Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Spirituality, or the Spiritual Man This little book is a plea for a unified life. It endeavors to analyze, to be sure, but only that some conception of the wholeness of the spiritual life may be seen back of its multiplicity of ex periences. The sermons were preached to that caravan of hearers Which passes, on successive Sunday mornings, before the vision of a preacher in a great city. To teach a comprehensive doctrine under such circumstances is not easy. The demand is for some suggestive allusion, some illuminating phrase, some interpreting principle, that can be caught by the hearer as he passes. Elaborately reasoned truth does not ourish under such condi tions. In submitting the sermons to print the author calls attention to thes, e conditjons, 'hoping they will induce the reader} to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than seventy years, The Spiritual Man, Watchman Nee's classic on spiritual growth, has helped believers advance in their pursuit of gaining Christ by showing them the way to let the Lord fully gain them. According to Nee, "The most frustrating experience of believers today is that in seeking for progress in the spiritual path, they do not find the proper way. As a result, they grope in darkness, being at times high or low, lingering around the crossroads year in and year out, and having no one to consult for direction. The author of this book was such a one. For this reason, the book emphasizes clear guidance on the proper path. Every chapter of this book is for the purpose of directing the believers on the right course. Therefore, all those who seek after God with an honest heart can go step by step accordingly. Almost every chapter begins from the position of the sinner and goes on step by step toward the peak of spiritual life." This electronic book is the second of the three volumes of The Spiritual Man.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Mysticism and Other Essays So we are forced to ask ourselves, what is the essential element in spiritual experience? Which of the many states and revelations described by the mystics are integral parts of it; and what do these states and degrees come to, when we describe them In the current phraseology and strip off the monastic robes in which they are usually dressed? What elements are due to the suggestions of tradition, to conscious or unconscious symbolism, to the misinterpretation of emotion, to the invasion of cravings from the lower centres, or the disguised fulfilment of an unconscious wish? And when all these channels of illusion have been blocked, what is left? This will be a difficult and Often a painful enquiry. But it is an enquiry which ought to be faced by all who believe in the validity of man's spiritual experience; in order that their faith may be established on a firm basis, and disentangled from those unreal and impermanent elements which are certainly destined to destruction, and with which it is at present too often confused. I am sure that at the present moment we serve best the highest interests of the soul by subjecting the whole mass of material which is called mysti cism to an inexorable criticism. Only by inflicting the faithful wounds of a friend can we save the science of the inner life from mutilation at the hands of the psychologists. Book excerpt: Believers today very much lack knowledge as to the existence and operation of the human spirit. Many are unaware that in addition to their mind, emotion and will they also have a spirit. Even when they have heard of the spirit, many Christians either consider their mind, emotion or will as the spirit or else plainly confess they know not where their spirit is. Such ignorance enormously affects cooperation with God, control over self, and war against Satan, the performance of which in all cases requires the operation of the spirit. It is imperative that believers recognize a spirit exists within them, something extra to thought, knowledge and imagination of the mind, something beyond affection, sensation and pleasure of the emotion, something additional to desire, decision and action of the will. This component is far more profound than these faculties. God's people not only must know they possess a spirit; they also must understand how this organ operates -its sensitivity, its work, its power, its laws.

Excerpt: ... 50 THE UNLIKELINESS OF THE THE BIRTH AND MISSION OF THE CHRIST. And when the Messiah was born, the same unlikely condition was perpetuated. Let us turn and view the birth of Christ from the orthodox Christian standpoint. Let us dwell a moment on that astounding mystery, the cardinal dogma of orthodox Churches, the union of God with man in the person of Jesus Christ. Majesty and meanness seem everywhere combined in the history of the Son of God. In the eternal counsels of the All-wise it is decreed--so we are taught--that the Son of God should be born into this world to save it from the doom of sin. The King of heaven is to descend to earth and to become a Son of Man. Who then shall be his mother? On whom among the great ones of the earth shall this chiefest honour be conferred? On none: but upon a lowly virgin espoused to a carpenter unknown and unhonoured among the world's nobility. In what city and in which of the royal palaces shall His infant form be cradled? In none: but in the corner of an empty manger of a wayside inn the Lord of Life was born. The angel hosts of heaven receive the Divine commands to herald this mighty miracle--God manifest in the flesh. To whom, then, among the kings of the earth are they commissioned to bear their message? To none: but to simple shepherds as they watch their flocks beneath the midnight sky, following their simple avocations. Kings of the East and wise men, led by the Star of Bethlehem, came to worship and offer costly oblations to the new born King, but they made their BIRTH AND LIFE OF THE CHRIST. 51 offering in a stable. So it was throughout all His life: majesty and meanness are throughout combined. As for instance when His word of power spoke peace to the diseased soul and devils trembled at...

