Download or read book Probability Space written by Nancy Kress and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-01-05 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nancy Kress cemented her reputation in SF with the publication of her multiple-award–winning novella, “Beggars in Spain,” which became the basis for her extremely successful Beggars Trilogy (comprising Beggars in Spain, Beggars and Choosers, and Beggars Ride). And now she brings us Probability Space, the conclusion of the trilogy that began with Probability Moon and then Probability Sun, which is centered on the same world as Kress’s Nebula Award-winning novelette, “Flowers of Aulit Prison.” The Probability Trilogy has already been widely recognized as the next great work by this important SF writer. In Probability Space, humanity’s war with the alien Fallers continues, and it is a war we are losing. Our implacable foes ignore all attempts at communication, and they take no prisoners. Our only hope lies with an unlikely coalition: Major Lyle Kaufman, retired warrior; Marbet Grant, the Sensitive who’s involved with Kaufman; Amanda, a very confused fourteen-year-old girl; and Magdalena, one of the biggest power brokers in all of human space. As the action moves from Earth to Mars to the farthest reaches of known space, with civil unrest back home and alien war in deep space, four humans--armed with little more than an unproven theory--try to enter the Fallers’ home star system. It’s a desperate gamble, and the fate of the entire universe may hang in the balance.

Book Synopsis Radically Elementary Probability Theory. (AM-117), Volume 117 by : Edward Nelson
Download or read book Radically Elementary Probability Theory. (AM-117), Volume 117 written by Edward Nelson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using only the very elementary framework of finite probability spaces, this book treats a number of topics in the modern theory of stochastic processes. This is made possible by using a small amount of Abraham Robinson's nonstandard analysis and not attempting to convert the results into conventional form.
Book Synopsis Elementary Probability Theory by : Melvin Hausner
Download or read book Elementary Probability Theory written by Melvin Hausner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text contains ample material for a one term precalculus introduction to probability theory. lt can be used by itself as an elementary introduc tion to probability, or as the probability half of a one-year probability statistics course. Although the development of the subject is rigorous, experimental motivation is maintained throughout the text. Also, statistical and practical applications are given throughout. The core of the text consists of the unstarred sections, most of chapters 1-3 and 5-7. Included are finite probability spaces, com binatorics, set theory, independence and conditional probability, random variables, Chebyshev's theorem, the law of large numbers, the binomial distribution, the normal distribution and the normal approxi mation to the binomial distribution. The starred sections include limiting and infinite processes, a mathematical discussion of symmetry, and game theory. These sections are indicated with an*, and are optional and sometimes more difficult. I have, in most places throughout the text, given decimal equivalents to fractional answers. Thus, while the mathematician finds the answer p = 17/143 satisfactory, the scientist is best appeased by the decimal approximation p = 0.119. A decimal answer gives a ready way of find ing the correct order of magnitude and of comparing probabilities.
Book Synopsis Geometric Aspects of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics by : V.V. Buldygin
Download or read book Geometric Aspects of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics written by V.V. Buldygin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-08-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the usefulness of geometric methods in probability theory and mathematical statistics, and shows close relationships between these disciplines and convex analysis. Deep facts and statements from the theory of convex sets are discussed with their applications to various questions arising in probability theory, mathematical statistics, and the theory of stochastic processes. The book is essentially self-contained, and the presentation of material is thorough in detail. Audience: The topics considered in the book are accessible to a wide audience of mathematicians, and graduate and postgraduate students, whose interests lie in probability theory and convex geometry.
Book Synopsis Elements Of Applied Probability For Engineering, Mathematics And Systems Science by : David Mcdonald
Download or read book Elements Of Applied Probability For Engineering, Mathematics And Systems Science written by David Mcdonald and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2004-01-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been designed for senior engineering, mathematics and systems science students. In addition, the author has used the optional, advanced sections as the basis for graduate courses in quality control and queueing. It is assumed that the students have taken a first course in probability but that some need a review. Discrete models are emphasized and examples have been chosen from the areas of quality control and telecommunications. The book provides correct, modern mathematical methods and at the same time conveys the excitement of real applications.
