Download or read book Elephant Summer written by Douglas Jackson Channell and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-07-11 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elephant Summer is a contemporary look at an age-old problem (Elephant Conservation) through the eyes of three best friends from GeorgeAnn, Texas. Taylor Jackson, Jackie Cooper and Smiley O'Dell visit an uncle in Kenya for the summer and become interested in the elephants in the Amboseli region, and intimately involved with one particular elephant family led by an old matriarch they call Sweety Pie. "We had left our small town of GeorgeAnn, Texas, to spend the summer with my Uncle Keeno in the jungles of Kenya. As an archeologist, it was his job to explore the region for clues of pre-historic man. For Jackie, Smiley, and me, it was just supposed to be a lot of fun. Now we were running for our lives, our legs pumping up and down like pistons, my heart pounding in my chest like cannon-fire." The three friends join two elephant researchers on their day to day sojourns into the bush and across the savannas to learn all they can about the elephants they are falling in love with...and their complicated and endless array of problems. Authors' Note: Culling has been a means of elephant population control in various areas of Africa for over fifty years. However, Kenya has recently stopped the practice of culling and currently prohibits culling as a means of elephant population management. Nevertheless, the act of culling as a manner of elephant population control is still practiced within other countries of the African continent. Hopefully, other countries in Africa will soon follow Kenya's lead and prohibit culling as a means of wildlife management, within their own boundaries as well.

Download or read book Shahnama written by Robert Hillenbrand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shahnama: The Visual Language of the Persian Book of Kings presents the first comprehensive examination of the interplay between text and image in the celebrated Persian national epic, the Shahnama, written by the poet Firdausi of Tus. The Shahnama is one of the longest poems ever composed and recounts the history of Iran from the dawn of time to the Muslim Arab conquests of the seventh century AD. There is no Persian text, in prose or poetry, which has been so frequently and lavishly illustrated. Offering fresh insights through a range of varied art-historical approaches to the Shahnama, the essays in this volume reveal how the subtle alterations in text and image serve to document changes in taste and style and can be understood as reflections of the changing role of the national epic in the imagination of Iranians and the equally changing messages - often political in nature - which the familiar stories were made to convey over the centuries.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Secret Elephants by : Gareth Patterson
Download or read book Beyond the Secret Elephants written by Gareth Patterson and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Secret Elephants is Gareth Patterson's long-awaited sequel to The Secret Elephants, published in 2009. Beyond the Secret Elephants is the continuing story of Gareth Patterson's almost two decades of research into the secretive Knysna elephants. Significantly, however, it also reveals his startling discovery of a much more mysterious being than the elephants – a relict hominoid known to the indigenous forest people as the Otang. Gareth had long heard about the existence of the otang from the local people but he mentioned it only briefly in The Secret Elephants, focusing instead on his rediscovery of the Knysna elephants and their survival against the odds. He was reluctant to blur the story of the elephants with his findings about the otang. That is, until now. The possible existence of relict hominoids is today gaining momentum worldwide with ongoing research into Bigfoot in North America, the Yeti in the Himalayas and the Orang Pendek in Sumatra. Eminent conservationists and scientists – among them Dr Jane Goodall, Dr George Schaller and Professor Jeff Meldrum – have publicly stated that they are open-minded about the possible existence of these cryptid beings. In the course of his unannounced research into the otang Gareth heard many accounts – mostly spontaneous and unprompted – of otang sightings by others in the area over a number of years. These accounts, documented in the book, are astonishingly consistent both in the descriptions of the otang and in the shocked reactions of the individuals who saw them. Gareth Patterson's work supports the increasing realisation that humankind still has much to learn about the natural world and the mysteries it holds. The possibility that we may be sharing our world with other as yet unidentified hominoids is today being viewed as something that should not be discounted. And as humankind, we need to reassess our role and our responsibility towards all forms of life that coexist with us on planet Earth. ... following in the erudite footsteps of the late Lyall Watson ... by exploring beyond the fringe of 'fringe science' ... - Ian Redmond OBE
