It is hoped that it will also prove of service to students of physics, as some knowledge of the subject is indispensable if the laboratory experiments are to be understood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Optics: Designed for the Use of Students in the University Art. 1. By Optics we understand that branch of Natural Philosophy which treats of the nature and properties of Light, and the Theory of Vision. 2. Modern Philosophers have made two hypotheses to explain the manner in which vision is produced by luminous objects. Des Cartes, Huygens and Euler, suppose that there is a subtile, elastic medium which penetrates all bodies, and fills all space; and that vibrations, excited in this fluid by the luminous body, are propagated thence to the eye, and produce the sensation of vision, in the same manner that the vibrations of the air, striking against the ear, produce the sensation of sound. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Methods of Geometrical Optics: Especially as Applied to the Theory of Optical Instruments Without entering more fully into the contents of the various chap ters, it may be stated that the work as a whole is designed as a general introduction to the special theory of optical instruments (telescope, microscope, photographic objective, etc., including also the eye itself). To discuss properly and fully each of these types would require a separate and extensive volume, which I may be induced to undertake at some future time as a sequel to the present Work. A complete system of notation which is free from objection is dif ficult to devise; and, in spite of the pains I have bestowed on the matter and the importance which I have attached to it, I do not doubt that fault will be found not only with the plan which I have adopted but with many of the characters which I have introduced. My object has been to make the work convenient as a book of reference, so that the meaning of a symbol and of the marks that distinguish it would be immediately obvious as far as possible; but in order to aid the reader still further in this respect, the principal uses of the letters in both the diagrams and the formulae are quite fully explained in an appendix at the end of the volume. In some instances the same letter or sign has been employed deliberately in two or more totally different senses, but only where there seemed to be no chance of confusion, and because also I have tried carefully to avoid resorting to strange and uncouth symbols which often make a mathematical work appear to be far more difficult and uncanny than it really is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Optics: For the Use of Schools and Colleges This little book is intended for those students whose knowledge of Mathematics is limited to an acquaintance with Elementary Geometry, the solution of Simple Algebraic Equations, and a few fundamental propositions in Trigonometry. It is therefore of a strictly elementary character. The numerous examples which illustrate the text have been, to a large extent, selected from University and College Examination Papers. The method of treatment is identical with that pursued in the text-books already written by the Author, in which his object has been to me the subject as attractive as possible to the student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Optics: Containing All the Requisite Propositions Carried to First Approximations; With the Construction of Optical Instruments, for the Use of Junior University Students In the present First Part of Geometrical Optics, the theory of optical instruments will be discussed, by taking the propositions to first approximations only; and in the Second Part the proposi tions will be discussed to second approximations, and the more corrected forms of some of the instruments treated of. This method involves the advantages of a more elementary treatise in the First Part, and a higher one in combining the two Parts.
