Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Text-Book of Physics: An Elementary Course in Natural Philosophy Designed for Use in High Schools and Academies Various changes in the arrangement of subjects have been accordingly made and the doctrine of energy, in an element ary form such as it must take in so elementary a work, will be found giving tone to all departments of the course. The first three chapters, treating of matter and motion, will abundantly prepare the student for the study of energy in the fourth; while, in the remaining chapters, he will be able to trace the exhibition of energy as seen in the phenomena of sound, heat, light, electricity, and machinery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Text-Book of Physics: An Elementary Course in Natural Philosophy Designed for Use in High Schools and Academies The Text-book of Natural Philosophy, first published in 1868, is now thoroughly revised; and an essentially New Text-Book of Physics is offered with the hope that it will prove to be still more worthy of the esteem of the friends of sound learning, and still more useful to the very large number of science-teachers who have so long employed the older book. That which chiefly distinguishes this New Text-Book is the prominence which it gives to the principle of energy. Physics has come to be universally regarded by scientists as "the science of matter and energy;" and I have felt, that, unless I could fairly present the principle of energy as the most vital element of the system, my work would be altogether out of harmony with the later views, and unworthy to be used in the education of the young, because it would fail to give the student any adequate idea of the present, state of the science. Various changes in the arrangement of subjects have been accordingly made; and the doctrine of energy, in an elementary form such as it must take in so elementary a work, will be found giving tone to all departments of the course. The first three chapters, treating of Matter and Motion, will abundantly prepare the student for the study of Energy in the fourth; while, in the remaining chapters, he will be able to trace the exhibition of energy as seen in the phenomena of sound, heat, light, electricity, and machinery. Book Synopsis General Physics by : William S. Franklin
Download or read book General Physics written by William S. Franklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Physics: An Elementary Treatise on Natural Philosophy The teaching of elementary physics in our colleges and tech nical schools has been growing more and more exacting for many years, and the ideal would seem to be an inescapable rigor, as in the teaching of mathematics, combined with a powerful imaginative stimulus such as can be realized only in the teaching of Natural Philosophy. We have prepared this elementary treatise on physics as a further step towards this ideal. A clear understanding of the two great generalizations of physics, namely, the Conservation of Energy and the Law of Entropy, would alone constitute a very considerable knowledge of Natural Philosophy, and we have therefore devoted a good deal of space to these things. See, particularly, Arts. 48, 80 - 81 and 103 - 111. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book General Physics written by William S. Franklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 614 pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Physics: An Elementary Treatise on Natural Philosophy The teaching of elementary physics in our colleges and technical schools has been growing more and more exacting for many years, and the ideal would seem to be an inescapable rigor, as in the teaching of mathematics, combined with a powerful imaginative stimulus such as can be realized only in the teaching of Natural Philosophy. 48, 80-81 and 103-111. A clear understanding of Natural Philosophy is very greatly promoted by developing the contrasts between the methods of Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Atomics (the Atomic Theory) and Statistical Physics. The difference between Mechanics and Thermodynamics is set forth sufficiently by the difference between Parts I and II; Thermodynamics and Atomics arc contrasted in Art. 79; Mechanics and Atomics are contrasted in Art. 227; and the student is referred to a very simple article on Statistical Physics in Science for August 4, 1916, pages 158-162. The Atomic theory is used but little in this text. We are sure that it would be a mistake to devote much space to the purely descriptive phases of the atomic theory in our treatment of heat; let the student go to Tyndall's book entitled Heat, A Mode of Motion. Likewise we believe that it would be incompatible with the main purpose of this text to devote much space to the purely descriptive phases of the atomic theory of electricity and magnetism.