It has been repeatedly asserted that I reject the Incarnation or the Divinity of Christ. This is false.viii evolution OF man and christianity. I accept the Catholic doctrine of the Incarnation as set forth in our Second Article of Religion. As more fully explained in the chapter on Miracles, the birth and char acter of our Lord are two distinct questions, and one may accept His divinity even if he believe that He had an earthly father - Joseph. Further: One may believe Ilis birth to have been truly miraculous - that is, the result of a special operation of the Divine Will - and yet hold that this birth occurred along the lines of natural generation. In other words, the divinity of Christ depends upon the essential relation of the hu man and divine spiritual elements in Him, not upon the mode of His birth. He may have been born in the ordinary way, while His (human) spirit was specially begotten of God the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life, working through the media of a man and woman. At any rate, I believe that in Christ dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (col., ii, which influx of Deity into Humanity was due to a special operation of God's Will acting along the line of ordinary generation. It has also been asserted that I reject the resurrection of Christ. I do attach little importance to the details of His bodily resurrection as given in the Gospels, because I consider these documents of too uncertain authorship to allow of attaching much importance to their details but I accept the resurrection or manifestation of Christ after death in a spiritual body, as spoken of by St. Paul in First Corinthians, xv; and this is the doctrine of the Episcopal Church, as set forth in her burial service. Book excerpt: "For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discover the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Heb. 4:12). The peril of the believer is to confuse the spirit for the soul and the soul for the spirit, and so be deceived into accepting the counterfeit of evil spirits to the unsettling of God's work. The greatest advantage in knowing the difference between spirit and soul is perceiving the latent power of the soul and in understanding its falsification of the power of the Holy Spirit. Such knowledge is not theoretical but practical in helping people to walk in God's way. In this book, Watchman Nee shares his insight on The Latent Power of The Soul, The Christian and Psychic Force, and Spirit Force vs Psychic Force. Nowadays the atmosphere is so charged with the commotion of all kinds of counterfeit that the Lord seems to be calling the Church to come to a higher ground. Today's situation is perilous. May we "prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1Thes. 5:21)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Man: Or the Anthropology and Psychology of Scripture The aim is to present in one view the Bible Theology and Philosophy of Man and his Nature. What is claimed for this endeavour, in the specific department of Biblical Psychology, is to have called attention to the distinction which the Bible attributes to spirit, as the highest element in man's constitution, and on the possession of which is grounded its unique doctrine of man's likeness to his Maker. It also claims to be a consistent exposi tion of the relations of soul and spirit in man. Rejecting as unscriptural and unsupported by reason the notion which founds upon the Bible use of these terms a Tripartite Theory of man's nature, cause is yet shown why the neglect of that usage, as a meaningless parallelism, must yield to accurate exegesis and historic fact. These two discussions specially exemplify that which it is the object of the whole treatise to maintain, namely, that a study of the psychological ideas of Scrip ture throws valuable sidelights on its doctrinal teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been suggested that 'spirituality' has become a word that 'can define an era'. Why? Because paradoxically, alongside a decline in traditional religious affiliations, the growing interest in spirituality and the use of the word in a variety of contexts is a striking aspect of contemporary western cultures. Indeed, spirituality is sometimes contrasted attractively with religion, although this is problematic and implies that religion is essentially dogma, moralism, institutions, buildings, and hierarchies. The notion of spirituality expresses the fact that many people are driven by goals that concern more than material satisfaction. Broadly, it refers to the deepest values and sense of meaning by which people seek to live. Sometimes these values are conventionally religious. Sometimes they are associated with what is understood as 'the sacred' in a broader sense - that is, of ultimate rather than merely instrumental importance. This Very Short Introduction, written by one of the most eminent scholars and writers on spirituality, explores the historical foundations of the thought and considers how it came to have the significance it is developing today. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Excerpt: ...growth of this Omnipotent Fiend of Orthodox Theology. The results, not a little curious, are too long to find a place here; but it is not too much to say that the term is applied generically to everything which the writer wishes to brand with his disapproval. And as regards the actual Personal Devil, the epithets applied to him, and the work which he apparently performs, are most remarkable. He is the Accuser of his brethren (Eev. xii. 10), the Angel of the Bottomless Pit (Rev. ix. 11), The Adversary (1 Peter v. 8), The Dragon (John xxvii. 1; Rev. xx. 2), The Enemy (Matt. xiii. 39), The Evil Spirit (1 Sam. xvi. 14), The Lying Spirit (1 Kings xxii. 22), The Old Serpent (Rev. xii. 9), The Father of Lies (John viii. 44), The Crooked Serpent (Isa. xxvii. 1), The Unclean Spirit (Matt. xii. 43), The Great Red Dragon (Rev. xii. 3), The Power of Darkness (Col. i. 13), The Prince of the World (John xiv. 30), The Prince of Devils (Matt. xii. 24), Prince of the Power of the Air (Ephes. ii. 2), Ruler of the Darkness of this World (Ephes. vi. 12). This is a fair list of aliases, and it is by no means complete. He is also Apollyon (Rev. ix. 11), Beelzebub (Matt. xii. 24), Belial (2 Cor. vi. 15), Leviathan (Isa. xxvii. 1), Murderer (John viii. 44), Tempter (Matt. iv. 3), Liar (John viii. 44), and Satan (Job. i. 6). And yet the ghastly catalogue is not half written. The term Devil in Scripture is so variously applied, indeed, that one finds it hard to know what is really meant. For instance, a comparison of 2 Sam. xxiv. 1 v with 1 Chronicles xxi. 1 shows that the same act is attributed to God and to Satan. How is this? In Luke xiii. 16 the term Devil is applied to a disease; in John vi. 70, to a traitor; in Zech. iii. 1, to an adver sary; and in Mark...

But changing our outward behavior doesn’t change our hearts. Only by God’s grace can we be transformed internally. Renovation of the Heart lays a biblical foundation for understanding what best-selling author Dallas Willard calls the “transformation of the spirit”—a divine process that “brings every element in our being, working from inside out, into harmony with the will of God.” This fresh approach to spiritual growth explains the biblical reasons why Christians need to undergo change in six aspects of life: thought, feeling, will, body, social context, and soul. Willard also outlines a general pattern of transformation in each area, not as a sterile formula but as a practical process that you can follow without the guilt or perfectionism so many Christians wrestle with. Don’t settle for complacency. Accept the challenge Renovation of the Heart offers to become an intentional apprentice of Jesus Christ, changing daily as you walk with Him.

Book excerpt: Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621), a Jesuit as well as a leading theologian of the Counter-Reformation, had an enormous effect on the religious life of his age. Here are two of his most influential ascetical works: The Mind's Ascent to God, written in the tradition of Bonaventure and John Climacus, and The Art of Dying Well.
