Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Animal Biology This book was made necessary by a radical change, several years ago, in the introductory course in zoology at the University of Michigan. When the dissection of animal types in the laboratory was replaced by exercises bearing on the larger questions and fundamental principles of biology, a textbook treating almost exclusively of the morphology of representatives of the phyla, classes and orders was obviously of small use. In the absence of any text which appeared to fit the new departure, a book was provided in temporary form by the organizers of the course. Until now the temporary volume has sufficed. Were a textbook based on principles useful only in a course whose laboratory exercises were also based on principles, the authors would not now feel impelled to make the volume available to others. They have accepted, however, the judgment of other biologists who find that even in courses in which types are dissected in the laboratory, the textbook should deal largely with biological principles, and with classification and the morphology of types only as these subjects fit themselves into the principles of the science as a whole. The best teachers have, in fact, long been presenting to their students much of the material of this book in lectures and recitations. In the hope that a textbook based on principles will be thought better than those now commonly in use, even for courses which retain the dissection of types in the laboratory, this volume is presented to the teachers of zoology and biology. It is believed, furthermore, that the general reader will find in its pages much that is of interest. Illustrations have been selected with a view to making the book intelligible, not only to college students, but to persons who are not pursuing laboratory work. The authors have made no attempt to write in popular style for the benefit of such readers, but have endeavored to make the exposition clear and in the main specific. They prefer to believe that the general reader is willing to labor for his acquisitions so long as his effort promises to yield commensurate results. Advice and criticism have been freely asked and given in the preparation of many of the chapters. The authors desire to mention in particular Professors H. H. Bartlett and J. F. Shepard, Dr. L.V. Heilbrunn, Dr. O. M. Cope, Dr. P. O. Okkelberg and Margaret B. Shull. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life, or Causes of Change in Animal Forms: A Study in Biology The great question of The Evolution of Life upon the earth, and the causes that have led to the successive changes in animal forms, is one that should be treated from an anatomical and a physiological point of view. Scientists have hitherto spoken of these changes that have taken place, and have concurred in the opinion that the lower forms of life have advanced in the scale of development, and in time have given rise to higher and newer forms. It is believed and generally accepted that the protoplasmic cell was the first vital organism that appeared upon the earth - that, following this in order came the protozoans, the fishes, the reptiles, the marsupials, the mammals, the higher apes, and finally man, but no attempt has ever been made, as far as I know, to explain the physiological causes of these changes in the anatomy of the animal kingdom. It is only a part of the truth to say that a reptile was evolved from a fish, a mammal from a reptile, and man from the higher apes. But this is not enough. The world is advancing to that point when it demands to know [1010 these changes took place, by what physi ological process they occurred, and what was the reason that induced them to change. It is this great point that I have endeavored to explain, - how far, and how well I have succeeded, I leave others to judge. If any thing is left unsaid or unexplained it may serve as a stimulus to future writers to finish the work I have planned out. I have written this work from a physi. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Individual in the Animal Kingdom Certain criticisms have convinced me that some explanation of the scope of this book will here not be out of place. The task I have attempted in the following pages is a two-fold one. First, I have tried to frame a general definition of the Individual, sufficiently objective to permit of its application by the man of science, while at the same time admitted as accurate (though perhaps regarded as incomplete) by the philosopher. Secondly, I have tried to show in what ways Individuality, as thus defined by me, manifests itself In the Animal Kingdom. I wish here to point out in general, that the failure of one of these aims does not preclude the success of the other; and, in particular, this - it is possible that the philosophically-minded will quarrel with my definition of the Individual (p. 28) as a continuing whole with inter-dependent parts (to put it at its baldest). But even if he denies that the definition applies to the Individual, he must, I think, admit that it does apply to something, and to something which plays a very important part in the organic world. He will, I believe, after reading the subsequent chapters, be brought to see that every living thing is in some way related to one of thesesystems, these continuing wholes; and that such wholes, though they may not in his eyes deserve the name of Individual, are yet sufficiently widespread and important to merit some title of their own. Put in other words, the major portion of this book is devoted to showing that living matter always tends to group itself into these closed, independent systems with harmonious parts. Though the closure is never complete, the independence never absolute, the harmony never perfect, yet systems and tendency alike have real existence. Such systems I personally believe can be identified with the Individuals treated of by the philosopher, and I have tried to establish this belief. But what's in a name? The systems are there whatever we may choose to call them, and if I have shown that, I shall be content. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Although old and largely scientifically out-dated, the information contained within these essays will be of considerable utility to those with an interest in the development of scientific thought, especially in relation to religion. Contents include: "Four Different Plans of Structure Among Animals", "Religion and Natural History", "Remote Antiquity of Animal Life as Shown in he Coral Reefs", "Physical History of the Earth.--Man the Ultimate Object", "Triple Coincidence in the Succession, Graduation, and Growth of Animals", and "Evidence of an Intelligent and Constantly Creative Mind in the Plans and Variations of Structure". Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secrets of Animal Life The authors are not prepared to Offer any solution of the problem of distant orientation in birds, but they have made a distinct step in proving that un trained birds can return successfully across the apparently trackless sea from a distance of 800 to 1000 miles. Dr. Lashley has Shown that for short distances on the island itself the terms adjust them selves to nest and mate and young on a basis largely of visual experience, helped a little by memory of movements, and sometimes by sounds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Animal Biology No reference is made in the text to the much discussed problems of sex hygiene. It was thought desirable to leave this topic to the discretion of the teacher to be handled in whatever way he or she considers to be most effective. An attempt, however, has been made to supply the students with a general basis of knowledge of the facts of reproduction and development so that a little added instruction of the right sort will aid them in avoiding the dangers and pitfalls into which ignorance is continually leading so many of our youth. Sex hygiene should be associated not merely with considerations of personal welfare, but with the welfare of future generations. It is highly important that the youth of to-day who are to be the parents of to-morrow should be imbued with a sense of their obligations as fathers and mothers of children. They need to be made aware that it is a matter of great moment what kind of people are supplying the larger part of our future population. And an effort has accordingly been made in the discussion of heredity and eugenics to prepare them for an appreciation of the importance of a knowledge of the forces that are working toward the improvement or the deterioration of the inborn qualities of the race. In the preparation of this book I have profited by the criticism of several of my colleagues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
