Book excerpt: Itinerant magnetism occurs in materials that exhibit a spontaneous polarization of the electronic structure due to the destabilization effect of a large peak in the Density of States at the Fermi level. This itinerancy is difficult to comprehensively characterize, but its roots in the electronic structure allow us to perform perturbations (such as electron-doping, hole-doping, or applying external pressure) to modify the material's magnetic behavior in a more predictable manner.In Chapter One, we address background information and predicate our research hypotheses using prior literature. Understanding the available resources allows educated decisions on target systems that may exhibit controllable changes to their electronic and crystal structure under certain stimuli. In Chapter Two, we discuss the synthesis method of the chosen materials, briefly address the applied perturbation for each system, and introduce the characterization methods used to study the resulting behavior. In Chapter Three, we begin a study of transition-metal germanides, starting with an in-depth look at the CuFe2-xCoxGe2 system and attempting to correlate the chemical bonding in the material to its magnetic properties. CuFe2Ge2 has features in its electronic structure reminiscent of the Fe-based superconductors, but, on its own, this material exhibits several competing magnetic ground states. The substitution of Co for Fe perturbs this system through electron doping. We show by a combination of diverse characterization methods and theoretical analysis how this substitution affects the chemical bonding and, by proxy, the itinerant magnetism. In Chapter Four, we continue to the related Cu0.6Mn2.4Ge2 system, a ferromagnetic material with a complex crystal structure disorder model that includes mixing of transition metal atoms and vacancies in the same crystallographic sites. We characterize the crystal and magnetic structures using models developed by X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetic measurements, and theoretical calculations. In Chapter Five, we turn to the EuMn2Pn2 (Pn = P, As) materials with the CaAl2Si2 structure type. We address their similarities to the ubiquitous ThCr2Si2 structure type and study how the electronic and crystal structure of the system respond to applied pressure. In each case, we utilize a chemical and physical control over the electronic and crystal structures that expand our understanding of itinerant magnetism in ternary and pseudo-ternary metallic systems. The knowledge established in this thesis further crystallizes the utility of electronic structure calculations as a roadmap toward understanding and predicting itinerant magnetic systems, and ultimately moves the field closer to comprehension of more complex and exotic behavior that can be observed in these systems.
