Book excerpt: Advances in Pharmacology and Therapeutics II, Volume 2: Neurotransmitters-Receptors is the second of a six-volume compilation of the scientific papers of invited speakers of the Eighth International Congress of Pharmacology. Organized into seven parts, this book begins with an invited lecture on the kinetic analysis of the neuronal and extraneuronal uptake and metabolism of catecholamines. Subsequent parts discuss the regulation of receptor-mediated events; presynaptic receptors in the peripheral and central nervous system; neurotransmitters; and receptor antibodies. The isolated nervous systems in the research of neurotransmission and trophic interactions between nerve and muscle are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Preface to Volume 1, we stated: This series recognizes that investigators who have entered neurochemistry from the biochemical tradition have a rather specialized view of the brain. Too often, interdisci plinary offerings are initially attractive but turn out to recite basic biochemical considera tions. We have come to believe that there are now sufficiently large numbers of neurochemists to support a specialized venture such as the present one. We have begun with consideration of traditional areas of neurochemistry which show considerable scientific activity. We hope they will serve the neurochemist both for general reading and for specialized information. The reader will also have the opportunity to reflect on the unbridled speculation that results from the disinhibiting effects on the author who has been invited to write a chapter. We plan occasionally also to offer reviews of areas not completely in the domain of neurochemistry which we nevertheless feel to be sufficiently timely to be called to the attention of all who use chemical principles and tools in an effort to better understand the brain. The contributions to the present volume pursue these goals. We believe the series has set high standards and has continued to uphold them. In accordance with the principle stated in the last paragraph of the Preface Volume 1, we include in this volume Koshland's "Sensory Response in Bacteria" (Chapter 5).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 15 of Handbook of Psychopharmacology represents the first of a new series of volumes whose aim is to bring earlier sections of the work up to date by describing the latest developments in the field. It is now seven years since the first Handbook volumes on Basic Neuropharmacology were published, and there have been many important advances. As in many other areas in science, progress in this field has depended to a considerable extent on the availability of new experimental methods, and Volume 15 reviews some major recent developments, including new autoradiographic techniques that allow direct visualization of drug and transmitter receptors in the nervous system, and the pinpointing of the precise locations of the changes in brain metabolism elicited by various drug treatments. Volumes 16 and 17 will cover two of the most active areas for basic research in psychopharmacology at the moment: the characterization of drug and transmitter receptors in brain by radioligand binding techniques, and studies of the role of small peptides in brain function. The latter area, in particular, illustrates how rapidly progress continues to be made in basic research on the mechanisms of chemical communication within the nervous system. Seven years ago when the Handbook first appeared none of the opioid peptides (enkephalins and endorphins) had yet been identified. Since then a whole new area of basic biological research has focused on these substances, and in addition we know of more than thirty other neuropeptides with putative eNS transmitter functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural Models of Plasticity: Experimental and Theoretical Approaches focuses on the use of theoretical and empirical methods in investigating the role of neuronal plasticity in learning, memory, and complex brain functions. It examines the neuromodulation in relation to associative learning and memory, developmental assembly of various components of learning and memory, cellular and molecular processes contributing to associative and non-associative learning, and higher-order features of classical conditioning. Organized into 19 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the central pathways mediating conditioning in the marine mollusk Hermissenda and the behavior modified by conditioning, along with the role of neuromodulation in associative learning in this organism. It then proceeds with a discussion of learning and memory in the marine mollusk Aplysia, the Hebb rule for synaptic plasticity, a drive-reinforcement model of neuronal function for predicting classical conditioning phenomena, and the relationship between olfactory processing and associative memory. The reader is also introduced to a neural circuit for classical conditioning of the eyelid closure response, molecular mechanisms and roles of long-term depression in cerebellar function, and functions of neuronal networks in the hippocampus and neocortex in memory. The book concludes with a chapter on models of calcium regulation in neurons. This book is a valuable resource for neurobiologists, psychologists, adaptive systems theorists, and others working in the fields of anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, molecular biophysics, chemistry, biology, and psychiatry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Synapses covers the considerable advances in understanding the complex physiology of synapses. This book is divided into 16 chapters that emphasize the mechanism of synaptic transmission. The first chapters describe the structural and physiological features of chemically transmitting synapses. The subsequent chapters deal with the excitatory postsynaptic responses to presynaptic impulse and the release of transmitter by presynaptic impulses. These topics are followed by discussions of the impulse generation by the excitatory postsynaptic potential; the postsynaptic electrical events produced by chemically transmitting inhibitory synapses; the ionic mechanism generating the inhibitory postsynaptic potential. The last chapters consider the mechanism of inhibitory transmitter substances, pathways responsible for postsynaptic inhibitory action, and the trophic and plastic properties of synapses. This book will prove useful to physiologists, neurologists, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept for Vasopressin: Principles and Properties originated during the sum mer of 1983. From reviewing the rich and diverse literature on vasopressin, it became evident that the rapid advancements in this field made it difficult to syn thesize the information gathered from divergent scientific disciplines into a coherent view of the biological role of vasopressin. We perceived the need for a series of critical reviews delineating this recent progress. Over the past decade, major advances have been made in studies of the anatomy, physiology, phar macology, molecular biology, and behavioral activities of vasopressin. This is, in no small measure, due to the finding that vasopressin can no longer be regarded solely as a neurohypophysial hormone. Our present knowledge is that vasopressin is synthesized in also has an axonal messenger role in the nervous system and of the brain, although the functions of vasopressin in these periph sites outside of vasopressin eral sites are not well understood. In order to prepare an overview concentrating on recent studies in vertebrates, authors were selected based on their expertise and asked to review their research area, including the work from other laboratories. It was our intent to provide an updated definitive reference which would complement and extend such past texts as Neurohypophysial Hor mones and Similar Polypeptides (Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, Vol ume XXIII, 1968) and The Pituitary Gland and Its Neuroendocrine Control (Handbook of Physiology, Section 7: Volume IV, 1974).
