Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing urban populations prompted major changes in graveyard location, design, and use During the Industrial Revolution people flocked to American cities. Overcrowding in these areas led to packed urban graveyards that were not only unsightly, but were also a source of public health fears. The solution was a revolutionary new type of American burial ground located in the countryside just beyond the city. This rural cemetery movement, which featured beautifully landscaped grounds and sculptural monuments, is documented by James R. Cothran and Erica Danylchak in Grave Landscapes: The Nineteenth-Century Rural Cemetery Movement. The movement began in Boston, where a group of reformers that included members of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society were grappling with the city's mounting burial crisis. Inspired by the naturalistic garden style and melancholy-infused commemorative landscapes that had emerged in Europe, the group established a burial ground outside of Boston on an expansive tract of undulating, wooded land and added meandering roadways, picturesque ponds, ornamental trees and shrubs, and consoling memorials. They named it Mount Auburn and officially dedicated it as a rural cemetery. This groundbreaking endeavor set a powerful precedent that prompted the creation of similarly landscaped rural cemeteries outside of growing cities first in the Northeast, then in the Midwest and South, and later in the West. These burial landscapes became a cultural phenomenon attracting not only mourners seeking solace, but also urbanites seeking relief from the frenetic confines of the city. Rural cemeteries predated America's public parks, and their popularity as picturesque retreats helped propel America's public parks movement. This beautifully illustrated volume features more than 150 historic photographs, stereographs, postcards, engravings, maps, and contemporary images that illuminate the inspiration for rural cemeteries, their physical evolution, and the nature of the landscapes they inspired. Extended profiles of twenty-four rural cemeteries reveal the cursive design features of this distinctive landscape type prior to the American Civil War and its evolution afterward. Grave Landscapes details rural cemetery design characteristics to facilitate their identification and preservation and places rural cemeteries into the broader context of American landscape design to encourage appreciation of their broader influence on the design of public spaces.

Book excerpt: This collection of original essays and commentary considers not merely how history has shaped the continuing struggle for racial equality, but also how backlash and resistance to racial reforms continue to dictate the state of race in America. Informed by a broad historical perspective, this book focuses primarily on the promise of Reconstruction, and the long demise of that promise. It traces the history of struggles for racial justice from the post US Civil War Reconstruction through the Jim Crow era, the Civil Rights and Voting Rights decades of the 1950s and 1960s to the present day.

Book excerpt: This innovative book examines how African Americans in the South made sense of the devastating loss of life unleashed by the Civil War and emancipation. During and after the war, African Americans died in vast numbers from battle, disease, and racial violence. While freedom was a momentous event for the formerly enslaved, it was also deadly. Through an investigation into how African Americans reacted to and coped with the passing away of loved ones and community members, Ashley Towle argues that freedpeople gave credence to their free status through their experiences with mortality. African Americans harnessed the power of death in a variety of arenas, including within the walls of national and private civilian cemeteries, in applications for widows’ pensions, in the pulpits of black churches, around séance tables, on the witness stand at congressional hearings, and in the columns of African American newspapers. In the process of mourning the demise of kith and kin, black people reconstituted their families, forged communal bonds, and staked claims to citizenship, civil rights, and racial justice from the federal government. In a society upended by civil war and emancipation, death was political.

Book excerpt: A cache of numerous letters, romantic poetry, and a diary recovered from the Wilson home place in Columbia, SC, informs the 19th-century story of George Mendenhall Chapin (nee Wilson). Adopted as a child into the Charleston home of Leonard Chapin, George struggled with his stern adoptive mother Sallie F. Chapin who led the Woman's Christian Temperance Union movement in the south. Through narrative and letters George & Son tells of his flight from home, his shipwreck at sea, and his eventual reunion with his biological siblings. Never truly successful, George marries and fathers "the Son" of the book's title. The story continues with this son, Thurston Adger Wilson, who accomplished all George would have aspired to-becoming a leading figure in the NC labor movement of the 1920s and 1930s and advocate for the workers of the state. A transcription of George's letters concludes the illustrated, annotated book.

Bravery in the face of insurmountable odds, doing what had never been done before. Tillman fortunately chronicled much of his early service time during WWII through photographs. The Soldiers captured in these photos recall the time before they experienced the terrible reality of the war. These are boys and men trying to make the best of the situation at hand. Many of these seventy-year-old photos of Soldiers have never been shared or seen by anyone other than immediate family. Many smiling faces, camaraderie, and bonds being formed that lasted lifetimes. Our family is proud to share this memoir and hope that it will be a blessing to all the other families whose husband, father, and grandfather is captured within.

Book excerpt: The following is a compilation of soldiers using service records, rolls found in papers, in the commanding officer’s papers, obituaries, and newspaper accounts. No one can actually get all as some records may be lost or destroyed, names may be different due to spelling, the use of a nickname, or the same name with conflicting information detailing with two or more persons with same name and records combined. Some records may and are of the same soldier with different companies. This is due to the fact that after the first year, soldiers were given the option to stay with the current company or leave and join another and the combining of soldiers toward the end of the war. Another reason will be soldiers being discharged early in the war and rejoining another company later on in the war.
