It is a manual designed principally for the as sistance o-f_students in wood-work in its various branches as well as a help to the instructor. The author has endeavored to present the subject in sucha manner as to make simple the transition from' the easier to the more difficult operations. The exercises have been selected after an experience in this line of instruction, covering aperiod of twelve years and will be found practical in their application to students in manual training in technical and industrial schools P'art first, Car pentry, is intended to cover fioiii sixty to seventy hours of work. Part second, Wo - od Turning, not to exceed thirty-five hours. Part third, Pattern - Making, fifty or Sixty hours, thus making a course which will be found to touch the principal points in the three branches of wood - work commonly taught in manual training schools or schools of technology or engineering. It has been the aim' of the author to give in this course just enough instruction to enable the student to study the problems for himself, thereby the better fitting him for the construe tio-n of patterns for any machine which may [be assigned him to complete his 'course in pattern - making, which is changed annually. A perusal of this work will disclose many features which the author feels sure will commend themselves to in structors and others interested in this department of school work. With the hope that these pages may prove a valuable aid to students and teachers alike, this work is presented to the public. Book Synopsis Handbook in Woodwork and Carpentry, for Teachers and Normal Schools by : Charles A. King
Download or read book Handbook in Woodwork and Carpentry, for Teachers and Normal Schools written by Charles A. King and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook in Woodwork and Carpentry, for Teachers and Normal Schools This series consists of five volumes, four of which are intended as textbooks for pupils in manual-training, industrial, trade, technical, or normal schools. The fifth book of the series, the "Handbook in Woodwork and Carpentry," is for the use of teachers and of normal students who expect to teach the subjects treated in the other four volumes. Of the pupils' volumes, the first two, "Elements of Woodwork" and "Elements of Construction," are adapted to the needs of students in manual-training schools, or in any institution in which elementary woodwork is taught, whether as purely educational handwork, or as preparatory to a high, or trade, school course in carpentry or vocational training. The volumes "Constructive Carpentry" and "Inside Finishing" are planned with special reference to the students of technical, industrial, or trade schools, who have passed through the work of the first two volumes, or their equivalent. The subjects treated are those which will be of greatest value to both the prospective and the finished workman. For the many teachers who are obliged to follow a required course, but who are allowed to introduce supplementary or optional models under certain conditions, and for others who have more liberty and are able to make such changes as they see fit, this series will be found perfectly adaptable, regardless of the grades taught. To accomplish this, the material has been arranged by topics, which may be used by the teacher irrespective of the sequence, as each topic has to the greatest extent possible been treated independently. Book Synopsis Manual Training for Common Schools by : Eldreth G. Allen
Download or read book Manual Training for Common Schools written by Eldreth G. Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training for Common Schools: An Organized Course in Wood-Working IN preparing this book on Manual Training the author has at tempted _to be thorough rather than complete. No attempt has been made to add anything new to the subject-matter, but Only to arrange well - known facts so that they will offer as systematic and complete a course of study as is offered in any of the older organized courses. The arrangement of the text as herein presented is the direct result of five years' teaching the subject of wood-working to, beginning classes. This class work was preceded by a number of years of shop work as a journeyman machinist and a factory foreman, as well as by a four years' college course in science and engineering. Help in preparing the text has been gleaned from so many fields that it would be impossible to make direct mention of all who have given valuable assistance. The author wishes, however, to acknowledge the aid given by Mr. Charles E. Emmerich, principal of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, and Mr. Paul W. Covert, head of the manual training department, who have allowed such freedom in the conduct of classes that it has been possible to make all parts of the work measure up to a class-room test. Acknowledgment is due Mr. Otto Stark, head of the art depart ment of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, for his earnest and careful criticism of the models, drawings, and photographs. This criticism has added much to the value of the text. The final drawings from which the cuts were executed were made by Mr. Edward Stark, of Indianapolis.
