It contains a brief explanation of the theoretical calculation methods used for obtaining scattering characteristics of these objects. It provides working examples for the analysis of electromagnetic wave scattering processes by different objects. Scattering Characteristics of Aerial and Ground Radar Objects is divided in two sections. The first section includes scattering characteristics for different aerial objects: aircrafts, helicopters, transport and passenger airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles, and missiles. The second section contains data about scattering for many ground objects such as tanks, surface-to-air missile systems, ground radars, and other military objects. In total, the book contains actual data for 63 aerial objects (fighters, attack aircraft, bombers, long-range radar detection aircraft, transport aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles) and 18 ground objects, among which are anti-aircraft missile systems and tanks. This book contains data obtained by computations such as circular diagrams of radar backscattering; mean and median radar cross section values of various objects; probability distributions of echo signal amplitude given various parameters of illumination and various kinds of underlying surfaces (for ground objects). Also, as an example, the scattering characteristics for one surface ship are given. This book will be a valuable reference for scientists, engineers, and researchers of electromagnetic wave scattering, computational electrodynamics, and those working on radar detection and recognition algorithms for aerial and and ground radar targets.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to study the feasibility of computing electromagnetic wave scattering by objects which are buried or partially buried in a lossy ground. The datas obtained through computer solutions of the related Maxwell's Equations can be applied to detection of plastic land mines, tunnels and natural resources. The method used in this investigation is based on the Unimoment method, a unique hybrid of analytical and numerical methods. The extension of the method to include lossy ground half-space was made possible by the development of special eigenfunctions which include the continuity of the air-ground interface. Results were obtained for scattering by buried body of revolution, buried body of revolution with arbitrary orientation and two-body scattering.

Beside the systematically developed Green’s function formalism of the first edition this second and enlarged edition contains additional material regarding group theoretical considerations for nonspherical particles with boundary symmetries, an iterative T-matrix scheme for approximate solutions, and two additional but basic applications. Moreover, to demonstrate the advantages of the group theoretical approach and the iterative solution technique, the restriction to axisymmetric scatterers of the first edition was abandoned.

Book excerpt: Solutions are obtained for the scattering of an incident plane electro-magnetic wave by each of the following perfectly conducting objects: (a) an infinite circular cylinder having an attached sector, which, in the limiting case of zero sector angle, becomes a circular cylinder having a fin, (b) an infinite circular cylinder having two coplanar fins, which, in the limiting case of zero cylinder radius, becomes a strip, (c) a sphere having a fin, which, in the limiting case of zero sphere radius, becomes a circular disc. In each problem, the scatterer is described by sections of constant-coordinate surfaces and the space surrounding the scatterer is partitioned into several regions. The electromagnetic field in each region is expanded in a complete set of Hansen vector wave functions with unknown expansion coefficients. These sets of expansion coefficients are then determined by satisfying the boundary conditions. A review of scattering by the circular cylinder and sphere is also presented. Numerical results are obtained for scattering by the one-finned cylinder, the finned sphere, and circular disc. For the one-finned cylinder and the finned sphere, the results show the effect of the fin on the back scattering by the cylinder and the sphere, respectively. In the case of the circular disc, the results for the back-scattering radar cross section agree with the values given by the solution of W. Andrejewski and that of physical optics. (Author).

Book excerpt: Radar imaging and detection of objects buried in soil has potentially important applications in the areas of nonproliferation of weapons, environmental monitoring, hazardous-waste site location and assessment, and even archeology. In order to understand and exploit this potential, it is first necessary to understand how the soil responds to an electromagnetic wave, and how targets buried within the soil scatter the electromagnetic wave. We examine the response of the soil to a short pulse, and illustrate the roll of the complex dielectric permittivity of the soil in determining radar range resolution. This leads to a concept of an optimum frequency and bandwidth for imaging in a particular soil. We then propose a new definition for radar cross section which is consistent with the modified radar equation for use with buried targets. This radar cross section plays the same roll in the modified radar equation as the traditional radar cross section does in the free-space radar equation, and is directly comparable to it. The radar cross section of several canonical objects in lossy media is derived, and examples are given for several object/soil combinations.

Book excerpt: Diffraction theory describes scattering mechanisms for waves of various physical nature, scattered by objects of different shapes and materials. This book proposes new methods to account for the contour shape, edge profile and boundary conditions of three-dimensional scatterers (in particularly, flat polygons and polyhedrals). A standard method to refine the physical optics approximation (PO) is the heuristic method of edge waves (MEW). In comparison with MEW, the presented approaches simplify the solving and refining the PO approximation without solving a corresponding two-dimensional problem. Furthermore these methods allow to take into account the field perturbation in the vicinity of vertices. While the analytical formulas obtained by using these new approaches are as simple as in the PO case, the accuracy can be even higher than for MEW. On the basis of the developed methods construction of solutions for wave propagation in urban area and elastic wave diffraction (including seismic waves) are proposed. The book is useful for specialists who solve scientific and engineering problems in wave propagation and for students and postgraduate students.

Book excerpt: The objective of the contract was to carry out a theoretical investigation of the scattering of an incident plane electromagnetic wave by perfectly conducting bodies of somewhat irregular shape. The results were to be applicable in the so-called resonance region, where the major dimensions and of the order of a free-space wavelength in size. The objects which were investigated included a cone of finite height, a circular cylinder of finite length, a cube, a finned circular cylinder of infinite length, a finned sphere, and a hemisphere. Solutions and numerical results for the radar cross section were obtained for the finite cone, the finned cylinder, and the finned sphere. The solution for the hemisphere has been obtained and numerical results are in the process of being secured. Some attention also was given to the problem of altering the scattering characteristics of reflecting objects without altering their essential configurations. Results were obtained for scattering by a long wire. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to analyze the problem of electromagnetic wave scattering from a layer which is rough on both sides. A general vector theory is developed for horizontal and vertical polarizations in which use is made of the Fourier transform and the small perturbation theory. Although there has been a great deal of work performed in the area of electromagnetic wave scattering from plane-layered media, there has been very little work on the problem of wave scattering from a layer which has both interfaces rough. A solution to this problem is important if one is interested in such things as radar scattering from a layered road surface or from a terrain surface covered with ice. There are many other applications in which a solution to this problem would be of great aid.
