Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Applied Mechanics In this Second Edition we have combined the two volumes of the First, rearranging the whole, and introducing important additional matter. The work forms an elementary consecutive treatise on the subject of Internal Stress and Strain, based on the late Professor Eankine streatment of the subject in his Applied Mechanics and Civil Engineering. The end kept in view is the Scientific and Practical Design of Earthworks, of Linkwork Structures, and of Blockwork Structures. The whole is illustrated by a systematic and graduated set of Examples. At every point graphical methods are combined with the analytical, and a feature of the work is, that the diagrams are to scale, and, besides illustrating the text, each diagram suits some of the numerical examples, having printed on its face both the data and results. For the Student with little time to draw, the full-page diagrams should prove useful models, furnishing concisely the data and checking the results of his constructions to a bold scale without delay. In Chapter III. a Moving Model of Ptankine's Ellipse of. Stress is shown at page 63. It was exhibited to the Royal Irish Academy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Mechanics: An Elementary General Introduction to the Theory of Structures and Machines; With Diagrams, Illustrations, and Examples Or: the author's appointment to lecture on Mechanics in the Royal Naval College, a course of elementary lessons was commenced, based on Raxmx's well-known treatise, with such assistawc as could be obtained from other sources. After some years this course assumed a tolerably permanent form, and it was thought desirable to print it, partly From the inconvenience to students of being exclusively depen dent on an] instruction, and partly from an idea that it might be used'nl to others besides those who were immediately addressed. The place which these lectures occupy in the programme of the College Will be found explained in an Appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Mechanics for Beginners IN the preparation of this little book, the object has been to provide students of engineering and allied constructive arts with a practical statement of the principles of Mechanics essential to an intelligent interest in their occupations. While the book will serve as a sufficient preparation for the elementary examination in Applied Mechanics of the Board of Education, its contents are not limited by the syllabus of this or any other examining body. Before the student can profitably take up the study of Mechanics, he should be acquainted with the elementary por tions of Practical Geometry, Machine or Building Construction, and Practical Mathematics. This preliminary knowledge has therefore been taken for granted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Applied Mechanics The present volume consists in great measure of selections from the matter contained in a larger treatise 1 on the same subject, of which it may there fore in a certain sense be described as an abridged edition. The portions selected have, however, been completely rearranged and rewritten in fuller detail with much additional illustration, and the whole con sequently forms a virtually new book, which, being smaller in compass and more elementary in Character, may, it is hoped, serve as an introduction to the larger work, and meet the wants of junior students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Mechanics: An Elementary Manual on Specially Arranged for the Use of First-Year Science and Art, City and Guild of London Institute, and Other Elementary Engineering Students Great stress has been laid on principles, definitions, uniformity of notation, and symbols. The explanations, illustrations, and examples are such as will enable students to apply leading prin ciples to practical work, and teach them to think out and investi gate results for themselves, rather than depend blindly on rules and formulas. In every Lecture a number of examples have been fully worked out, and, wherever possible, illustrated experiments have been described, so as to encourage students to carry out similar or more elaborate experiments in actual practice, rather than rely on rule-of-thumb proportions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Mechanics: An Elementary Manual on Specially Arranged for the Use of First-Year Science and Art, City and Guilds of London Institute, and Other Elementary Engineering Students The continued popularity of this book and its companion, Elementary "Steam and the Steam Engine," has necessitated new editions of each at the same time. This encouragement has stimulated me to revise them, and to incorporate, as far as possible, at the end of the several Lectures, all the Science and Art Questions for the past dozen years, as well as those set by the Board of Education, South Kensington, up to and including those of 1902. Where this has not been found convenient, the Questions have been inserted under Appendix B., with references for their solution. In Appendix A. I have added short descriptions with illustrations of the best forms of Limit and Micrometer Gauges, as these instruments are now used in many of the best engineering works. I have again to thank Mr. Forrest Sutherland, of Bloemfontein, and now Mr. John Cameron, of Montrose Technical College, for their Communications. In addition to several kind hints from other Teachers and Students, I have to thank Mr. John Fairley, B.Sc., for having helped me with the preparation of this Edition. I shall feel much obliged to Teachers and Students for any hints which will enable me to keep this Manual abreast of the times, as well as their opinions regarding the best kinds of Working Models for demonstrating the most interesting and instructive Problems in this book, with the view of making it as useful as possible to young engineers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Examples in Applied Mechanics and Elementary Theory of Structures The following papers in Applied Mechanics and Elementary Theory of Structures are designed for engineering students who have some familiarity with the general principles underlying these subjects. Confidence and facility in applying these principles can only be acquired by assiduous practice in the solution of problems, and for this purpose the student must have ready access to a large stock of miscellaneous examples. The examples contained in text-books are subject to the defect that the principle to be employed in any particular case is of necessity usually indicated by the chapter with which the problem is associated. If his knowledge is to be of any practical value, the student must sooner or later learn to be independent of such extraneous aid, and with the object of helping him towards this state of self reliance, these twenty 3 papers of examples have been compiled. A considerable number of the questions have been taken from examination papers set at the Cambridge Engineering Laboratory, and with the exception of a few more advanced problems in the last five papers the standard agrees with that of the "A" papers in the Engineering Tripos Examination. Their knowledge of mechanics is limited to what was gained during their study of physics and from practice in laboratory and shop; hence no apology is needed for making matters plain and easy in the first chapters of a work which later on leads up to the Theory of Structures, Internal Stress, Motion under Complicated Conditions, Forms of Energy, and higher Graphics. Barrett the author is deeply indebted for the great care, intelligence, and skill which he has bestowed on the preparation of the illustrations from the author's pencil drawings and sketches. A good and enthusiastic teacher interested in his subject does not as a rule follow strictly any particular text-book, not even if he has written it himself, and many of the best teachers seldom refer to any text-book in their lectures. It is, however, very important that a student should form as good a library of his own as he can afford, and the author of this book hopes that it will not be unworthy of a place in such a library, especially in the initial stages of its formation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook on Mechanical Drawing: Elementary Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Applied Mechanics, Machine Design Atoms unite to form molecules, and a collection of mole cules form a mass or body. A drop of water may be divided and subdivided, until each particle is so small that it can only be seen by the most powerful microscope, but each particle will still be water. Now, imagine the division to be carried on still farther until a limit is reached beyond which it is impossible to go without changing the nature Of the particle. The particle of water is now SO small that, if it be divided again, it will cease to be water, and will be something else; we call this particle a molecule. If a molecule of water be divided, it will yield two atoms of hydrogen gas, and one of oxygen gas. If a molecule Of Sulphuric acid be divided, it will yield two atoms of hydro gen, one of sulphur, and four of oxygen.
