Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Ophthalmic Optics: Including Ophthalmoscopy Retinoscopy This book is intended to supply the student of ophthalmology with all the optics which is necessary for an intelligent knowledge of his subject. The proofs are in some cases a little confusing at first reading, but they never demand more than a very elementary acquaintance with mathematics. Even where a trigonometrical nomenclature has been inevitable the meaning of the signs is usually self-evident. Special care has been taken to emphasise all important propositions by italics, so that those who do not care to grapple with the proofs are provided with a readily accessible synopsis of results. A short bibliography of the best books upon the subject has been added, so that the advanced student may know where to look for further information. It is hoped that the book will prove a useful addendum to such practical works as Morton's Refraction of the Eye, Hartridge's Refraction, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Ophthalmic Optics The aim of this book is to set forth, in a clear and simple manner, those portions of Physical and Geometrical Optics which I consider essential to the medical student beginning his Ophthalmic studies. No one recognizes more fully than I do that the proper province of the ophthalmic surgeon is to treat diseases of the eye; but in order that he may do so with success it is necessary that he should have a competent knowledge of the organ of vision from a physical stand-point. It is hoped that this small manual will form a suitable and easy introduction to such knowledge. The subject of Physiological Optics is not discussed, since that branch of ophthalmic study is, as a rule, sufficiently explained in text-books dealing with diseases of the eye. My endeavour has been to give in one volume all the information necessary for the beginner, and therefore I have placed in the introduction those parts of plane trigonometry which he requires. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ...the retinal image depends upon two factors: (1) the visual angle subtended by the object; (2) the distance between the second nodal point and the retina ((?2). If the visual angle be kept constant and minimal, the retinal image, and therefore the visual acuity, will vary directly as the distance between the second nodal point and the retina. If we replace d in equations (9), p. 70, by F' + y, where y is the variable distance of the correcting lens from the anterior focal plane of the eye, we have (remembering that F = F = F', say) By (1), p. 87, the distance of the retina from the posterior focus of the emmetropic eye = x = .pit-nil r-.r'F.-.Fp.. (9). That is, the uncorrected hypermetropic eye has smaller, and the uncorrected myopic eye has larger, retinal images than the emmetropic eye. We must now consider the effect of accommodation upon the images. The optical effect of accommodation is to increase the distance between the second nodal point and the retina. Hence, accommodation is accompanied by increase in the size of the retinal image. The relative visual acuity, or visual acuity for near objects, is therefore greater than the absolute visual acuity, or acuity for distant objects. This accounts in large measure for the difficulty in relaxing the accommodation in ophthalmoscopic examination by the direct method. The uncorrected hypermetropic eye has smaller retinal images than the emmetropic eye; these are increased beyond the size of the emmetropic images by a correcting lens outside the anterior focal plane of the eye. Similarly the correction of presbyopia also results in the production of larger images. The uncorrected myopic eye has larger retinal images than the emmetropic eye; these are made smaller than the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Optics: For Students of Ophthalmology The question as to the method of transmission of light has been the subject of much controversy. Leaving aside the speculations of the ancients, the two theories are the Corpuscular or Emission The ory and the Wave Theory. The first supposes a luminous body to give off certain particles, which, striking the eye, produce vision. The wave theory supposes that all space is pervaded by a substance called ether; and that by means of this substance, waves, excited in the luminous body, are transmitted to the eye. While some of the phenomena of light can be explained by either theory, experiments by Huyghens, Young, and Fresnel have rendered the emission theory untenable. While we are forced to the belief that light is propagated in waves, we are ignorant as to the nature of these waves. It was formerly supposed that the ether was a highly elastic body, transmitting vibrations of its particles through space just as a rod of steel, if struck near one end, will convey the vibrations to the other end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Lenses and Accessories: Lenses, Frames, Magnifiers and Readers The works Bausch & Lomb Optical Company are located in the City of Rochester, State of New York, and cover on the St. Paul Street tract a floor space of about ten acres, with additional buildings occupying a land area of about nine acres on the river flats. The former buildings include the executive offices and main manufacturing plant, while those on the latter site are chiefly devoted to the moulding of optical glass into suitable forms, preparatory to grinding. The buildings themselves are designed to meet all requirements for the delicate operations involved in optical and mechanical works of precision. The rooms are large and airy, well lighted and heated by a modern blower system with a water cooling device which insures pure air of proper humidity. The plant is also provided with refrigerating machinery, and all machines and buildings are exceptionally well safeguarded for the protection of life and property. The equipment for the manufacture of the varied lines of optical instruments is of the most modern types known to mechanics. Much of the machinery is designed and constructed by our own experts in our own plant and is the result of an experience of more than sixty years of optical and mechanical endeavor. Owing to the technical character of the industry, all devices undergo constant supervision and inspection in order to maintain the equipment at its highest point of efficiency. The organization comprises a force of approximately 2,500 employees thoroughly trained in their respective branches. From the computations of the Scientific and Technical Bureaus, through to the intricate mechanical operations, each progressive step is marked by a systematic control until the product reaches final inspection, when our trade mark guarantees the Bausch & Lomb standard of quality. In addition to the executive offices at Rochester, N. Y., branch offices are maintained and other representatives established in different large commercial centers to provide adequate distribution for our products, not only in America but for the markets of England and her colonies, throughout the continent of Europe and in parts of Asia. The addresses of the different branches follow: New York: 200 Fifth Avenue. Washington: 613 Fifteenth Street, N. W. Chicago: 122 S. Michigan Boulevard. San Francisco: 154 Sutter Street. Frankfurt a. M.: G. M. B. H. 30 Schillerstrasse. London: 37-38, Hatton Garden, E. C. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
