Download or read book Low-energy Electron Scattering from Atomic Oxygen written by R. H. NEYNABER and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total cross section for the scattering of electrons by atomic O was measured as a function of electron energy from 2.3 to 11.6 ev. The number of electrons scattered from a region defined by the intersection of an electron beam and a modulated molecular O beam was compared with the number scattered when the O beam was partially dissociated. A radio-frequency discharge dissociated about 30% of the molecules. The degree of dissociation was measured with a mass spectrometer. From the data, the ratios of atomic to molecular scattering cross sections were obtained. The absolute atomic values were calculated by multiplying these ratios by the molecular O cross sections obtained by Bruche (Ann. Physik 83:1065, 1957). The result is a virtually constant cross section of 6.2! 0.5 a2o in the entire energy range studied. These results are compared with 5 theoretical estimates. (Author).

Book Synopsis Interaction of Slow Electrons with Atomic Oxygen and Atomic Nitrogen by : Milton M. Klein
Download or read book Interaction of Slow Electrons with Atomic Oxygen and Atomic Nitrogen written by Milton M. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polarization potential for an electron in the field of an oxygen atom was determined by utilizing recent experimental results on the binding energy of 0( - ). The corresponding polarization potential for atomic nitrogen was obtained from the results for oxygen by an extrapo lation based on the theory of polarization. From these results the photo cross section for 0( - ) and the scattering cross section sections for oxygen and nitrogen were calculated. The photo cross section is in good agreement with experimental results. The scattering cross sections are compared with other recent calculations. It is also shown on the basis of the general theory of the photo cross section that the energy dependence of the cross section determines the scattering length for electron scattering. The agreement of the computed photo cross section with experiment therefore is a direct check on the scattering prediction. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross sections for the elastic scattering of electrons from atomic oxygen are calculated in the energy range between 0 and 13.6 electron volts. Polarization of the atom is included by using a term in the potential function which has the correct asymptotic behavior and which vanishes at the origin. Previous theoretical and experimental results are discussed.
Book Synopsis Electron Scattering by : Colm T. Whelan
Download or read book Electron Scattering written by Colm T. Whelan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a unity to physics; it is a discipline which provides the most fundamental understanding of the dynamics of matter and energy. To understand anything about a physical system you have to interact with it and one of the best ways to learn something is to use electrons as probes. This book is the result of a meeting, which took place in Magdalene College Cambridge in December 2001. Atomic, nuclear, cluster, soHd state, chemical and even bio- physicists got together to consider scattering electrons to explore matter in all its forms. Theory and experiment were represented in about equal measure. It was meeting marked by the most lively of discussions and the free exchange of ideas. We all learnt a lot. The Editors are grateful to EPSRC through its Collaborative Computational Project program (CCP2), lOPP, the Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics (DAMOPP) and the Atomic Molecular Interactions group (AMIG) of the Institute of Physics for financial support. The smooth running of the meeting was enormously facilitated by the efficiency and helpfulness of the staff of Magdalene College, for which we are extremely grateful. This meeting marked the end for one of us (CTW) of a ten-year period as a fellow of the College and he would like to take this opportunity to thank the fellows and staff for the privilege of working with them.
Book Synopsis The Effect of Several Configuration Interaction Target States on the Elastic Scattering of Low-energy Electrons by Complex Atoms by : Ed R. Smith
Download or read book The Effect of Several Configuration Interaction Target States on the Elastic Scattering of Low-energy Electrons by Complex Atoms written by Ed R. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total wave function (target plus incident electron) is represented by a close coupling expansion. For complex atoms such as atomaic helium and oxygen, the effects of configuration interaction target states are discussed and analyzed, in part. For atomic helium, the doublet S partial-wave elastic cross section obtained using a He configuration interaction ground state is virtually identical with the corresponding cross section obtained using a Roothaan-Hartree-Fock ground state. In all cases studied, the elastic phase shift is shown to increase with the addition of atomic states and explicit correlation states into the expansion for the total wave function. For atomic oxygen, the quartet P partial-wave elastic phase shift can increase to such an extent as to introduce a 'resonance' behavior into the low-energy part of the elastic cross section. Finally, a second procedure is discussed for including correlation states when CI target states are used in the close-coupling expansion.

Book Synopsis Variational Methods in Electron-Atom Scattering Theory by : Robert K. Nesbet
Download or read book Variational Methods in Electron-Atom Scattering Theory written by Robert K. Nesbet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of scattering phenomena is a major theme of modern physics. A scattered particle provides a dynamical probe of the target system. The practical problem of interest here is the scattering of a low energy electron by an N-electron atom. It has been difficult in this area of study to achieve theoretical results that are even qualitatively correct, yet quantitative accuracy is often needed as an adjunct to experiment. The present book describes a quantitative theoretical method, or class of methods, that has been applied effectively to this problem. Quantum mechanical theory relevant to the scattering of an electron by an N-electron atom, which may gain or lose energy in the process, is summarized in Chapter 1. The variational theory itself is presented in Chapter 2, both as currently used and in forms that may facilitate future applications. The theory of multichannel resonance and threshold effects, which provide a rich structure to observed electron-atom scattering data, is presented in Chapter 3. Practical details of the computational implementation of the variational theory are given in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 summarize recent appli cations of the variational theory to problems of experimental interest, with many examples of the successful interpretation of complex structural fea tures observed in scattering experiments, and of the quantitative prediction of details of electron-atom scattering phenomena.

Book Synopsis Low-energy Electron Scattering from Atoms and Molecules: a Model by : Carl J. Lenander
Download or read book Low-energy Electron Scattering from Atoms and Molecules: a Model written by Carl J. Lenander and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple model is proposed for the calculation of free-electron wave functions for low-energy electrons incident upon neutral atoms. The region of interaction of the electron with the atom may be separated into three regions, according to the importance of potential: Coulomb plus exchange; Coulomb; and far-field induced polarization. The division of regions is based on mathematical and physical reasons for the characteristic behavior of wave functions in the scattering problem. Examples are given for the elastic scattering of electrons from nitrogen, oxygen and argon. The agreement with experiment and effective-range theory is good. The application of the method to prediction of low-energy electron scattering from homonuclear diatomic molecules is discussed. (Author).
