This book was released on 1998 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors solve, in an ultrarelativistic limit, the time-dependent Dirac equation describing electron-positron pair production in peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions using light front variables and a light-fronts representation, obtaining nonperturbative results for the free pair-creation amplitudes in the collider frame. Their result reproduces the result of second-order perturbation theory in the small charge limit while nonperturbative effects arise for realistic charges of the ions.
Book Synopsis Coherent Electromagnetic Heavy Ion Reactions by :

Book excerpt: Some recent theoretical results on coherent electromagnetic processes in ultrarelativistic heavy ion reactions are surveyed. In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, Coulomb induced cross sections are huge, much larger than geometric. For the RHIC case of 100 GeV x 100 GeV colliding gold ions the predicted cross section for bound-electron positron pairs is about 110 barns. The corresponding cross section for continuum electron-positron pairs has recently been recalculated to be 34,000 barns, consistent with the result of the classic formula of Landau and Lifshitz. The cross section for Coulomb dissociation of the nucleus is about 95 barns, and the cross section for ionization of a single electron on one of the ions is about 100,000 barns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We survey the production of electron, muon and tauon pairs in collisions between nuclei at ultra-relativistic energies. Such studies enhance our understanding of the role of the vacuum in field theory, and provide essential input for several experimental programs. A variety of models for the nuclear and nucleon form factors have been considered, revealing some degree of sensitivity to assumptions about sub-nuclear structure. We predict that the cross sections, even at high invariant masses and transverse momenta, are large on hadronic scales, and should act as useful probes of nuclear and nucleon form factors. 21 refs., 5 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have used beams of 6.4-TeV S ions and 33.2-TeV Pb ions obtained from the CERN-SPS facility to study collision processes of heavy ions at ultrarelativistic energies. Measurements have been made of electron-positron pair production, and capture of an electron produced from the negative continuum onto bound states of the moving ion. Here we report on some aspects of these results. In a new formulation for the theory of electronic stopping power of ions at ultrarelativistic energies. Lindhard and S[o]rensen (LS) find that nuclear size effects should act to reduce the momentum transfer to electrons and hence the stopping power. Using the 33.2-Pb ions, we measured dE/dx in C, Si, Cu, Sn, and Pb targets. The LS theory was confirmed.

Book Synopsis Positron Production in Heavy Ion Collisions by :
Download or read book Positron Production in Heavy Ion Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrow peaks have been observed at GSI Darmstadt in the energy spectra of positrons and sum-energy spectra of positron-electron pairs, produced in collisions of very heavy ions. To date, there is no satisfactory explanation of the origin of these lines although many differing models have been proposed. In this contribution, the authors describe the features of a new experiment aimed at the study of the line phenomenon and present the results of their first experiments. The specific goals of their experiment are to clarify the experimental situation regarding the lines through high-resolution, high-statistics data and, by direct measurement of the vector momenta of the peak pairs, to determine their kinematics.

It is relevant for students who will work on topics being explored at RHIC and the LHC. In the first part, the basic principles of these studies are covered including kinematics, cross sections (including the quark model and parton distribution functions), the geometry of nuclear collisions, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics and relevant aspects of lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. The second part covers some more specific probes of heavy-ion collisions at these energies: high mass thermal dileptons, quarkonium and hadronization. The second part also serves as extended examples of concepts learned in the previous part. Both parts contain examples in the text as well as exercises at the end of each chapter. - Designed for students and newcomers to the field- Focuses on hard probes and QCD- Covers all aspects of high energy heavy-ion physics- Includes worked example problems and exercises
Book Synopsis Quantum Aspects Of Beam Physics - Advanced Icfa Beam Dynamics Workshop by : Pisin Chen
Download or read book Quantum Aspects Of Beam Physics - Advanced Icfa Beam Dynamics Workshop written by Pisin Chen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-04-19 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frontiers of beam research point to increasingly high energy, greater brightness and lower emittance beams with ever-increasing particle species. These demands in turn have triggered a rapidly growing number of beam phenomena that involve quantum effects. Concurrently, the violent accelerations which are becoming available through novel accelerator research may, perhaps, help to investigate fundamental physics associated with general relativity. In view of these exciting developments and the important role they may play in the next century, the world's first conference on the 'Quantum Aspects of Beam Physics', held at Monterey, California, in January 1998, attracted a broad spectrum of experts from beam physics, particle physics, laser science, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and atomic physics. At the end of the meeting, a new term 'quantum beam physics' was coined. This book collects together the excellent reviews and papers on new advances in the field which were presented during the workshop. It should be a valuable reference to all physicists interested in the frontiers of quantum beam physics.
