Book excerpt: The authors take the reader through the history of the concept, technical design and economic practicalities of building an elevator to space, and, ultimately, the implications of what such a low cost transportation system would mean to society. Based on three years of NASA-funded studies and written for the technically literate layperson, Edwards and Westling discuss the recent technological advances that now make the space elevator feasible. They conclude by addressing the effects that the space elevator could have on mankind's future from communications and energy to colonizing space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're returning to the Moon... using rockets. Yet setting up a space elevator on the Moon is easier than doing the same on Earth, thanks to the low gravity of the Moon. A ribbon doesn't need to orbit the Moon, unlike Earth. The pull of Earth's gravity means we can hang a ribbon "down" towards Earth, a ribbon that could stretch halfway to Earth. So, when will it happen? Will it be the USA that constructs it, or China? The concept of a Space Elevator started over a century ago but started to move from science fiction to reality in the 1990s with the promising advent of a super strong material, carbon nanotubes, that theoretically had the strength to build a ribbon into space.NASA started investigating the concept which led to the publication of the first detailed analysis of whether it was possible, written by Dr Brad Edwards, in a NIAC paper.Early excitement of an immediate breakthrough, maybe even constructing one by 2010, gave way to the reality of producing carbon nanotubes of the required strength, outside the laboratory, in commercial quantities. As I write, in 2020, we are still awaiting this breakthrough and the project has moved back to the late 20s, maybe the 2030s or 2040s.But it will happen, and when it does, it will replace rockets as the easier and cheaper way to leave Earth, opening up space travel the way airplanes opened up world travel. This series examines the technical aspects and how it will be deployed. In book five we set out the current plans for a return to the Moon, then look at how the use of a space elevator on the Moon changes the dynamics and makes Moon colonies a practical advance. The related book by Linda Phillips, "Back to the Moon", details the existing rocket based activity to return to the Moon and what will happen in the period prior to the deployment of a space elevator.

Book excerpt: "A towering epic to rank with Douglas Preston's Blasphemy and Michael Crichton's Prey... Pandemic drought, skyrocketing oil prices, dwindling energy supplies and wars of water scarcity threaten the planet. Only four people can prevent global chaos. Gary Morgan--a brilliant, renegade scientist is pilloried by the scientific community for his belief in a space elevator: a pillar to the sky, which he believes will make space flight fast, simple and affordable. Eva Morgan--a brilliant and beautiful scientist of Ukrainian descent, she has had a lifelong obsession to build a pillar to the sky, a vertiginous tower which would mine the power of the sun and supply humanity with cheap, limitless energy forever. Gunther Rothenberg--the ancient but revered rocket-scientist who labored at Peenemunda with von Braun to create the first rockets and continued on to build those of today. A legend, he has mentored Gary and Natalia for two decades, nurturing and encouraging their transcendent vision. Franklin Smith--the eccentric Silicon Valley billionaire who will champion their cause, wage war with Congress and government bureaucracy and most important, finance their herculean undertaking. This journey to the stars will not be easy--a tumultuous struggle filled with violence and heroism, love and death, spellbinding beauty and heartbreaking betrayal. The stakes could not be higher. Humanity's salvation will hang in the balance"--

Book excerpt: This book in our subseries called New Space Ventures discusses the advantages of building a lunar elevator and how it would afford access to some of the resources the Moon has to offer. We could potentially reduce poverty and improve Earth's environment using such a technology. Human civilization could more easily expand to Earth orbit or the Moon, and perhaps beyond. The book sets out the road map of how this could be achieved. The lunar elevator is a long tether anchored on the Moon, with the other end free and hanging towards Earth. Such a tether can now be built at a relatively low cost using commercially available materials such as Zylon, Dyneema or M5. This first generation lunar elevator will be able to deliver payloads to the lunar surface, each weighing 100 kg, and retrieve the same amount of material from the lunar surface. The alternative of using chemical rockets to soft land on the Moon [or return material] is prohibitively expensive. The critical shortage of helium-3, which sells for $1 million per ounce on the market, could be resolved by transporting it from the Moon with the elevator. The lunar elevator can also transport oxygen from the Moon to low Earth orbit, where it can refuel tugs to take satellites from LEO to GEO, a significant revenue source.

Book excerpt: Under the editorship of David Raitt, this timely book brings together for the first time the record of people, places, developments and activities, in fiction and in fact, of the space elevator - a 100,000 km long, meter wide, ribbon reaching up from the Earth and into space along which robotic climbers that will travel to bring payloads into orbit at a fraction of the price of rocket launches. The chapters in the book cover the early pioneers who dreamt up the concept initially some 120 years ago; the work of modern day scientists and engineers who have developed the concept into doable plans; how the concept has been portrayed in novels, films and art; the conferences at which interested people could present and discuss their work and ideas; the global community that has grown up around space elevators and the competition challenges that have been held; and what the future may hold.

Book excerpt: What is a space elevator? A space elevator is a physical connection from the surface of the Earth to a geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) above the Earth .35,786 km in altitude. Its center of mass is at the geostationary point such that it has a 24-hr orbit and stays over the same point above the equator as the Earth rotates on its axis. The vision is that a space elevator would be utilized as a transportation and utility system for moving people, payloads, power, and gases between the surface of the Earth and space. It makes the physical connection from Earth to space in the same way a bridge connects two cities across a body of water. The Earth to GEO space elevator is not feasible today, but could be an important concept for the future development of space in the latter part of the 21st century. It has the potential to provide mass transportation to space in the same way highways, railroads, power lines, and pipelines provide mass transportation across the Earth's surface. The low energy requirements for moving payloads up and down the elevator could make it possible to achieve cost to orbit

Book excerpt: STAY ALIVE ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON What happens when you get the one thing you wanted most in life? Lonely 16-year-old farm girl Barbara Winton has been following one reality show for years. Then in an instant she goes from fangirl to participant when the call comes from Dr. Keegan Bright: She’s been selected out of a horde of applicants to join him on the Moon. She’ll be one of his Bright Sparks, six students with expertise in STEM and plenty of their own ingenuity chosen to work with Dr. Bright and given big responsibilities to undertake new projects important to the growth of the colony. Her first task? Build a radar telescope using an entire crater on the far side of the Moon. But Barbara soon learns that life on a burgeoning frontier outpost like the Moon is a far cry from safe, civilized Earth. The loner from farm country must find a way to weld a functional team out of fiercely independent thinkers. Not only are they a bit trickier to work with than farm robots, not only is the working environment incredibly dangerous—she also has to perform this miracle in front of millions of fans. . . .
