Book excerpt: This monograph is concerned with the direct-scattering of electromagnetic waves by one- and two-dimensional objects, and the use of this technique in one-dimensional inverse profiling. It discusses results of research into the method of this technique and its application to specific problems. Several techniques are presented for solving transient electromagnetic direct-scattering problems. These problems are solved indirectly, via a Fourier or Laplace transformation to the real- or complex-frequency domain, as well as directly in the time domain. For the one-dimensional case it is described how the special features of the respective techniques are also exploited to tackle the inverse problem of determining obstacle properties from the scattered field excited by a known incident field. The problems of both identification and of inverse profiling are addressed. For a range of specific problems representative numerical results are presented and discussed. Particular attention is devoted to the numerical implementation and to the physical interpretation of the theoretical numerical results obtained. With respect to inverse-scattering the emphasis is on the band-limiting effects that may arise due to approximation errors in the various inversion schemes employed.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the use of polarization effects for radar and electromagnetic imaging problems (References 1, 2, and 3). The problem of electro magnetic imaging can be divided into the following areas: (1) Propagation of the Stokes' vector from the transmitter to the target region through various atmospheric conditions (rain, dust, fog, clouds, turbulence, etc.). (2) Scattering of the Stokes' vector from the object. (3) Scattering of the Stokes' vector from the rough surface, terrain, and the volume scattering. (4) Propagation of the Stokes' vector from the target region to the receiver. (5) The characteristics of the receiver relating the Stokes' vector to the output. The propagation characteristics of the Stokes' vector through various media can be described by the equation of transfer. Even though the scalar equation of transfer has been studied extensively in the past, the vector equation of transfer has not received as much attention. In recent years, however, a need for further study of the vector radiative transfer theory has become increasingly evident and several important studies have been reported. This paper presents a general formulation of the vector theory of radiative transfer under general anisotropic scattering conditions. Some useful solutions are also presented 4 8 for several practical situations. - 2. GENERAL FORMULATION OF VECTOR RADIATIVE TRANSFER THEORY Let us consider the plane-parallel problem Shovlll in Figure 1.

Book excerpt: Microwave imaging techniques allow for the development of systems that are able to inspect, identify, and characterize in a noninvasive fashion under different scenarios, ranging from biomedical to subsurface diagnostics as well as from surveillance and security applications to nondestructive evaluation. Such great opportunities, though, are actually severely limited by difficulties arising from the solution of the underlying inverse scattering problem. As a result, ongoing research efforts in this area are devoted to developing inversion strategies and experimental apparatus so that they are as reliable and accurate as possible with respect to reconstruction capabilities and resolution performance, respectively. The intent of this Special Issue is to present the experiences of leading scientists in the electromagnetic inverse scattering community, as well as to serve as an assessment tool for people who are new to the area of microwave imaging and electromagnetic inverse scattering problems.

Book excerpt: A triennial summation of the state of the art in radio science This book is the fourth in the modern series of triennial reviews prepared by the International Union of Radio Science to further communication and understanding of the status and future of radio science, both for those working in the field, and for those who want to know what is of current importance in this area. The International Union of Radio Science, URSI (Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale), has divided the subject of "Radio Science" according to the ten topics of the Scientific Commissions that make up URSI. This volume consists of thirty-eight original, peer-reviewed papers. Each paper provides a critical, in-depth review of–and, in many cases, tutorial on–advances and research that have been of significant importance within the area of interest of the Commissions during the past three to four years. Among the topics covered are: Electromagnetic metrology Fields and waves Signals and systems Electronics and photonics Electromagnetic noise and interference Wave propagation and remote sensing Ionospheric radio and propagation Waves in plasmas Radio astronomy Electromagnetics in biology and medicine With an included CD-ROM of the full book text, allowing the user to do full-text searching of all the papers, the Review of Radio Science: 1999—2002 is a resource of vital importance to anyone working in, or with an interest in, radio science.

Book excerpt: Time domain electrometry (TDE) is a general term which includes time domain reflectrometry and time domain transmissiometry. It is a commercially-viable technique for leak detection, contaminant monitoring, and moisture content determination in contaminant transport modelling. Under demographic pressure, contaminated sites are increasingly being re-developed for domestic and industrial use; and this presents an urgent need for reliable, non-intrusive and integrated methods of subsurface characterization, detection and monitoring of organic and inorganic pollutants, soil moisture content and salinity. This book provides an overview of the potential application of TDE in geoenvironmental engineering and describes the geophysical methods used.

Book excerpt: The pulsed EM characterization of planar circuits is of high practical importance in many areas of science and engineering such as electromagnetic compatibility and antenna design. This book is hence devoted to the mathematical formulation and numerical analysis of arbitrarily-shaped parallel-plane structures concerning their pulsed EM propagation, radiation and scattering behavior. The key emphasis is on the time-domain reciprocity-based integral-equation formulations and their efficient numerical solution.
