Download or read book Diderot's Part written by Andrew H. Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon the rich heterogeneity of Denis Diderot's texts-whether scientific, aesthetic, philosophic or literary-Andrew Clark locates and examines an important epistemological shift both in Diderot's oeuvre and in the eighteenth century more generally. In Western Europe during the 1750s, the human body was reconceptualized as physiologists began to emphasize the connections, communication, and relationships among relatively autonomous somatic parts and an animated whole. This new conceptualization was part of a larger philosophical and epistemological shift in the relationship of part to whole, as discovered in that of bee to swarm; organ to body; word to phrase; dissonant chord to harmonic progression; article to encyclopedia; and individual citizen to body politic. Starting from Diderot's concept of the body as elaborated from the physiological research and speculation of contemporaries such as Haller and Bordeu, the author investigates how the logic of an unstable relationship of part to whole animates much of Diderot's writing in genres ranging from art criticism to theatre to philosophy of science. In particular, Clark examines the musical figure of dissonance, a figure used by Diderot himself, as a useful theoretical model to give insight into these complex relations. This study brings a fresh approach to the classic question of whether Diderot's work represents a consistent point of view or a series of ruptures and changes of position.
Book Synopsis Rameau and Musical Thought in the Enlightenment by : Thomas Christensen
Download or read book Rameau and Musical Thought in the Enlightenment written by Thomas Christensen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ranging widely over the musical and intellectual thought of the eighteenth century, Thomas Christensen orients Rameau's accomplishments in the light of contemporaneous traditions of music theory as well as many of the scientific ideas current in the French Enlightenment. Rameau is revealed to be an unsuspectedly syncretic and sophisticated thinker, betraying influences ranging from neoplatonic thought and Cartesian mechanistic metaphysics to Locke's empirical psychology and Newtonian experimental science. Additional primary documents and manuscripts (many revealed here for the first time) help clarify Rameau's fascinating and stormy relationship with the Encyclopedists: Diderot, Rousseau, and d'Alembert." "This book will be of value to all music theorists concerned with the foundations of harmonic tonality and it should also be of interest to scholars of eighteenth-century science, the Enlightenment, and the general history of ideas."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Bach Perspectives by : Michael Marissen
Download or read book Bach Perspectives written by Michael Marissen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines a fascinating dimension of J. S. Bach’s music: the crucial influence it has exerted upon the musical works of many other composers. In a series of articles by distinguished musicologists, compositions by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Hindemith, and others are considered in light of the ways in which they bear Bach’s unmistakable imprint. Ludwig Finscher opens with a survey of Bach’s influence through several centuries, examining his sway over composers from Mozart and Beethoven to Schumann, Wagner, and Reger. Thomas Christensen shows that various of Bach’s early disciples claimed authority from their master for opposing assessments of music and musical theory. Robert L. Marshall argues that Mozart’s intense involvement with Bach’s music probably occurred much earlier in his career than has generally been thought. William Kinderman demonstrates that Beethoven’s assimilation of Bach also occurred very early in his career and that all aspects of Beethoven’s mature style are heavily indebted to Bach. Walter Frisch reveals how Brahms’s absorption in Bach’s work involves a fruitful relation to cultural tradition. Steven Hinton traces Hindemith’s evolving—yet essentially consistent—understanding of Bach’s music. A work that subtly yet decisively traces Bach’s presence in the ongoing history of composition, this volume is an important contribution to our understanding of Bach and of his many eminent successors.
Book Synopsis Rousseau Among the Moderns by : Julia Simon
Download or read book Rousseau Among the Moderns written by Julia Simon and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned for his influence as a political philosopher, a writer, and an autobiographer, Jean-Jacques Rousseau is known also for his lifelong interest in music. He composed operas and other musical pieces, invented a system of numbered musical notation, engaged in public debates about music, and wrote at length about musical theory. Critical analysis of Rousseau’s work in music has been principally the domain of musicologists, rarely involving the work of scholars of political theory or literary studies. In Rousseau Among the Moderns, Julia Simon puts forth fresh interpretations of The Social Contract, the Discourse on the Origin of Inequality, and the Confessions, as well as other texts. She links Rousseau’s understanding of key concepts in music, such as tuning, harmony, melody, and form, to the crucial problem of the individual’s relationship to the social order. The choice of music as the privileged aesthetic object enables Rousseau to gain insight into the role of the aesthetic realm in relation to the social and political body in ways often associated with later thinkers. Simon argues that much of Rousseau’s “modernism” resides in the unique role that he assigns to music in forging communal relations.
