Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Correct Technique: Clinics From the New York School of Special Electro-Therapeutics After four years of teaching physicians how to acquire skill in Electro-Therapeutic technique my general missionary work in this field ends. Henceforward the teaching that I do will be confined to my personal methods of employing static electricity which take this great agent from out the rut of routine abuse and make it an instrument of scientific precision and of extraordinary utility. As a substitute for my clinical instruction this book is designed to furnish physicians a series of practical Home-Clinies and personal tests of current action which will transform the novice into an expert with reasonable study. Much original information is also added. This Manual is supplementary to my other books and covers other ground. It teaches the physician to explore electric currents at home. Much of the matter in these chapters is not in print elsewhere, and is not included in either clinical or correspondence instruction at present. Accurate selection, precise dose regulation, approved methods, the art of artistic technique, progressive efficiency and superior therapeutic results, are placed at the command of the careful student of this book. Book excerpt: VI SOCRATES: I think that we ought to stress that we will write only about things that we have first hand experience in, in a coherent way that will be useful to engineers and other scientists and stressing the formulation without being too mathematical. We should write with integrity and honesty, giving reference to other authors where reference is due, but avoiding mentioning everybody just to be certain that our book is widely advertised. Above all, the book should be clear and useful. PLATO: I think we should include a good discussion of fundamental ideas, of how integral equations are formed, pointing out that they are like two dimensional shadows of three dimensional objects, ... SOCRATES: Stop there! Remember you are not 'the' Plato! PLATO: Sorry, I was carried away. ARISTOTLE: I think that the book should have many applications so that the reader can learn by looking at them how to use the method. SOCRATES: I agree. But we should be careful. It is easy to include many illustra tions and examples in a book in order to disguise its meagre contents. All examples should be relevant. ARISTOTLE: And we should also include a full computer program to give the reader if so he wishes, a working experience of the technique.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypermedia authoring process has been vividly described in a special issue of the Economist as a combination of writing a book, a play, a film, and a radio or television show: A hypermedia document combines all these elements and adds some of its own. The author' s first job is to structure and explain all of the infor mation. The author then must distill the information into brief, descriptive nodes. Each node has to contain a Iist of the ingredients, and instructions on how the ingredients are mixed together to the greatest advantage. The structure of the material provided is translated into an architectural metaphor of some kind; much of the designer' s work is the creation of this imaginary space. Then, the designers must chart the details of what to animate, what to film, who to inter view, and how to arrange the information in the space tobe built [Eco95a]. This book presents guidelines, tools, and techniques for prospective authors such that they can design better hypermedia documents and applications. lt surveys the different techniques used to organize, search, and structure infor mation in a large information system. It then describes the algorithms used to locate, reorganize, and link data to enable navigation and retrieval. It Iooks in detail at the creation and presentation of certain types of visual information, namely algorithm animations. It introduces new mechanisms for editing audio and video data streams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sub-domain techniques in the BEM are nowadays finding its place in the toolbox of numerical modellers, especially when dealing with complex 3D problems. We see their main application in conjunction with the classical BEM approach, which is based on a single domain, when part of the domain needs to be solved using a single domain approach, the classical BEM, and part needs to be solved using a domain approach. This has usually been done in the past by coupling the BEM with the FEM, however, it is much more efficient to use a combination of the BEM and a BEM sub-domain technique. The advantage arises from the simplicity of coupling the single domain and multi-domain solutions, and from the fact that only one formulation needs to be developed, rather than two separate formulations based on different techniques. There are still possibilities for improving the BEM sub-domain techniques. However, considering the increased interest and research in this approach we believe that BEM sub-domain techniques will become a logical choice in the future substituting the FEM whenever an efficient solution requires coupling of the BEM with a domain technique.
