Book excerpt: Strengthening national immunization systems is an important goal in the WHO European Region as immunization saves lives. The WHO Regional Office for Europe launched a strategic plan in 2002 to eliminate measles and prevent congenital rubella infection, and in 2005 expanded it to include the elimination of rubella as well. This report indicates that, by the progress already made, these objectives are possible. It identifies key strategies and actions for countries to adopt, and indicators to use to measure progress, if they want to meet the targets by 2010.

Download or read book Surveillance Guidelines for Measles, Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome in the WHO European Region written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Regional Committee for Europe adopted the goal of eliminating indigenous measles transmission in 1998. In 2005, the Regional Committee expanded this commitment to include rubella and set a date for the elimination of both diseases by 2010. Although Member States did make progress, through the implementation of a strategic plan, the goal was not achieved. The WHO Regional Committee for Europe acknowledged at its sixtieth session (2010) that the regional goal of eliminating measles and rubella is achievable, and set a new target date of 2015. In the document Eliminating measles and rubella and preventing congenital rubella infection, WHO European Region strategic plan 2005-2010, key strategies are identified to meet the targets for interrupting transmission of indigenous measles and rubella and preventing congenital rubella infection. Strengthening surveillance systems by vigorous case investigation, including laboratory confirmation, is one of these key strategies. In line with the elimination goal, Surveillance guidelines for measles, rubella and congenitalrubella syndrome in the WHO European Region are intended to provide technical advice on the design and implementation of surveillance programmes. Surveillance indicators defined in these guidelines will be critical for assessing whether Member States have achieved the level of disease surveillance necessary for documenting elimination of indigenous measles and rubella transmission, and verifying that the Region's elimination objectives have been reached.

Book Synopsis Adverse Effects of Vaccines by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Adverse Effects of Vaccines written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1900, for every 1,000 babies born in the United States, 100 would die before their first birthday, often due to infectious diseases. Today, vaccines exist for many viral and bacterial diseases. The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, passed in 1986, was intended to bolster vaccine research and development through the federal coordination of vaccine initiatives and to provide relief to vaccine manufacturers facing financial burdens. The legislation also intended to address concerns about the safety of vaccines by instituting a compensation program, setting up a passive surveillance system for vaccine adverse events, and by providing information to consumers. A key component of the legislation required the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to collaborate with the Institute of Medicine to assess concerns about the safety of vaccines and potential adverse events, especially in children. Adverse Effects of Vaccines reviews the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence regarding adverse health events associated with specific vaccines covered by the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), including the varicella zoster vaccine, influenza vaccines, the hepatitis B vaccine, and the human papillomavirus vaccine, among others. For each possible adverse event, the report reviews peer-reviewed primary studies, summarizes their findings, and evaluates the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence. It finds that while no vaccine is 100 percent safe, very few adverse events are shown to be caused by vaccines. In addition, the evidence shows that vaccines do not cause several conditions. For example, the MMR vaccine is not associated with autism or childhood diabetes. Also, the DTaP vaccine is not associated with diabetes and the influenza vaccine given as a shot does not exacerbate asthma. Adverse Effects of Vaccines will be of special interest to the National Vaccine Program Office, the VICP, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vaccine safety researchers and manufacturers, parents, caregivers, and health professionals in the private and public sectors.
Book Synopsis Global Progress Toward Measles Eradication and Prevention of Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome by : Stephen L. Cochi
Download or read book Global Progress Toward Measles Eradication and Prevention of Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome written by Stephen L. Cochi and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this supplement, the papers have been organized under 6 topic headings. The first of these, 'Public Health Importance of Measles and Rubella, describes the global burden of disease due to measles and rubella and the tremendous impact on this disease burden during the vaccine era through the application of appropriate vaccination strategies, while noting the remaining unfinished agenda to complete the interruption of transmission of these diseases and their devastating effects. In the case of measles, documentation is provided of the major contribution of measles vaccination since 1990 toward reducing deaths among children aged 5 years worldwide. The next section, 'Feasibility of Measles Eradication, presents the results of various studies requested in 2008 by the Member States of the WHO to assess the feasibility of measles eradication. These studies include evaluation of the biological, technical, and operational feasibility of measles eradication; a comparative analysis of measles eradication with other previous and current eradication initiatives; issues related to availability of a sufficient global vaccine supply; and assessment of the impact of such an initiative on immunization services and health systems. The third section, 'Economic Studies, ' provides economic analyses at the country and global levels of the costeffectiveness and cost-benefit of measles eradication. These studies demonstrate that measles eradication is highly costeffective regardless of country income level, is cost-saving in those countries that have already eliminated measles, and compares favorably with almost any other investment in health. The fourth section, 'Measles Vaccine Safety and Effectiveness, ' reviews and highlights studies of the field effectiveness of measles-containing vaccines, persistence of measles antibodies following vaccination, the relative contributions of the first and second routine doses of measles vaccine and measles mass campaign doses to the observed public health impact of measles vaccination, the safety and immunogenicity of measles vaccination in human immunodeficiency virus-infected children, and progress toward improving injection safety in Africa catalyzed by the Measles Initiative. The fifth section, 'Regional and Country Experiences, ' offers a collection of country and regional reports on the epidemiology of measles and rubella, as well as articles about the progress towards achieving regional measles mortality reduction and elimination targets. The epidemiology of recent outbreaks of measles is described in detail. Issues regarding the programmatic and operational feasibility are addressed, and the successful experience and lessons learned in the Americas are highlighted. The final section of the supplement, 'Molecular Epidemiology and Laboratory Aspects of Measles and Rubella Surveillance, provides an overview of the expansion of the WHO Global Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network, with emphasis on advances in molecular epidemiology of measles and rubella, new testing procedures, and the challenges associated with laboratory testing in an elimination setting."--Page S2-S3.

Download or read book Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome Elimination in the Americas written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Surveillance for measles elimination clearly demonstrated the substantial disease burden of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in the Western Hemisphere. In this context, in 2003 the Member States of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) adopted the initiative to eliminate rubella and CRS from the Region by 2010. Once political commitment had been galvanized for rubella elimination, PAHO recommended that vaccination and surveillance strategies be executed with the primary aim of rapidly reducing the pool of susceptible individuals to rubella infection. This ultimately led to interruption of endemic transmission. The last endemic confirmed case of rubella in the Americas was reported in February 2009"--Page i.

Download or read book Immunization Safety Review written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-11-26 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Immunization Safety Review Committee was established by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to evaluate the evidence on possible causal associations between immunizations and certain adverse outcomes, and to then present conclusions and recommendations. The committee's mandate also includes assessing the broader societal significance of these immunization safety issues. While all the committee members share the view that immunization is generally beneficial, none of them has a vested interest in the specific immunization safety issues that come before the group. The committee reviews three immunization safety review topics each year, addressing each one at a time. In this fifth report in a series, the committee examines the hypothesis that exposure to polio vaccine contaminated with simian virus 40 (SV40), a virus that causes inapparent infection in some monkeys, can cause certain types of cancer.
