Book excerpt: Rare-element granitic pegmatites are common hosts to economic deposits of rare metals, including Li, Ta, and rare-earth elements, which are increasing in economic importance due to advancing technology. Gahnite (ZnAl2O4) occurs as an accessory mineral in metamorphosed massive sulfide deposits (MMSDs) and some rare-element granitic pegmatites, including those with rare-metal mineralization, but detailed chemical studies of gahnite in these rocks are very scarce. In this study, gahnite from twenty-four granitic pegmatites and the Broken Hill-type Nine Mile MMSD, Australia, was analyzed for major and trace element chemical compositions to determine the relative degree of evolution of the pegmatites and identify chemical differences between Li-rich and Li-poor pegmatites and between these and MMSDs. In the spinel ternary diagram in terms of mol % gahnite (Ghn), hercynite (Hc), and spinel (Spl) end-members, the compositions of gahnite from the pegmatites fall within the previously defined pegmatite field and are given by: Ghn70.63−98.48Hc0.95−28.61Spl0.00−4.52. Gahnite from the Nine Mile deposit (Ghn55.62−76.06Hc17.47−37.34Spl3.81−10.73) falls within the MMSD field characterized by compositions that reach higher Mg and lower Zn contents compared to gahnite from granitic pegmatites. Gahnite from the LCT (lithium, cesium, tantalum) family, rare-element class, beryl-columbite-phosphate subtype and LCT family, muscovite-rare element class, Li subclass granitic pegmatites of the Comechingones (Blanca Dora, Juan Román, Magdalena, La Ona, and Sin Nombre pegmatites) and Conlara (Nancy pegmatite) pegmatite districts, Pampean Pegmatite Province, Argentina, was analyzed in detail. The chemical composition of gahnite from these pegmatites is defined by the ranges Ghn78.49−90.35Hc9.07−20.52Spl0.25−3.37. Gahnite from the Nancy pegmatite has higher Mg and Mn contents than gahnite from the Comechingones pegmatites. Chemical zoning within gahnite crystals is characterized by an increase in Zn (~2.8 wt.% ZnO) and a decrease in Fe (~2.6 wt.% FeO) from core to rim, reflecting the evolution of the pegmatite melt via simple fractional crystallization. Plots of molecular Fe vs. Zn and Fe+Mg vs. Zn+Mn and Zn/Fe ratios in gahnite display the diadochy and the relative degree of fractionation of the pegmatites. The Zn/Fe ratios range from 3.82 to 9.96. Based on all these parameters, the relative degree of evolution of the pegmatites increases in the order: Sin Nombre [arrow to] Magdalena [arrow to] Juan Román [arrow to] Blanca Dora [arrow to] Nancy [arrow to] La Ona. This order is consistent with mineralogical evidence and indicates that the composition of gahnite in granitic pegmatites can effectively be used to determine the relative degree of evolution of pegmatite melts. The trace elements present in gahnite are first-series transition metals (Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Cu), as well as Mn, Li, Ga, Cd, Sn, and Pb. Gahnite in the Nine Mile deposit reaches higher Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Pb and lower Mn, Li, Ga, Sn, and Cu contents than gahnite from granitic pegmatites. Gahnite from highly evolved granitic pegmatites of the Borborema Pegmatite Province, Brazil, has the highest Cu (up to 68 ppm), Mn (up to 8,819 ppm), Li (up to 376 ppm) and Zn (up to 43 wt.% ZnO) contents and these compositions may be good indicators of Li-rich pegmatites. This study shows that the major and trace element chemistry of gahnite in granitic pegmatites may be used to understand relative pegmatite evolution and to distinguish pegmatites that contain Li-mineralization from barren pegmatites.

Book excerpt: This study involves a portion of the Western Craton subdivision of the Churchill structural province of northern Saskatchewan. It is a detailed study of radioactive pegmatites bordering the Grease River in the Fond-du-Lac map area. Results from field, microscopic, oxygen stable isotope, O-Th-Pb mineral age dating, heavy mineral and electron microprobe mineral studies are used to summarize the geology and uranium mineralization of the Grease River property. The Precambrian basement is comprised of Tazin Group biotite gneisses and pink felsic gneisses. The thinly banded plagioclase-quartz -biotite gneisses developed under middle amphibolite facies metamorphism. The coarser-grained, leucocratic, K-feldspar-plagioclase-quartz-biotite gneisses are evidence of upper amphibolite facies conditions. The pelitic and felsic gneisses formed contemporaneously during a regional metamorphic event involving high temperatures and pressures. Petrological evidence suggests the biotite gneisses formed from low Al, Ca and high Fe, Mg, Ti argillaceous sediments, while the granitic rocks were derived by partial melting of a source similar in compostion to the more mafic units. White, massive pegmatites intrude and migmatize the Tazin Group assemblages. They mainly vary in compositon from trondhjeaite to two-feldspar and alaskite granites depending on the extent of K-metasomatism. The initial plagioclase-guartz-biotite trondhjemitic melt likely formed at temperatures greater than 685°C. At the time of intrusion, high temperatures existed which thermally metamorphosed and melted the gneisses. A later intrusive phase involving qua rtz-m usco vite veining, transformed some white pegmatites into quartz-rich granitoids and quartzolites. The silrcifiction took place during hypothermal conditions (300 to 50U°CJ which, consequently caused extensive alteration of the affected rocks. Zircon separates from biotite and granitic gneisses yield mid-Aphebian d-Pb dates of 2250 Ma. These results are interpreted as Kenoran (2500 0a) survival ages, up-dated by the younger Hudsonian orogeny which essentially re-set their U-Pb radiometric clocks. The white pegmatites have originated from more intensely remobilized portions of the Archean crust. The main trondhjemite to granite pegmatite is dated at 1970 0a, while the late-stage quartz enrichment yields 1845 Ma ages. Condiderable tectonic activity occured during the Hudsonian reactivation. Shearing, plastic deformation and major faulting of the biotite and granitic gneisses are observed in the affected portions of the Grease Fiver linear belt. Also, structural control of the emplacement of the syntectonic pegmatites is inferred since they form in an elongated, discontinuous zone paralleling the NE regional strike. Uranium mineralization is localized in the white pegmatites. Two periods of uranium enrichment are inferred from radiometric, geochronological, petrological and probe studies. In the first, cubic, Th-rich uraninite crystallized with the plagioclase-quartz-biotite assemblage. Common accessories are zircon, molybdenite, apatite, sphene, thorite and iron opaques. A second mineralization period occured during the hydrothermal silicification of the initial pegmatites. Uranium enriched zircons,thorium-bearing minerals and yellow uranyl mineralization are believed to have formed during this time.

