Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis is presented in this report which shows that when a plane electromagnetic wave is incident upon a perfectly conducting, linearly oscillating, arbitrarily shaped target, the scattered far field differs only in phase from the field scattered when the target is motionless. The explicit form of the phase modulation factor is derived to an accuracy of the order of v/c, where v and c are the velocities of target motion and electromagnetic waves respectively. Spectral analysis of the modulation shows that the power distribution varies with the shape of the motion, wavelength of the incident field, and magnitude of the projections of the oscillation in the incident and receiver directions. Power spectra are calculated for square, triangular, and sinusoidal periodic target motion as well as a superposition of two sinusoids of different frequency and amplitude. The results indicate that even small amplitude oscillations produce measurable modulations of the scatter field. (Author).

Book Synopsis The Electromagnetic Scattering of Broad Bandwidth Random Signals by a Discrete Target by : John K. Schindler
Download or read book The Electromagnetic Scattering of Broad Bandwidth Random Signals by a Discrete Target written by John K. Schindler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent papers have emphasized the linear systems aspect of the electromagnetic scattering from a stationary, discrete target. They show that the temporal response of the far-zone scattered field is the convolution of the temporal impulse response of the scatterer with the waveform of the illuminating plane wave. In this paper the scattering system response to an illuminating waveform which is a broadband, temporally stationary random process is discussed. As expected from the classical theory of the noise response of linear systems, the crosscorrelation properties of arbitrary components of the scattered field at two space-time points can be determined from the temporal autocorrelation function of the illuminating waveform and the appropriate target impulse responses. A consideration of the power spectral density of the bistatic scattered field at a large range r from the target leads to an alternate interpretation of the target scattering cross section. It may be thought of as 4 pi r square times the power spectral density of the bistatic scattered field when the target illumination is white noise. By analogy with the classical definition of the bistatic scattering cross section for monochromatic excitation, one can define the effective scattering cross section of a target for broadband illumination. The effective cross section is proportional to the integral over all frequencies of the classical cross section weighted by the power spectral density of the illumination. The effective bistatic cross sections of various targets in the Rayleigh and optics regions are exhibited and compared with the classical bistatic cross sections. (Author).

Book Synopsis Electromagnetic Scattering Concepts Applied to the Detection of Targets Near the Ground by : David Allen Hill
Download or read book Electromagnetic Scattering Concepts Applied to the Detection of Targets Near the Ground written by David Allen Hill and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems related to the detection of targets in the presence of clutter and ground are investigated. The two basic problems are the change in the target response due to the presence of the ground and the recognition of the target response when contaminated with clutter return. The transient fields of short dipoles in the presence of a dielectric half-space are examined and exact closed-form solutions are obtained for some particular source and observation points. The solution for the case of the source and observation points coincident is used to determine the interaction between a dipole source and the interface and the resultant dipole impedance change. The same solutions are used to compute the change in the dipole modes of scatterers due to the presence of a half-space, particularly the shift in the s-plane poles of the target. Results are presented for both dielectric and perfectly conducting half-spaces. (Author).
