My experience as a teacher convinces me that qualitative analysis cannot be introduced with any hope of profit at an early stage of a course of practical chemistry. I have, therefore, placed a somewhat extended course of preparations, and of experiments on the reactions of some of the chief classes of inorganic compounds, before the section which deals with the elements of qualitative analysis. The directions for performing the various experiments are given in considerable detail; because I have always found that superficial directions lead to, and encourage, superficial slipshod work. Manipulation can only be learnt properly under personal instruction by a competent teacher, and more will be accomplished by letting the beginner see once for all how a thing is to be done than by whole volumes of printed directions.
