Book excerpt: This dissertation contains the theoretical study of microwave scattering from vegetated media and the development of microwave scattering models with applications to these media. A vegetation canopy may consist of deciduous or coniferous leaves, branches, and trunks with certain size and orientation distributions. The formulation of the scattering model for each element of the canopy is carried out and its scatter patterns versus its size and orientation for like and cross polarizations are computed and presented. In particular, an extension is made where vegetation with a compound-leaf pattern is considered. For this type of vegetation, several leaves that form a specific pattern will scatter coherently as a group as opposed to each leaf scattering independently. Hence, a basic scattering element is a compound leaf with a specific leaf-pattern. Based on the study of scattering patterns of different vegetation elements, the scattering models for different vegetation media are formulated. For a leafy vegetation, we model it as a scattering layer with a given type of leaf. For a forested area, we treat it as a two-layer medium: the layer on top is the crown layer consisted of leaves and branches and below it is the trunk layer. In order to verify the validity of the theoretical models for different types of vegetation canopy, extensive comparisons between models and measurements are carried out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model for the backscattering of elelctromagnetic waves from a layer of vegetation is computed using a first order renormalization technique to determine volume scattering. The vegetation soil interface is assumed rough according to the tangent plane approximation and the scattering from this boundary is added incoherently to the volume scattering result. The mean wave in the vegetation is obtained using a bilocal approximation of the Dyson's equation. A free space dyadic Green's function is used along with a correlation function of the dielectric fluctuations which is exponential in form and which also possess different correlation lengths lx, ly, and lz in the x, y, and z, directions. Effective propagation constants are obtained for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. The scattered wave is solved for using a two-dimensional Fourier transform technique and the boundary conditions at either end of the vegetation layer are matched. The far field backscatter coefficients are computed for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. The mean and variance of the dielectric fluctuations are calculated with the aid of Peake's model for the dielectric constant of vegetation. The theory is matched to experimental data taken from a corn field. The resulting values for the correlation parameters are then used to monitor the growth pattern of the corn field over a period of time. Comparison between the theoretical and experimental results over this time period are shown. The theory is also matched to experimental data from spring and fall deciduous trees.

Book excerpt: Advances in space-borne remote sensing have significantly changed the mankind viewpoint how to observe our own Earth planet. Great amount of remote sensing data and images presents new resources to quantitatively describe and monitor our Earth environment, atmosphere, oceanic and land surfaces. In remote sensing, electromagnetic (EM) scattering, emission and wave propagation, as interaction with the Earth environment, lay the physical basis for understanding and extracting geoscientific information. Study of electromagnetic waves with remote sensing application has become an active and interdisciplinary area. This book presents some new progress on the theoretical and numerical approaches for information retrieval of the remote sensing via EM scattering and emission. We begin in Chapter 1 with the vector radiative transfer (VRT) theory for inhomogeneous scatter media. The VRT takes account of multiple scattering, emission and propagation of random scatter media, and quantitatively leads to insights of elucidating and understanding EM wave-terrain surface interaction. Meanwhile, it is extensively applicable to carrying out data interpretation and validation, and to solving the inverse problem, e.g. iteratively, physically or statistically. In Chapter 1, iterative solutions of multiple scattering and emission from inhomogeneous dense scatter media, and inhomogeneous non-spherical scatter media are discussed. Three-dimensional VRT equation (3D-VRT) for spatially inhomogeneous random scatter media for high resolution observation is also investigated. The polarimetric imagery of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology is one of most important advances in space-borne microwave remote sensing during recent decades.

Book excerpt: Remote sensing is a fast-growing field with many important applications as demonstrated in the numerous scientific missions of the Earth Observation System (EOS) worldwide. Given the inter-disciplinary nature of remote sensing technologies, the fulfillment of these scientific goals calls for, among other things, a fundamental understanding of the complex interaction between electromagnetic waves and the targets of interest.Using a systematic treatment, Electromagnetic Scattering: A Remote Sensing Perspective presents some of the recently advanced methods in electromagnetic scattering, as well as updates on the current progress on several important aspects of such an interaction. The book covers topics including scattering from random rough surfaces of both terranean and oceanic natures, scattering from typical man-made targets or important canonical constituents of natural scenes, such as a dielectric finite cylinder or dielectric thin disk, the characterization of a natural scene as a whole represented as a random medium, and the extraction of target features with a polarimetric radar.

Book excerpt: Advances during the last two decades in radio electronics, space science and computers have turned remote sensing technology into one of the most effective tools for global exploration and environmental monitoring. This book is a comprehensive account of the theoretical models and techniques required for a full interpretation of the rich images and data that remote sensing can provide. Starting with the basics of vector radiative transfer and scattering theory, the book goes on to develop quantitative methods involving most comprehensive models of discrete scatters, continuous random media and randomly rough surfaces. References are constantly made to real-world parameters and models involved in the probing of different types of geographical terrain. The book is intended as an introductory graduate text and a research reference. It assumes a reasonable foundation in electromagnetism and common techniques in mathematical physics.

Book excerpt: In this thesis research, a coherent scattering model for microwave remote sensing of vegetation canopy is developed on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations. An accurate model of vegetation structure is essential for the calculation of scattering from vegetations, especially those with closely spaced elements in clusters. The Monte Carlo approach has an advantage over the conventional wave theory in dealing with complex vegetation structures because it is not necessary to find the probability density functions and the pair-distribution functions required in the analytic formulation and usually difficult to obtain for natural vegetation. To achieve a realistic description of the vegetation structure under consideration, two methods may be employed. One method requires the specification of the number of each type of component and the relative orientations of the components. In a structural model which incorporates this method, the detailed features can be preserved to the desired level of accuracy. This structural model is applied to two types of vegetation- --rice crops and sunflowers.
