Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Qualitative Analysis: A Laboratory Guide Tms manual is offered as a laboratory guide for stu dents of qualitative analysis who have had a year's work in general chemistry. It is the outgrowth of several years' experience with students registered in the varied courses of a university curriculum. The aim in the prep aration of the book has been to systematize the work as much as possible, yet to avoid encouraging rule of thumb work in the laboratory. Our viewpoint has been to give a sufficient number of well-organized characteristic reactions accompanied by appropriate questions to stimulate and encourage analytical thinking. The attempt is made to bring out the value of differential behavior toward reagents early so that the student has at the commencement of his qualitative study an idea of the ultimate application of the reactions. We do not deem the study of the reactions used in the schemes followed in the systematic procedure for the analysis of unknowns sufficient to give the student a grasp of qualitative analysis. The use of analytical questions bearing on the reactions studied has an inesti mable value in the student's analytical training and greatly broadens his knowledge of the chemistry of the metals. Book excerpt: This book is written for college students and focuses on qualitative research. Reading about a problem may be good (a literature review), but learning how to investigate the problem yourself is better. Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to better understand the subject of study. All research involves theory, data collection, and attempts to solve a problem by answering a question. A quantitative research study indicates how variables are numerically related and may be used to determine the method of operandi and to make predictions based on confidence levels; however, a qualitative study indicates why variables are related and may be used to determine motives. In either case, by manipulating the independent variables, the dependent variables may be effectively managed. This book presents information on qualitative research and provides a comprehensive qualitative research study.

Book excerpt: Negotiating the Complexities of Qualitative Research in Higher Education illuminates the complex nature of qualitative research, while attending to issues of application. This text addresses the fundamentals of research through discussion of strategies, ethical issues, and challenges in higher education. In addition to walking through the methodological steps, this text considers the conceptual reasons behind qualitative research and explores how to conduct qualitative research that is rigorous, thoughtful, and theoretically coherent. Seasoned researchers Jones, Torres, and Arminio combine high-level theory with practical applications and examples, showing how research in higher education can produce improved learning outcomes for students, especially those who have been historically marginalized. This book will help students in higher education and Student Affairs graduate programs to cultivate an appreciation for the complexity and ambiguity of the research and the ways to think thorough questions and tensions that emerge in the process. New in This Edition: Updated citations and content throughout to reflect the newest thinking and scholarship Expansion of current exemplars of qualitative research New exercises, activities, and examples throughout to bolster accessibility of theory A new chapter on Theoretical Perspectives with attention to new perspectives increasingly used in higher education and Student Affairs A new chapter on Challenges in Data Collection

Book excerpt: New in paperback, the articles collected in Models of Qualitative Research examine the use of qualitative research in answering important research questions regarding music teaching and learning in a variety of diverse music education contexts. Each author examines key studies and provides suggestions for future questions that qualitative researchers may consider. Contexts examined in the chapter include: early childhood music, general music, instrumental music -winds, brass percussion, instrumental music-strings, choral music, preservice teacher education, teacher professional development, community music education, music for students with special needs, music education and issues of diversity, and world music. Models of Qualitative Research is the third of three paperback volumes derived from the original Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education, which outlines the history of qualitative research in music education and explores the contemporary use of qualitative approaches in examining issues related to music teaching and learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boost student success by reversing your perspective on college readiness The national conversation asking "Are students college-ready?" concentrates on numerous factors that are beyond higher education's control. Becoming a Student-Ready College flips the college readiness conversation to provide a new perspective on creating institutional value and facilitating student success. Instead of focusing on student preparedness for college (or lack thereof), this book asks the more pragmatic question of what are colleges and universities doing to prepare for the students who are entering their institutions? What must change in an institution's policies, practices, and culture in order to be student-ready? Clear and concise, this book is packed with insightful discussion and practical strategies for achieving your ambitious student success goals. These ideas for redesigning practices and policies provide more than food for thought—they offer a real-world framework for real institutional change. You'll learn: How educators can acknowledge their own biases and assumptions about underserved students in order to allow for change New ways to advance student learning and success How to develop and value student assets and social capital Strategies and approaches for creating a new student-focused culture of leadership at every level To truly become student-ready, educators must make difficult decisions, face the pressures of accountability, and address their preconceived notions about student success head-on. Becoming a Student-Ready College provides a reality check based on today's higher education environment.

Hunter-Lowe and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem addressed in the current study was that disruptive student behavior is detrimental to learning because quality teacher-student interaction time is reduced. The purpose of this ethnographic research study was to explore relationship between disruptive behavior of students and leadership styles of teachers, parents and school leaders. Results indicated that in some cases, an individualized approach could help the K-6 elementary student by reducing their disruptive behavior. However, it was also confirmed that as part of this individualized approach, school-wide implementation might provide the level of support needed to prevent future disruptive behavioral problems as well as providing the positive role models for students to observe and emulate.
