Book excerpt: A molecular understanding of electron transfer is crucial to understanding the molecular basis of metabolic processes in which electron transfer is essential, diseases involving these processes, and drug design targeting these processes. This book provides a cohesive and comprehensive discussion of computational methods used for electron transfer proteins and what has been learned from such studies for the first time in a book. It also gives an overview of results from theory, computation, and experiment about electron transfer proteins. This resource also includes strategies for studying metal sites that have not been examined computationally.

Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Biophysics is envisioned both as an easily accessible source of information and as an introductory guide to the scientific literature. It includes entries describing both Techniques and Systems. In the Techniques entries, each of the wide range of methods which fall under the heading of Biophysics are explained in detail, together with the value and the limitations of the information each provides. Techniques covered range from diffraction (X-ray, electron and neutron) through a wide range of spectroscopic methods (X-ray, optical, EPR, NMR) to imaging (from electron microscopy to live cell imaging and MRI), as well as computational and simulation approaches. In the Systems entries, biophysical approaches to specific biological systems or problems – from protein and nucleic acid structure to membranes, ion channels and receptors – are described. These sections, which place emphasis on the integration of the different techniques, therefore provide an inroad into Biophysics from a biological more than from a technique-oriented physical/chemical perspective. Thus the Encyclopedia is intended to provide a resource both for biophysicists interested in methods beyond those used in their immediate sub-discipline and for those readers who are approaching biophysics from either a physical or biological background.

Book excerpt: An Fe- and Cu-Protein Symposium was held on December 15-18, 1975 at the East West Center-University of Hawaii and was sponsored by the United States-Japan Cooperative Science Program under the auspices of the National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. It was recognized by the organizers of the symposium that metalloproteins are very important in the field of health science and a subject worthy of discussion by experts from the United States, Japan and Europe. The meeting was restricted to Fe- and Cu-proteins but this is still a very broad subject matter and therefore, selected topics of current interest in this field were chosen. This book contains the collected papers from most of the symposium participants. The subject matter covered in this book is divided into four parts. These are: 1) the iron-sulfur proteins (which are not a part of the mitochondrial electron transport system); 2) the iron-sulfur proteins and heme proteins of the mitochondrial electron transport system; 3) other heme and nonheme iron proteins; and 5) selected copper proteins. The organizers of the symposium wish to express their gratitude to the participants, the session chairmen, and Drs. I.C. Gunsalus and E. Frieden who assisted in the organization of the symposium.

Book excerpt: An Introduction that describes the origin of cytochrome notation also connects to the history of the field, focusing on research in England in the pre-World War II era. The start of the modern era of studies on structure-function of cytochromes and energy-transducing membrane proteins was marked by the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, given to J. Deisenhofer, H. Michel, and R. Huber for determination of the crystal structure of the bacterial photosynthetic reaction center. An ab initio logic of presentation in the book discusses the evolution of cytochromes and hemes, followed by theoretical perspectives on electron transfer in proteins and specifically in cytochromes. There is an extensive description of the molecular structures of cytochromes and cytochrome complexes from eukaryotic and prokaryotic sources, bacterial, plant and animal. The presentation of atomic structure information has a major role in these discussions, and makes an important contribution to the broad field of membrane protein structure-function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Iron Metabolism: A Comprehensive Treatise provides a comprehensive treatment of microbial iron metabolism. It aims to contribute to an increased understanding of the path of iron in microbial species and, eventually, in the plant and animal. The book is organized into five parts. Part I describes some features of iron and its function in the microbial world. These include a historical sketch of the recognition of the importance of iron in cellular physiology; a description of certain physical properties of ferrous and ferric ions; and a list of various known biocoordination derivatives grouped by ligand atom. Metabolism under iron-limited conditions is also examined. Part II presents studies on iron transport, biosynthesis, and storage in microorganisms. Part III examines iron enzymes and proteins, including ferredoxin, rubredoxin, nitrogenase, and hydrogenase. Part IV deals with reactions of inorganic substrates. Part V presents a study on the role of bacterial iron metabolism in infection and immunity.
