmatical evaluation of needs. The user of this dictionary will find ample terminology on plant ecology and complementary sciences such as plant physiology, edaphology, biostatistics, environmental science, forestry, climatology, plant geography etc., both in English and in Spanish, with concise definitions or explanations, as well as corresponding or equivalent terms in the other language. This book is particularly valuable for investigators, teachers, students and translators of ecology, plant and environmental sciences, and useful for any person studying, defending or interested in the life conditions of land plants.