Book excerpt: "Although it is well known that A-type granites are enriched in high field strength elements (HFSE), such as Zr, Nb and the REE, the magmatic processes controlling their unusual enrichment are still debated. The 1.24 Ga Strange Lake pluton in the Paleoproterozoic 'Core Zone' of Québec-Labrador provides an extraordinary example of extreme HFSE-enrichment in a peralkaline A-type granite. In this study, unaltered samples from the center of the pluton were analyzed for their bulk rock and mineral major and trace element compositions. Two hypersolvus granite units (south and north) contain a perthitic alkali feldspar as the earliest major phase and a sodic amphibole as a interstitial phase. A transsolvus granite has separate microcline and albite crystals in addition, and a sodic amphibole as phenocryst phase. The primary HFSE-minerals are zircon, monazite-(Ce), pyrochlore group minerals, as well as gagarinite-(Ce). Magma evolution progressed from the hypersolvus to the transsolvus granite, indicated by decreasing bulk Al, and increasing Si, Fe, Rb, REE, Zr, Nb concentrations and alkalinity indices. The transsolvus granite formed by the removal of the feldspar-rich hypersolvus granites, and the saturation in sodic amphibole, which triggered a transition from hypersolvus to subsolvus conditions. The granite magmas evolved and concentrated the HFSE by a combination of alkali feldspar fractionation, density segregation of early HFSE-minerals, and the early unmixing of a REE-rich fluoride melt. The study of the amphibole-group minerals from Strange Lake revealed compositions that range from sodium-calcium amphibole (ferro-ferri-katophorite) in the least evolved granite to sodium amphibole (arfvedsonite, ferro-ferri-leakeite) in the more evolved units. High Na, Si, Li, and low Al and Ca concentrations in the phenocrysts of the transsolvus granite indicate that it crystallized from a more evolved magma. Increasing Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios in the amphibole with granite evolution reflect increasing ƒO2, F- and OH- in the melt. The amphibole REE concentrations vary greatly among the granite units. The late amphibole of the hypersolvus granite contains 0.16 and 0.07 wt. % ∑REE+Y, on average, and the phenocrysts of the transsolvus granite only 0.01 wt. %. The LREE are incompatible in the amphibole structure (apparent D 0.01) and are preferably accommodated by the octahedral C-site. The HREE profiles indicate the compatible behavior for Yb and Lu (apparent D 1), suggesting that their concentrations are controlled by partitioning at the B-site. Large proportions of the bulk HREE content (up to 70 %) reside in the amphibole and their later release through hydrothermal replacement helps explain the unusual HREE enrichmen of the Strange Lake pluton. Age-corrected [epsilon]Nd values of the bulk samples and sodic amphiboles from the pluton reach from -0.6 to -5.7, and -0.3 to -5.3, respectively. The 147Sm/144Nd ratios of the suite are between 0.0967 and 0.1659, large variations that can be explained by in-situ fractionation of early LREE-minerals and late hydrothermal HREE remobilization. The [delta]18O values for quartz are between +8.2 and +9.1, and are considerably higher than the mantle value of 5.7 ± 0.2 ‰. The negative [epsilon]Nd values and positive [delta]18O values indicate that the magma experienced considerable crustal contamination. The underlying Archean Mistinibi (para-) gneiss complex, which is characterized by low [epsilon]Nd and high [delta]18O values, has been considered as the major contaminant. Mixing of 5 - 15 % of such a gneiss with a moderately enriched mantle source would produce values similar to those of the Strange Lake granites. Based on analogies with the Gardar alkaline igneous province (SW-Greenland), the Strange Lake pluton and associated REE-mineralized anorogenic bodies are interpreted to be the result of a combination of subduction-induced fertilization of the sub-lithospheric mantle, crustal extension and in-situ magma evolution.
