Book Synopsis Léon Walras: Elements of Theoretical Economics by : Léon Walras
Download or read book Léon Walras: Elements of Theoretical Economics written by Léon Walras and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his fourth edition of Éléménts d'économie politique pure (1900), León Walras introduced the device of written pledges to eliminate path dependency: sellers of products and services write out commitments to supply certain quantities at suggested prices with no commodities actually produced and supplied until a set of prices is found at which supply and demand are equal simultaneously in every market. This brought about very serious alterations to the character of the book. Unfortunately, these changes resulted in an incomplete, internally contradictory, and occasionally incoherent text. This translation, therefore, by two leading scholars of León Walras' work, Donald A. Walker and Jan van Daal, revisits the third edition of this seminal work, including Walras' brilliant explanation of his comprehensive model, with all its richness derived from reality. Growing research into Walras' work indicates that it was this third edition that contained his best theoretical research and a translation of this edition of the book is now a necessity.

Book Synopsis A Proof Theory for Description Logics by : Alexandre Rademaker
Download or read book A Proof Theory for Description Logics written by Alexandre Rademaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description Logics (DLs) is a family of formalisms used to represent knowledge of a domain. They are equipped with a formal logic-based semantics. Knowledge representation systems based on description logics provide various inference capabilities that deduce implicit knowledge from the explicitly represented knowledge. A Proof Theory for Description Logics introduces Sequent Calculi and Natural Deduction for some DLs (ALC, ALCQ). Cut-elimination and Normalization are proved for the calculi. The author argues that such systems can improve the extraction of computational content from DLs proofs for explanation purposes.

Book Synopsis Language Description Informed by Theory by : Rob Pensalfini
Download or read book Language Description Informed by Theory written by Rob Pensalfini and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how linguistic theories inform the ways in which languages are described. Theories, as representations of linguistic categories, guide the field linguist to look for various phenomena without presupposing their necessary existence and provide the tools to account for various sets of data across different languages. A goal of linguistic description is to represent the full range of language structures for any given language. The chapters in this book cover various sub-disciplines of linguistics including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition, and anthropological linguistics, drawing upon theoretical approaches such as prosodic Phonology, Enhancement theory, Distributed Morphology, Minimalist syntax, Lexical Functional Grammar, and Kinship theory. The languages described in this book include Australian languages (Pama-Nyungan and non-Pama-Nyungan), Romance languages as well as English. This volume will be of interest to researchers in both descriptive and theoretical linguistics.
Book Synopsis Understanding and Evaluating Research by : Sue L. T. McGregor
Download or read book Understanding and Evaluating Research written by Sue L. T. McGregor and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and Evaluating Research: A Critical Guide shows students how to be critical consumers of research and to appreciate the power of methodology as it shapes the research question, the use of theory in the study, the methods used, and how the outcomes are reported. The book starts with what it means to be a critical and uncritical reader of research, followed by a detailed chapter on methodology, and then proceeds to a discussion of each component of a research article as it is informed by the methodology. The book encourages readers to select an article from their discipline, learning along the way how to assess each component of the article and come to a judgment of its rigor or quality as a scholarly report.

Book Synopsis Many-body Theory Exposed! Propagator Description Of Quantum Mechanics In Many-body Systems (2nd Edition) by : Willem Hendrik Dickhoff
Download or read book Many-body Theory Exposed! Propagator Description Of Quantum Mechanics In Many-body Systems (2nd Edition) written by Willem Hendrik Dickhoff and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-05-02 with total page 851 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive textbook on the quantum mechanics of identical particles includes a wealth of valuable experimental data, in particular recent results from direct knockout reactions directly related to the single-particle propagator in many-body theory. The comparison with data is incorporated from the start, making the abstract concept of propagators vivid and accessible. Results of numerical calculations using propagators or Green's functions are also presented. The material has been thoroughly tested in the classroom and the introductory chapters provide a seamless connection with a one-year graduate course in quantum mechanics. While the majority of books on many-body theory deal with the subject from the viewpoint of condensed matter physics, this book emphasizes finite systems as well and should be of considerable interest to researchers in nuclear, atomic, and molecular physics. A unified treatment of many different many-body systems is presented using the approach of self-consistent Green's functions. The second edition contains an extensive presentation of finite temperature propagators and covers the technique to extract the self-energy from experimental data as developed in the dispersive optical model. The coverage proceeds systematically from elementary concepts, such as second quantization and mean-field properties, to a more advanced but self-contained presentation of the physics of atoms, molecules, nuclei, nuclear and neutron matter, electron gas, quantum liquids, atomic Bose-Einstein and fermion condensates, and pairing correlations in finite and infinite systems, including finite temperature.

Book Synopsis The The Theoretical-Practical Elements of Music, Parts III and IV by : Francesco Galeazzi
Download or read book The The Theoretical-Practical Elements of Music, Parts III and IV written by Francesco Galeazzi and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A virtuoso violinist, conductor, composer, and a professor of mathematics and botany, Francesco Galeazzi (1758–1819) firmly believed that musical education should be clear, demonstrable, and practical. In 1791 and 1796, he published the two volumes of his Elementi teorico-practici di musica, a treatise that demonstrated both his thorough grounding in the work of earlier theorists and his own approach to musical study. The first volume gave precise instructions on the violin and how to play it; the second demonstrated his command of other instruments and genres and provided comprehensive introductions to music theory, music history, and music aesthetics. The treatise also addresses the nature of compositional process and eighteenth-century concerns about natural and acquired talent and creativity. This volume offers an unprecedented English translation of the second volume of Elementi teorico-practici di musica, with annotations and commentary. The translation is introduced with a study of Galeazzi's life and milieu, the genesis and sources for the Elementi, and its reception through the present day.
